Dear Ady,

I know it was a lots of talk about the famous Bespin SE scene, where the FX crew forgot to add the lift to the background. I respect your work so much and i am so excited about the final product...could you hint us any concept picture about that one scene?

Not the final render, not even a movie file, but a single picture? How about that scene? Because that error always bother me...and not just me but the whole community.

That was a significant error int the 97 SE, and not the only one.

Neither do I, but I will one day. But I can play the .ts streams via USB on my television for now :)

I remember (when reading through this 600+ pages thread), that there was a discussion about if Ady was gonna have both a PAL and NTSC version of ESB:R and if there was gonna be a purist edition like he did for ANH:R. And he said that (at the time) he was simply going to release a 720p AVCHD version of ESB:R.

That's why I thought there wasn't going to be a DVD version.

So am I correct that these extra languages will only be in the DVD version and that the 720p AVCHD will only have the English DD5.1 track?

Honestly I can't remember either way.  I just liked the sound of "Mr. Big Fancy TV Man."

Well, there's only one person on these boards who can answer this.

No, there is another... oh wait, no there isn't :)

No, i said there would be no purist version of ESB:R. I stated that there would be a AVCHD 720p DL-DVD, a NTSC & PAL DVD-9 & 5 and there will be a bonus disc on DVD-5 with all the extras. The DVD-9's will have the extra audio tracks if i can get hold of them and the AVCHD will have the option (& the tools to do it)  to swap the default English 5.1 audio track with one of the optional foreign language tracks that will be available separately. But the AVCHD will only have the 5.1 English track and maybe an isolated score

Yes please on the isolated score.  Then I can ditch my OCP ESB Classic Edition. :-)

Woww, adywan, that would be great!I've done a 2.0 dub for revisited, and later I redo it 5.1. But sadly I couldn't keep the menus. I digged up tutorials from originaltrilogy and it was good to be see the revisited version in my language.

Here is sample from the dub, and you can see, more than 2000 people was seen it, so if you put some manual, how to do it without loosing the menus and the extras, I would be happy.

here are the tools and instructions i posted on how to replace the main audio track for my TPM theatrical edit. It's basically the same method to replace the audio for any DVD and you can keep all the menus and extras

About this dubbing debate:

Even though I now watch every movie in English, that has not always been the case, like most French talking peoples I grew up with a French dubbed star wars. I agree, it's clumsy and poorly made (especially ANH) but it's still better than looking a movie with subtiltes, you can't feel the emotion of the characters and you miss a portion of the pictures, especially when you're a kid.

I have a lot of friends who can't watch a movie in English, and I always been very frustrated I can't show them ANH(R), as it has no French dubbing or subtitles.
BTW is there a version of ANH(R) with French subs out there? In progress? And what about a French dubbed ANH(R)? I'm actually considering making a fan edit of the French dubb for Ady's ANH(R), fixing all the bad translations they did back then (3po > 6po ?, millennium Falcon > millennium Condor?!, Chewbacca > Chictabac ?!?!? or Chewie > Chico ?!?!?) but I'm not sure I'll have the time to do something like that…

Anyway, I'm verry happy to hear that you intend to add French dubbing Ady.

If Chewie is Chico who are the other Marx Brothers and do they ever meet up with Gringo?

Lol :)

fortunately, Greedo remains Greedo in the French dubb…

But Gringo is still better than "Chictabac", in French it means "elegant tobacco" ?!?!?!?

Dubs work better for animation than for live action, in my experience.

I thought "Chictabac" originated from "chew tobacco" ?

What about the annoying fact that the dubbed track never matches the character's lip movements? If that doesn't break immersion than I don't know what does.

O_o

I´ve been watching dubbed stuff for more than 35 years and lip-synching was never an issue... I can´t even remember someone even bringing that up before... :)

That said, dubbing is a nice addition, as many mentioned before; it just must be well done... Unfortunatelly, in my country, ANH and ANH:SE had the most atrocious dubbing I´ve ever seen in a movie. Aside the voice actors chosen don´t making justice to the original actors in general, two situations have horrified me the most: Han Solo, with the replaced voice and quite poor translation of the lines, looks awfully gay, specially when talking to Luke; the other moment, Obi-Wan´s memorable line "Who's the more foolish: The fool, or the fool who follows him?" was simply wiped... instead he repeats some previous line "You must do what you feel is right, of course. She needs your help." All I could thing when I first heard that years ago was W.T.F... ESB and RotJ were a little better but I prefer to watch the movies in English at any time...

Okay Ady, I gonna do the dick move here.

I am gonna be bit demanding.

Its April 2010 and I am going insane waiting for this.

Probably just out and out piss my pants in shock for just the trailer of Return of the Jedi Revisited trailer.

But I gonna ask what we are all thinking.

If you could put a percentage on how much is done I think we deserve it.

If it is less the 50% I will probably go on tower with a rifle or just do what the Plinkett Reviews guy does with the hookers in the crawl space.

While I wouldn't say we "deserve it", but certainly would be awesome to get a percentage.

Pretty much all the bad name translations in french are only in ANH. Chico/Chicktabba is Chewie/Chewbacca in ESB and ROTJ - Condor is Falcon etc... exept Han/Yan and C-3PO who is still Z-6PO, BUT those two sounds so much better in french than I'd stay with it.

3po in french is prounounced: "trwha Pay ow" -

6PO:  "Sis Pay Ow" is actualy sounding closer than his real name in english and much easier to dub for the french voice actors. And it will always be his "real name " for me!

They (AGAIN!) changed the rules when came the PT, 6PO becoming 3PO in french... while I'd still prefer to have him called 6PO.

A real mess anyway.

EDIT: and I of course forgot the infamous Dark Vador, which sounds good in french after all. Because a lot of french have difficulties saying "th".

The funniest French dub for me was Han yelling in the torture device. Why did they need to dub that?! :p "Oh, that sounds too much like Harrison. We need to change that." Haha.

Other than that, I've always thought they did a good job with the voice actors, especially for Dark Vador.

Okay, I promised some BESPIN 'flipped' shot shenanigans a while back, so here they are  (I've included a few extra shots from the sequence they appear in to place them in context) -

When we cut-away from the Luke/Vader 'duel' to this 'escape' sequence, Chewbacca's 'bandolier' is correctly slung over his left shoulder and the 'sack' is by his right side....and only C3PO's right arm is attached....

1.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

2.

....but after 'close-ups' of Chewie, R2, and Lando, when we then cut to this shot below....it turns out that it has been 'flipped'.  It's a reversal of the same set and background that is seen later on in the movie, as shown below in shot 21.  However, in addition to this, it looks like the actors have been reversed too....as the security guard's 'gun holster' is on his wrong side (compared to all the other guards in the movie), and the nearest woman's 'buttons' are on the wrong side too.  Women's garments are usually designed to button-up on the opposite side to men's ones, and I'm assuming the actress was given a 'female' top to begin with....

3.

....and then everything is the correct way round leading up to this shot below....

4.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round (as Leia is still holding her gun the same way during it)....

5.

....but when we immediately cut to this shot below....it turns out that this has been 'flipped' too.  Chewie's bandolier/sack and C3PO's attached arm are suddenly on the wrong sides now (and R2's details and the Stormtrooper's costume are reversed too)....

6.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

7.

....and after a close-up of R2, when we then cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

8.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

9.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, everything has reverted back the correct way round again with Chewbacca etc....

10.

....and after a couple of 'close-ups' of R2, when we then cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

11.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

12.

....and after a 'close-up' of R2, when we then cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

13.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

14.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

15.

20.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

21.

....but when we immediately cut to this shot below....it turns out to be another one that's been 'flipped'.  The costume detail on the Stormtrooper's 'knees' and black 'side holsters' are on the wrong sides now....

22.

(Here's an example of how things should correctly look with the Stormtrooper costumes - http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/8167/screenshot295.png )

23.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

24.

25.

I've no idea if adywan will end up re-'flipping' any of those reversed BESPIN shots or not, but I'm all for seeing continuity restored where possible, and to be honest, I'd have quite liked this SE addition to have been re-'flipped'....

(bigger version here - http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4251/18478133857218215611666.jpg )

....as it would mean the actor/actresses and their costumes are the correct way round.  The background could EITHER be done exactly the same as adywan's new 'skyline' version seen below, so that it looks like Lando and Leia eventually end up at the same spot a bit later....

(bigger version here - http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/2417/18478133857338218611666.jpg )

....OR....it could still have a different 'skyline', so that it still gives the impression that it's a totally different location we're seeing when Lando warns the city.

However, as it seems that it's being kept as it is....I can happily accept that Bespin women's clothes are differently 'buttoned-up' in their galaxy compared to ours, and that this security guard is left-handed....

Good to see a darker blue which matches the original security guard costumes, and neat work on the new sky too.  :)

As far as the Chewbacca shot is concerned....

(bigger versions here - http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/7844/screenshot310.png and here - http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1747/screenshot313g.png )

....I reckon it could certainly be re-'flipped' without contradicting the shot that comes afterwards (where R2 ends up at the doorway), as the layout of the interior set is a little unclear and haphazard (due to being re-used) during the sequence anyway.

And the same goes for the Stormtroopers shot....

(bigger versions here - http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/2029/screenshot299.png and here - http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/7956/screenshot300.png )

....as although it occurs immediately before we see Leia suddenly exit the corridor in the shot that comes after it, and gives the impression that particular Stormtrooper is firing at her....I don't necessarily think that's right....

....because it's not too obvious whether certain Stormtroopers are engaged with either Leia or Chewbacca, due to the way the action is inter-cut throughout the sequence.

Chewbacca seems to be fending off Stormies to the right-hand side of the 'partition wall' he's behind, and to the front of him too....

....whereas Leia and Lando have ended up dealing with Stormies somewhere around the corridor that's behind Chewie it seems...

....and going by the set details in the 'flipped' Stormtrooper shot....those 2 Stormies could just as easy be imagined to be firing from somewhere in the area in front of where Chewbacca was positioned until the doorway opened....

Either way, if it's re-'flipped', it can still also seem to be as if they are shooting towards Leia (and positioned near her corridor somewhere)....but just from a different 'camera-angle' now.....

Something that would be good to get improved a little, would be the edge of the 'wall partition' that Chewie is beside.  If you compare the shots above, you'll see that the width and colour of the outer edge seems to be inconsistent between them.  The shots are all static, so perhaps it's possible for them to be made to match up a bit better?

Author
Time
 (Edited)

And here's another BESPIN sequence where something has been 'flipped' too.... -

Luke's right hand has been cut off during the duel....and when we eventually cut to this shot below, things are the correct way round....

1.

....and when we immediately cut to this shot below, things are still the correct way round....

2.

....but when we then cut to this shot below of Luke continuing to fall in a 'twisting' manner....it turns out that it's been 'flipped'.  We can wrongly see Luke's right hand again, with his left sleeve 'hand-less' now....

3.

(Here's a bigger version - http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/8679/screenshot262a.png )

....and then when we immediately cut to this shot below....it turns out to have been 'flipped' too.  We wrongly see Luke's right hand again (almost in front of his face in this example), while his left sleeve is 'hand-less' once more....

4.

(Here's a bigger version - http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/1313/screenshot30s.png )

....but when we then cut to this shot below, things go back to being the correct way round again from here onwards....

5.

Again, although these 2 'flipped' shots pass pretty quickly, I'd personally still rather see them re-'flipped' for continuity's sake, as it will just seem that we are seeing the shaft from a different 'camera-angle' to what we've been used to....without contradicting anything.

Thoughts?
