I've been working on a cover for TESB:R  (I'm also gonna make a new ANH:R cover as well) - here's the TESB one so far:

It's obviously based on the official style DVD covers and also a couple of fanmade one's out there. What do you guys think of it - any suggestions on how to improve it?

EDIT: I tried making it small, but it won't let me post it small for some reason - so sorry if it's taking up space.

very good now for comments: luke and vaders sabers look weird, yodas face is kinda strange near the bottom, the "revisited" should be shifted over to the left a little bit so the "the empire strikes back" is in between the end of the "R" and the end of the "D" and it looks a bit blurred, vader look kinda looks stretched and the end of Luke's saber is pointy/blocky.

yea, the light sabers also look weird to me also. is luke's saber purple?

Thanks for the feedback. I need to work on the Luke and Vader duel image at the bottom of the cover and make the sabers the right colours and thickness (blue/red and thinner). I've decided to put the 'Revisited' where the 'Widescreen' thing is btw, so I'll change that and keep the title like it is on the official DVDs. Now that you've pointed it out, Vader does look a little stretched - so I'll change that. And I'll smooth out Luke's saber at the end.

Without speaking to the specifics of the cover (I'm horrible at judging that kind of stuff), I have to ask: Do we really want to be reminded of the Official DVDs?

I think that the covers themselves are awesome and I'm sure a lot of people will agree with me. Ok, the official DVDs themselves weren't 100% brilliant with colour correction and various other things, but the artwork of the DVD covers deserves something as brilliant as Ady's stuff - besides it's something for people who actually liked the official DVD covers, so it adds to the choice of covers in the end - though I'm actually looking forward to what Ady does with his own official cover, since the one he did for A New Hope was amazing :)

It'll be fixed :) Yeah the one at the bottom looks purpleish, lol - it will be blue and thinner when it's all complete.

Sorry to be so negative but its constructive critism not anything else. Vader looks squashed, Yoda looks too chalky, as if he were a chalk drawing. Luke's head looks like its been stuck on at a weird angle, his arm is also at a weird angle. Lightsaber blade too thick and short. As been mention the 'revisited' section needs to be moved to the left. Apart from that though i do love the positioning of it all though. I feel like making my own now, gonna go for an individul look though. ;)

That is obviously a fan in bad fan-made costume. There are so many things wrong with it: The inaccurate collar, the button on the cuff, the Biker Scout glove, the tool pocket on the wrong arm is square, the chest box is black and blocky, lack of flap beind the shoulder on the flight suit .. and he is wielding a ANH version of the lightsaber, plus the sleeve looks kinda weird. I think that the fan is quite a bit heftier than Luke was...

Plus... Luke never wore that particular costume in ESB. He wore the Snowspeeder pilot costume, with the orange jacket on top of the flight suit. He is seen zipping up the flight suit, but before putting the jacket on, though.

The flak vest is the only part of that costume that looks good.. but Luke's actual flak vest in ESB was a little bit different.

Edit: The end of the light saber should look like that from that particular angle, but .. The real lightsaber is exactly 1.5" in diameter and the hand is out of proportion. The lightsaber should be about 30% larger to match the hand. That is also a weird grip: The optimal grip would be with the control box on the opposite side of the palm.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, and I don't mind any criticism btw since it is a work-in-progress after all. I'm gonna have a new Luke pose, make Vader the correct size, try to fit Han and Leia in somewhere and find a good Yoda to edit in. The revisited will replace the 'widescreen' bar at the top of the cover and I'll fix the saber too (or sabers, since I need to correct the bottom pic too). I'm also gonna change the purple 'steam' into red  :)

I'm gonna also make my own unique TESB:R DVD cover btw and that's gonna be a surprise for next year :D

Cloud City in the shaft is a strange image.  For a minute I thought I was looking at a Star Trek scene lol.

Perhaps we need a new thread for Revisited artwork?

You got the credits wrong, FML — ESB was neither written nor directed by Lucas, he only gets a story and executive producer's credit. It was written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan and directed by Irvin Kershner.

the beginning stages of a cover i am working on

 very catchy.

don't mind my criticism but, the pic on the back of the case is too bright lookin and on the front with the star destroyer shown in the clouds, it looks off. and i agree with dr. frink on cloud city being in the shaft.

otherwise, i like it.

ha ha, good spot there. couldn't resist putting in something new to see if anyone would notice it.:)

How the hell do you work so fast, Adywan? You seem to most of the non-model stuff done already, looking at that screenshot.

It's called a lot of sleepless nights and having it seem like i'm surgically attached to my PC. lol

Ganamae said:

Oh and by the way, where can one buy these master replicas like the Falcon Ady bought?! Anyone?

thanks !

I got mine from ebay as most of the shops that had it listed were sold out. I guess getting one now is going to be very difficult as they are now out of production.

While that 'cameo' idea sounds fun, it's a little scary that we might end up seeing 'replacement' faces that may be more at home in the Cantina Bar for all we know!

Although the project itself should be incentive enough for anyone, that early 'behind the scenes footage' suggestion sounds a winner to me, although I like the idea of an 'unreleased' clip being a possible option sometime too.

Yeh, the cameo may be a bit too ambitious but i will only be adding the cameos in places where it won't jump out at anyone watching that is a new face or character.  If i can't do it convincingly enough then at least there will be the BTS clip which will feature a new finished clip at the end.

Ady, thanks for the update and sneak peek at the Vader shot (and thanks too to Angel for pointing it out).

A couple questions for you though:

First, could you refresh my memory... why are you doing a new Echo Base and Falcon model?  I forget what problems these were supposed to help you fix (i.e., specific shots?  Continuity issues?)

Secondly, what are the donations helping you with exactly?  I'm assuming they're going towards materials for the various physical elements you're currently constructing?

Lastly, the idea of pasting our faces into ESB:R is interesting, but I wonder if I'd even like to see my own face in it (on the one hand it would be kinda cool, but on the other it might take me out of the movie... and yet I'd be IN the movie... how ironic).  At any rate, regardless of the whole cameo thing, I wasn't aware that funds were still so desperately needed, and I'd like to contribute again.  Before I do, though, is there any "minimum" donation that makes it worthwhile?  I ask only because once the funds get changed from Canadian to British currency, I'm not sure how "usable" a donation becomes.

And please, don't ever let a lack of funds, some people's desire for a definitive release date, or simply exhaustion discourage you from finishing this edit.  I'd rather ESB:R take 20 years to complete than to have you abandon it altogether :)

Now go get some sleep man! :)

All the donations go towards materials. and . as Tesco's say here in the UK, every little helps. Things i still need to get are the camera dolly and track along with a boom & tripod. Now these aren't cheap. I don't need any of the large types just something that is big enough to do what i need but not too big that space becomes an issue. Looking around on ebay there are ones that are just silly prices and beyond what i would really need. I was going to make my own rig but i doubt now that i will be able to make one good enough for what i need. But i'm still looking at at at least £350 for the crane, dolly & track.  Plus i need to get a couple of studio green screens. Why 2? well the studio ones are only a certain width so i would have to stitch 2 together to get a screen wide enough to use.  I've just got myself a wide angle lens for the camcorder which is invaluable to be able to film shots like the asteroid canyon. the rest is all to do with building materials. Styrene, and lots of it, but this isn't cheap for the amount i'll be using. Also car body filer, and again lots of it, as this is the best filler due to its fine nature and easiness to sand for use with the modelling, then things like some extra lighting parts for the models etc.  It's going to be about £100 for the amount of body filer alone. My daughters boyfriend works for a body repair centre and may be able to get me a bulk lot at trade prices if his boss will let him, but i don't want to rely on the that just in case.  The good thing though is that most of the larger items like the dolly and rig will be reused when i get to ROTJ:R

Yes, i know its spiralled out of control a bit but all this extra work will be worth it. t is also very good practice for when i tackle ROTJ:R because there is so much more work to be done on that like replacing the Jabba's palace mattes with a real model, the rebel headquarters hangar amongst many others :)

Remember when we called the A New Hope edit "ambitious"? Is there a word that is beyond ambitious, because that's where it's headed!

It's just too bad that more people aren't stepping up saying 'hey Adywan, you can borrow my dolly' or whatever. Perhaps they just don't know. I have a feeling that if people did, you'd have lots of offers.

Do the green screens need to be real studio green screens? Wouldn't painted cardboard work? :p

Actually, Ripplin, people have offered. Adywan seems to want to do this on his own for the most part, which is of course his prerogative. I know my friend Gabe offered some of his gear earlier this year, but Ady wasn't interested.

It's gotta be a special paint to make a real greenscreen, and it's not cheap...

I ordered a (small) greenscreen made out of cloth from Pinnacle website 2 years ago (30€), but it's not very wide...

What gear? The only time i recall Mr Ghostface (gabe) contacting me was the email you asked him to send to talk about your matte work.

Really? Damn, I remember he definitely offered you the use of his studio camera (don't ask me what it is, I'm a technotard when it comes to cameras). He surely would have offered his Steadicam, too, he usually does. I don't know what he offered you, but I remember that he did. Ah well. Maybe it was lost in your overflowing inbox! :-) It was months back. He might have put it in an email from me as we sometimes do, I really don't know.

My mate Andy certainly has some of the other stuff you listed, and he's a pretty easy-going guy when it comes to lending it, etc. He's got a little crane which has come in very handy over the years.
