It's just hard to stay on-topic during such a lull. And if no one says anything, a certain member will start saying "dead thread." ;)

I was thinking about General Veers* and why he seems to be more popular than other officers. I think it's partly because he seems a bit detached from the rest. He isn't around when they're glaring at each other and getting choked and such. He is played as a more confident character (but not foolishly brazen like Motti), and I believe he even got his own story in one of the Tales books, right?

I did post something on topic but it didn't garner enough interest.

There isn't anything wrong with a thread going into suspended animation (so long as it survives the freezing process) until a relavent topic pops up or a new announcement is made.

Ady has a lot to do and a life to lead and there are plenty of other threads and projects to keep us interested in.

Just coz Ady aint on doesnt mean we cant keep on topic, we can discuss other things. Isnt there a list of things that need improving and cant we discuss those?

I think most people liked the CG Yoda in AOTC and ROTS.  I thought is was well done. Just my 2 cents.

I was thinking of a few landing ships coming down as the panic starts and a few fighters clearing the area and taking out the local security, impressive as that view is it might be jewelling the guilded lilly to do something on that scale but I'm frequently wrong.

This is a thread about The Empire Strikes Back, not Back to the Future II. ;)

As Sev, yes, the CG Yoda is far, far better than the TPM puppet. I think the best thing they did with the CG is add the ear shakes. But still, the problem I see in the CG is that it's still too smooth somehow. The natural jerkiness of movement is still hit-and-miss.

Well lets see what it would look like from all perspectives.

My first mockup in a week

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

a few tie fighters alone would look pretty good imo, cutting through the fog as people begin to scramble...

Bingowings, I think that's actually an interesting idea you had about having Imperial ships attacking cloud city during the evacuation. I don't know how everybody else would feel, but it certainly would make sense to me that if Lando betrayed the deal with Vader, that would surely be one of the consequences. Showing even just a quick shot or two of some ships firing on the cloud cars would be enough to show us what Vader was holding over Lando. I also agree that showing that would help paint Lando in a better light, as he would not look so much like a coward, and instead look more like a man with a responsibility over his city.

I dunno. In film it would be great even epic. But I really can't think of an ending that had the tension that ESB had. The last 15 minutes of that movie were so quiet yet so powerful. If leia pointed out a star destroyer like OMFG STAR DESTROYER instead of Ric Olie then we wouldn't need the attack. Is Ady going to work his audio magic and maybe raise the volume and pitch of Leias simple observation. Ever since people on here started talking about it I have been bothered by it. Now after thinking about it. A star destroyer in the middle of cloud city could be amazing but it would come off a little PT-ish. It would definetly need to be flawless. Just doing what I did was too cartoony. But I dunno if ady will want to do something that doesn't help nor hinder the story. But it is a revisitation. One problem with that is it was hard to do on a single frame it will be immensly hard in motion. Then after you get the star destroyer in there you need shadows over the city (which would be awesome if done right) then you need to make the star destroyer cut through the clouds. The biggest problem with that is the lighting. I don't think our artificial lighting is up to the standards of something like this.

A bit rough and ready but here was my quick stab at illustrating the idea a bit smaller in scale:

Lando's Price

You don't need to have a Star Destroyer descending on the city...that's killing a fly with a sledgehammer.

Have some TIEs and that Imperial Landing Craft that they added to the Sandtrooper scenes in ANH coming in and start shooting buildings and such, maybe have some just pass by a window, lasers firing, but we don't need to see what they're shooting.  Just create the sense that "the Empire has taken control of the city", as Lando just announced.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Author
Time

The way I saw it was that Lando's announcement caused panic and people either ran to the nearest ship or went out on the streets, the fighters were to stop the locals from protecting the escaping ships and to encourage people to stay indoors.

A few shots could be a powerful incentive.

I liked the way they evacuated the Hotel of Floston Paradise in Fifth Element. We could show hundreds of escape shuttles being attacked by ties.

Definately but only if it didn't detract from the pace of the escape.

A few shots here and there I think would be enough to get the idea across.

Ady, are you going to fix the colors of the buttons that luke have on his chest plate during the copcit shots in snowspeeder?

They seem to change colors and brightness all the time.

-Angel

yeh. the problem is caused by the colour of the right side button. It is blue and , when they shoot against a blue screen, the blue is lost and its changes to grey, green and even white. Its going to be a lot of work to mask out the button for each shoot to restore the blue, but its something that does need doing

Adywan, Sorry to ask this way too early, But what do you plan to do with the rest of the saga Mainly the prequels to make Darth Vaders line in ESB about being Luke's father more of a suprise? I hate the fact that George Lucas completely forgot about the OT when making the PT. Why did he have to spoon feed us?

I really won't know until i have the OT finished. Once ROTJ:R is finished i will have a better idea of how to fit the PT in with the OT depending on the direction ROTJ takes.

Anyway, here's a 'quick' little video I just made that has that clip in it, as-well-as a couple of other crazy, wacky, and odd ideas. Set your faces to 'stunned'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQm9rlbJSyI

Pretty funny. Loved the stardestroyer hiding behind the clouds and the "327" stamped on the landing pad.

I can't believe that it sparked a debate about adding the empire attacking bespin though. I'm pretty suure this was covered a while ago. It really doesn't need to happen in the scale of having a stardestroyer over the city though. while it would be visually stunning its something to cut the pace of the movie up like the added vader scene did. . We do see that TIEs appear when the falcon is escaping and lando does mention the fighters when Leia want to go back for Luke, and having  some background TIEs shooting down ships may well take the focus of the main action.

This has already been noted (forgive me!), but it would be nice if Adywan checked the Marvel cartoon of ESB from 1980 by Archie Goodwin (Marvel Super Special 16 or Star Wars #39 to #44 (6 issues)) to get the special feeling of the movie, how it could be..(could be even more inspiring in the work of the revisited ESB). This cartoon has for an example a scene with a rebel on a tauntaun which is running in front of the AT-ATs before the fight begins. This may be impossible to add, but just check the cartoon, because it contains things from the script that never made it to the screen (for example the stick that Luke has sliced in smaller parts on Dagobah as a part of the Jedi training). Another things are that the probe droid on Hoth is destroying a smaller outpost before Han and Chewie encounter it.

One question: In this 1980 cartoon (which is based on the original script), Luke screams "NEVER!!!" when he falls from Darth Vader when he tries to get him over to the dark side. Was the SE- scream from 1997 closer to the original script than we thought?

yeh, i have the marvel adaptation somewhere. The rebel running away from the AT-AT's was actually taken from a Ralph McQuarrie painting from a section of the original script where Luke is on the Taun taun.

oh_riginal said:

But, to go back on topic, one thing that still bothers me about ESB to this day is the shot of Luke while he is doing a handstand on Dagobah. In the wide shots, Luke's arms are straightened all the way, and the pose looks convincing, but when it cuts to a close-up of Luke, his elbows are bent, and he looks like an actor being held upside down, reaching his arms to the ground, rather than holding himself up. Though I don't think this is fixable....

Not a lot i can do about that, i'm afraid.

Still no news! I'd prefer a bad excuse to....... NO NEWS! ;)

You are really starting to piss me off now Sevb32. You bloody moan and moan that this edit is taking ages to do, then moan some more when i announce that i will be building more models for filming which delays the movie even more, then bloody moan when i haven't posted anything in about a day.  Make up your damn mind. do you want me to work on the edit to get it done quicker or have to come in here every day to give you news thus wasting a lot of my time when there would be nothing to say? And now you accuse me of giving bad excuses when i do post.   The "dead thread" posts have gone beyond a joke now and that last remark has pushed me beyond my patience. Consider this a polite warning.

Now, because the fund dried up a while ago i was thinking of releasing a new clip but it wouldn't be exclusive just for donaters. Yes, donaters would get to see it a little earlier than everyone else, but it would be released publicly a couple of weeks later. This way everyone gets to see it no matter what.

So sevb32, was it all just hot air from you then? lol

Ok, i'm starting back on ESB:R this weekend now i've finished my theatrical TPM.  I needed that break from ESB:R. But, because i have just found out that my back Muscles are deteriorating to the point that walking has now become complete agony  after a few minutes (nothing to do with me sitting at the pc hours on end  by the way), i will be stuck in the house sitting down, so where better than at my computer or at my work desk building the models  instead of just being stuck in front of the telly doing nothing. So i apologise if i come off as a bit aggressive lately. 24/7 pain is not a nice thing to live with

Sorry to hear about the back Ady, the better half was in similar agony when we moved the shed last weekend. Like dental pain, back pain is one of those nasty forms of discomfort that are almost impossible to get relief from.

Not as bad as gall or kidney stones though.

I'll move the TIEs attacking Cloud City over to the wishlist thread as you are clearly not going with it but someone might be able to use it.

Keep on the great work Adywan! Waiting and sharing all our thoughts about your edit is totaly part of the fun ESB:R is giving us. I'm not very active on this thread these days but I follow it with pleasure. Hope your health will get better.

Agreed. (again) As far as I see it, the scenes are fine as they are. As bad as the Empire is, would they be taking potshots at innocent people when Vader has a mission to focus on?* Even the most hardened TIE pilot would think 'why am I murdering Ice Cream Man?' They are there for one reason: Luke. That's it. Land, get him, leave.

Sorry to hear about your back. I have been dealing with some sort of soreness here and there in my back nearly every day for the past several months, but nothing like you're going through, it seems. Hope it improves somehow, someday. :)
