Burning video dvds on Macs

Does anyone know how to burn a normal video dvd with iDVD or iMovie? my sister just got a new imac with a dvd burner & i finally sat down & figured out how to use bittorrent (the alt.binaries.starwars thing is still flying high over my head at this moment). Anyway, i just finished DLing OCP's Star Wars classic edition to backup my laserdiscs & am trying to figure out how to burn it. I initially tried just opening the blank DVD on the desktop & dragging the Video_TS folder into it. I burned it, but i think it came out as a data disc. My playstation 2 reads it fine, but my normal dvd player won't read it at all. & the dvd player on the computer doesn't recognize it unless i specifically open the video_TS folder on the disc. (if i pop in a normal dvd, the comuter automatically recognizes it as a video dvd and plays it). Anyway, i can't afford nero & i already have two programs that are supposed to be able to burn video discs (iDVD & iMovie). I just cant figure out how to get rid of all the preformatted menus & crap so i can just burn Star Wars to dvd so that it will play in any normal dvd player. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

iMovie doesn't burn anything. It is strictly a video editor. iDVD only burns projects you create from assets you provide and it authors and burns. It's basically to make home movie dvd's. You don't want to use either of these.

Try these options:

1) Repeat your method of dragging the "VIDEO_TS" folder to the blank dvd. This time, add an empty folder named "AUDIO_TS" in the blank dvd. This should probably work. It's OK to burn it as a "data disc". It will be a UDF (Universal Disk Format) disc, the same as movie dvd's. It should now be recognised as a movie dvd by all your equipment.

2) Buy Roxio ToastTitanium 7. It will allow you to make a movie dvd from your VIDEO_TS folder.

3) Use OS X's built-in DiskUtility (in Applications/Utilities) to create a dvd-r disk image and add the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and burning that image to dvd.

In DiskUtility, click the "New Image" icon in the toolbar. Select Size: 4.7GB (dvd-r/dvd-ram), Encryption: none, Format: read/write disk image. Save image named something like "ANHCLASSIC". This disk image will now show up in the Finder as a volume that you can drag files in to. In the Finder, simply drag your VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders in there. Once they're copied, go back to DiskUtility. In the left hand pane, highlight the name of the disk image "ANHCLASSIC.dmg" and click the "Burn" icon in the toolbar.

All of these methods should work for you. iMovie and iDVD are not the right tools to accomplish what you want. Good luck!

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

*sigh* well, the only option i haven't tried is buying toast titanium 7. I've used three discs & they all work great on my PS2, but not on regular DVD players. :/ Oh well, maybe i'll keep experimenting, but right now i'm out of ideas (and blank DVDs). Oh well. Thanks for the input though.

I MAKE DVDs ALL OF THE TIME ON MY MAC. TOAST TITANIUM IS THE WAY TO GO. AS A SIDE NOTE iLIFE 06 JUST CAME OUT. IT HAS SOME REALLY COOL UPDATES FOR NATIVE MAC PROGRAMS SUCH AS iDVD. YOU CAN NOW MAKE WIDESCREEN MOVIES WITH iDVD. GETTING BACK TO TOPIC JUST GET TOAST TITANIUM 7 WHICH WILL INCLUDE POPCORN. POPCORN WILL COMPRESS A DUAL LAYER DVD INTO A SINGLE LAYER DVD. IF YOU NEED HELP JUST SEND ME A PM.

If you do not need a disk compressed or anything you can use Disk Utility.

This only works with duplicating like OCP's stuff, or using after downloading from a torrent, etc. ISO folders will need a little help from "DVD_Imager" ...That one is a free download. It takes just a bit of playing around with.
