In the 1st shot, did I see Luke in the distance behind one of the walkers? (the right 1) Either way, that is amazing work Ady

don't forget you are just seeing a single frame and working with moving footage is a lot different than being able to work on a still image. there are so many factors that have to go into the video work. i also have to try and keep each individual shot in a sequence match. so changing contrast, backgrounds and colours in one shot may not work for the other shots. its all about balance.

Spoken like a true Master Ady, it's true, sometimes a single frame may not look that good, but in the moving sequence of videos it all falls  in place, seen in a few movies (other than star wars), certain frames look horrible in fram-by-frame but in the 24fps rate you see a nice video....

Hey we found a new way to get more footage.  We just have to nitpick something to death and force ady to show us why he's right! (j/k)

You said it, not me. Lol.

well you totally contradicted yourself about the sky here Monroville. As i've said i'm not changing anything about the new shot. it works perfectly well for me. The brightness matches the other shots in the sequence whereas before , as i have said already, the original shot looked stormy. I guess there is only one way to settle this as you need to see it in motion and in context with the rest of the sequence. I'm wondering just how many are still comparing the colouring with the 2004 shots instead of my colour corrected version?

IN MOTION

please don't post this clip on youtube because it isn't finished. ignore the first shot because that's just the colour corrected version and i haven't begun work on this yet

Impressive...most impressive.

For those wondering, here is what Ady has to contend with when it comes to The Last Three Walkers:

Also notice the wildly varied backgrounds.

Makes sense that more than one would be brought down by tripping them, and they probably would fall in similar ways.

You nailed it right in the head with that one, the Hoth battle has as many incosistencies and continuity failures as ANH's last battle....thanks LFL

Marvellous stuff Adywan!  I mentioned recently that I hoped we'd get to see an amended shot from the AT-AT battle soon, but I wasn't expecting a whole new 'grouped' composition like this....and especially wasn't expecting an actual preview clip!  Despite why it ended up being shown, I'll take it!!

Between the new background mountains and the more consistent spacing between the AT-ATs, this is a huge improvement overall to the ongoing battle at this point, compared to the look of the original 'Luke rappelling upwards' shot.  (and the colour correction is excellent as always too)

Roll on next Thursday's pic.

Adywan, I hope you DO find a way to show  a further glimpse of the AT-ST, following the bottom shot shown here.  (is using an element from 'JEDI' a possibility I wonder?)

However, if you don't, and it has to go, then it would be great to get an improved 'mountainous' backdrop behind Luke to make up for it's loss....

I sure hope the AT-ST in the top shot will still be retained though....

the main issue I have with that original falling walker shot is there's no life around it. There's no battlements or anything in that shot to blend in with the live action footage that preceded and followed.

As for the ESB AT-ST. Someone has actually recreated it:

There's links to some reference as well. Perhaps you could get into contact with this guy and see if he could help you build your own or something.

Thanks for posting that link.

I've always preferred the ESB AT-ST to the ROTJ ones (they seem more sinister, elegant in a menacing way) and now I can get a nice close up view.

If I had my own way I'd replace all the ROTJ walkers with ESB ones The long legs add a weirdness to them which harks back to their Wellsian origins.

The legs aren't that different, it's the head.  The ESB one has a very sloped forehead, following the design of the AT-AT head, where the ROTJ one is more square.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

The legs on the ESB one are also substantially taller.  They're the same basic shape, but the ROTJ legs are substantially shorter.

I believe it was because the original model partially melted after being left under bright, hot studio lights during ESB's shoot, so the parts that were melted were re-done from scratch for ROTJ.  It's possible that that's a load of dingo's kidneys, but it seems plausible enough to me.

Okay, this is getting very frustrating.

The first comment is on the EMPIRE:R image itself, as in the cloudier sky can be implemented per my prior message with the fog bank/storm that the AT-ATs are first seen with the binocs.

The second comment is - if you want to do the clear skies, you can make the skies in the original shot clearer and add an AT-AT on the left, otherwise making the shot unmodified (other than color correction).

Now:
after watching the clip, it does come off better in motion, but there is still something that seems a little off.  I don't know if it is the closeness of the AT-ATs, the lighting or something with how the ground doesn't seem to recede far enough for the mountains to be "mountains".   Maybe if the mountains were more grey or a faded blue due to atmospheric haze - something to distinguish them from the ground below the AT-ATs so it doesn't look like they're right behind them.

Now I also understand that this is your show.  I'm just voicing my concern being that one of the things that really put me off the Prequels was just how everything was filmed.  it seems that everything since the mid-90's has this uniform lighted look (from foreground to background), with the exception of horror movies, which go the complete opposite direction and now they all look like SEVEN.

I'm really curious about how this particular shot might be tweaked now...

Good point. I think it would be fun/funny if we saw the ion cannon shoot at a lower angle and hit an AT-AT in the side. Could work for that one that topples sideways. Sure, it's just glorified electricity, but against something 'small' like an AT-AT, I would imagine it could pack quite a punch.

The other day I caught an episode of the show 100 Places to See Before You Die and it was an episode about Alaska. At one point they flew a helicopter to the top of a giant glacier and while they were up there it was nothing but snow and mountains. The thing was though that the mountains looked like they were a short walking distance away but in fact were miles and miles away. The illusion was caused by the clear air and snow.

I think we'll nitpick everything released from here on out to the final release of the film! :)

We've dissected just about everything else, so what else is there to do? ;)  Though it would be nice to digest the image for a while before blowing it apart with "why not do it this way" posts....

I DO like the new shot and it probably is just because I'm so used to the old material that it stands out as it does for me, but what're you gonna do?  I by no means hate the shot or have any suggestions on how to tweak it.  It's just...different...and that's quite alright by me!  Taken with the rest of the sequence, continuity is preserved shot to shot and that is a great thing indeed.  In the context of the entire film, shots before and after this one will most likely look amazing as usual and make the whole even better than the small snippets.

Looking forward to next week's pic!

I know this is a work-in-progress, but going through it frame-by-frame (its so short, I'm justified!) I noticed that the falling walker doesn't move for the first frame.  I KNOW you're going to fix it, but I can't be too safe by not saying anything.

It's impossible to see in the full motion, I'm just having a great time flipping back and forth as everything moves but the walker defies all logic and stays perfectly still!

I played back that portion frame-by-frame just to see what you mean, and you are correct. The very first frame of that falling walker is the same as the following frame. While everything else is inmotion, the walker is just frozen in mid-air for those 2 frames. Then it falls. In motion it is virtually impossible to spot, but I see what you mean. I'm sure Ady is still tweaking these shots, though.

As far as the clip goes, WOW! I have nothing to complain about with this clip. I think it is a vast improvement over the original shot. To my eyes, there is nothing wrong with the mountains at all.

[indirectly] Reminds me of one time I was driving down a road this winter where there were open fields and the snow was blowing so hard...and it felt like I wasn't even moving. It's was kinda scary, actually.

Anyway, those are some great Wampa pics you linked to. :)

Damn good job adywan. I have always bitched about the dreary look of the battle of hoth. Way to pwn that walker LOL.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas
