Funnily enough that's exactly what i've been working on. Here they are, although not yet quite finished:

You may want to play with/consider blurring the buildings more and more as they recede into the background due to atmospheric effects (like when you look at a city from far away and it has an almost transparent bluish look).  Maybe that was one of the problems with the city effects of the prequels was that everything in foreground to background looked sharp, when you would have focal issues and atmospheric effects that could have made the scenes more realistic.

Things like the monorails and air traffic could be nice visually, but at the same time the focus should be on the main action, not the stuff moving in the background.

I would nix the trains, but maybe put those slow pulsing red lights that buildings here have on the top (for airplanes at night) and have one or two cloud cars VERY far in the distance... maybe just reduced to a black dot with running lights.  Maybe something enough to bring the city to life (like maybe the addition of audio effects to indicate a busy city behind and underneath them) but not enough to pull away from what we are supposed to be paying attention to.

Some of those ideas I'm very keen on but one of the things I remember from seeing the film all those years ago was the feeling of dread that such a huge city being so quiet instilled in me at the time (I'm not sure if that was a deliberate directing decision or just down to not having enough money to bring the place to life back in 1980).

It foreshadowed that something wasn't right about the place (with the Imperials kicking around it would make sense for Lando to try and keep as many people away from danger as possible without looking like he was...you know, administrate casual).

The daytime scenes kind of blew that out of the water but the quiet did set a tone which was backed up by Leia's apprehensions.

Fuck the "forshadowing" idea Adywan.....just do what yoou do best. :)

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

I'm glad it doesn't look like paintings now. ROTJ has a lot of that obviously at least in 1080p

I think the 2nd pic's buildings are from the SE extended falcon's platform aproach! Wich is a good thing i think!

I think we all want Adywan to do what he wants to a degree he is satisfied with but atmosphere is part of that.

If he feels that the quietness in that scene is deliberate and not down to the limitations of the day (and I'm not sure either way) it makes sense to keep the scene quiet (just better looking), if he feels it was just down to the what could be done in 1980 then he definately can do what he wants with the "forshadowing" idea. It's his project and I was merely pointing out possible nuances to the scene which he is probably aware of already.

Still amazes me that Lucas Arts gets upstagged on a weekly basis by ady. Looks flipping amazing man, really looking forward to the release. What you've shown so far looks phenomenal, AHN was done well but in my opinion you have really come a long way with your skills.

it's been said before and i'll say it again - this is amazing!! i thought your version of "a new hope" was impressive but this looks like it is going to be event better.  just hope you don't take the lucas route and now have Yoda and Luke dueling it out with lightsabers during his training  :)

o_o When reading through the thread, there are times when I am totally blown away. One of them was about 30 seconds ago. Going from the wistful discussion about redoing those shots to seeing what at first I assumed to be a beautiful mockup of them was remarkable enough, When I realized Ady had posted them, it stunned me. Those shots look absolutely gorgeous. Amazing job. I can't believe the 2004 dvds looked so bad.

Not to be anal, but, do the two new shots have continuity? The building placement looks completely different. That being said the new shots at the very least are visually pleasing.

Also, didn't some kind of tram pass under in one of the new shots? Is that still going to be there?

Yes, i've been keeping an eye on the continuity of buildings. as you can see from the shots below but they added a large building placed behind the platform in the approaching shots that knocks out the continuity. I tried adding the building to these mattes but it just didn't look right and took over the shot so I'm either going to have to try and omit it from the SE approaching shots or just screw continuity for one shot.

I still haven't finished the mattes yet, these were more of a teaser.

The buildings are actually more blurred already the further back they are but its difficult to see due to the small res of the pictures. There is also quite a bit of sky traffic too but again hard to spot. I already have cloud cars flying past as well as distant glows from engines, like the ones seen in the SE. The monorails is also still in there. Its hard to see without seeing moving images.

I think it was more to do with FX limitations or budget reasons back in 1979. I always saw it as a busy mining colony. I think if it was too quiet then Han would have been suspicious the moment they arrived. plus we saw all the activity inside the city pre-SE so i guess it was always intended to be a busy place.

If I remember correctly in the SE DVD the consistency of the millennium falcon when entering cloud city is off. The falcon is thinner in the the new CG shots and thicker in the old shots. I think this is most obvious when it lands on the platform.

Once the ship has docked it's back to it's usual thickness.

Something to look at AdY?

yeh i always thought it looked a bit flat but having looked at it closer it seems the shadowing is off giving it the flat effect. Its the same CG model that is used in the previous shot when being pursued by Slave 1 and also used in ANH SE and it looks fine then. I'm not sure what i can do with it but something does need to be done.

I found some transparency issues while the Falcon is being chased by Star Destroyers.  That's just ridiculous.

yeh, i mentioned this previously. the whole film has serious transparency issues , many which are impossible to fix without having the original separate elements. They figured out a way to minimize the black matte lines for the hoth battle then used it for the rest of the FX shots. They did the same thing with ROTJ too. In the opening shots the Shuttle becomes transparent and you can see endor through its wings.

adywan, do you have a photo album comparing all the old shots and your shots? i really enjoyed looking through your work in picture form for star wars (yeah, yeah, a new hope now!)

No, there won't be one until the movie is complete because many shots go through changes throughout the editing process it just wouldn't be worth starting one yet

Ady, I think that large building would not be seen in those two shots anyway, as it would be to far to the left from those angles you've done there. Really though, I'd rather you screw continuity a bit than cut out any of those falcon SE Cloud City fly-in shots.

Can't some transparency issue be fixed by isolating the part (Like in the cockpits looking out) that is see thru and freezing the element? I know if the ligting/shadows change as the snowpeeders banks it would be harder to do.

It seems like seeing thru the shuttle wings would not be hard to fix if u isolate the shuttle somehow. It's kinda hard to explain.

Hello friends

Been away for a while, downloaded the 67 mb AT-AT attack movie, I must say it was a feast for the eyes ! thank you Adywan !

1 thing though, at 25 seconds into the movie a lot of rebel snow troopers run from 1 side of the trench to another..and in the back you can see a destroyed Cannon or something and black smoke o.0

I am sorry of this might have mentioned before, trying to catch up mates :D

Did you notice this by any chance?

this is before the AT-AT's open fire..

Star Wars, this is my good friend continuity, you haven't really met properly but I think you'll get along...

Amazing how dull the 2004 shots look in comparison.

Some more great work there Adywan, thanks for the preview.  Just lovin' the vibrancy of the colour, and the look of the sky in your version.  The work on the buildings looks great also, of course.

Although your shots there aren't finished yet, I'm curious to see if you are going to be amending the look of the Millennium Falcon's cockpit windows in any of these shots.  For instance, in the shot at the top here, the windows are totally blackened out (which I quite like in that actual shot), whereas in the other two shots shown here, one has a 'reflective' look, while the other has a 'grey' look.

Just curious if you are keeping the current looks, or not.  Happy either way.

Oh, and have you considered if it would be an idea to add the 2 red lights at the end of the MF's front 'prongs' to come on, somewhere when it lands, in the top shot?  Just another thought to think over.

Amazing work on cloud city, Ady!

I look forward to seeing if the "citizens escaping cloud city" works out...I think that'll add to the chaos thats happening...

Oh! I thought of something the other day...obviously you're gonna have to have another cameo in ESB:R...so you should definantly put your face on the ice cream dude!

Hopefully i will be using a model shot for the Falcon instead of the painted matte because it lacks detail so the windows will be changed. There are actually a couple of things that i need to fix for the landing shot that i'm really surprised that ILM didn't fix for the SE. The main one is the tiny cloud car that looks like it flies right through the falcon. If they had digitally re-composited all the FX for the SE then this mistake would not still be there. I'm starting to really question the truth of what was said in all those making of the SE docs.

The other thing in that shot is that as the falcon lands on the platform you can  see the platform moves/ wobbles but the matte sections remain static. And i have already added the falcon lights to this shot but i like the idea of them turning on as it lands so i'm probably going to go with that idea.

Ady: I take it you are considering using the EMPIRE menu scene (or scenes) with your Revisited version (such as the MF approaching Cloud City, etc)?

I know this has been posted before, but here you go (again, maybe?)!:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etaA9xWsjbU

If there is a way to incorporate all of these clips, be it Cloud City, Dagobah or Hoth (minus the parts with the actual menus, naturally) that would be pretty spectacular!   I also hear that there is an asteroid chase menu screen as well?  I'm wondering if someone could post all of those different menu screens?

I also take it that the "big huge building" on the right rear of the MF is getting removed?  In fact, you could probably remove the BHB as well as the light beige one also behind the MFs center/right (the one that is kind of poking above the MFs engines).  Could just add in a shorter building and more sky to keep the focus on the Falcon, not to mention the MF model kind of blends in with that background building.
