I'd really be interested in knowing what ideas were planned, but won't happen.
nothing was planned necessarily.....just a few things he'd like to have done, or logically WOULD have done if the original unaltered film had been available in hi-def, or the original audio in enough channels....
this is a question for Adywan regarding the first shot of the executor Bridge with vader.
Have noticed throughout the film that Vader seems to have 2 personal guards. They appear in various scenes.
1. Removing needa dead body.
2. Standing beside Vader with the bounty hunters.
3. Standing outside his quarters when piett enters
However at the start of the bridge scene there is only one guard on the right hand side. So i made this little mock up picture (not very good at this) which show two guards on either side and thus eliminating the officer on the left (which i think is clearly piett.)

will you be altering this or leaving it at it stands?
Sorry the picture never came up
Will try again
i am confused now sorry about this it driving me potty

I'll be leaving it as it stands. the second guard could just be a few paces from the other but be hidden.
And Ronster, love seeing your ideas. Even though they probably aren't what i would want to do for this edit, they could be of use to other editors. So don't feel that just because i may say no to an idea that you should stop.
Well, there's nothing saying that if anything is added, it's just when the Falcon is coming back (ie similar to the background stuff in The Last Battle in ANH:R, you just show the TIEs above the city fighting with cloud cars and other ships trying to escape, with smoke coming from where the city on top is being pummeled).
Hell, at least show a plethora of ships in the distance all around the upper area of the frame showing the mass evacuation. ANYthing to add some life and show what Lando gave an order for.

In response to the above image, I had always assumed that the threat of the Empire meant taking over Cloud City, not necessarily destroying it. Think Martial Law, not Mass Execution. Though it could be argued that the Empire WOULD do a mass slaughter, in this case I just thought it would lead to the lockdown of Cloud City more than anything, with the only certain fear of death being put upon the main characters, though that also isn't guaranteed since the capture of a high ranking rebellion leader like Leia would be worth the effort, even if it wasn't very effective in ANH.
If I were to add anything to the shot of Cloud City as the Falcon fled, it would be a Star Destroyer arriving to blockade and (offscreen) drop Stormtroopers off. But I do think seeing random ships evacuating in the background is already enough.

Curious about this one myself. Can't imagine what it is!
Please excuse the small size of this mockup, but this is what I mean by just adding one or more Star Destroyers just above Cloud City to show more of their presence. One may also assume that the TIEs came from it to chase the Millennium Falcon after Luke is rescued.
BUT, not a super big deal to add either, I will admit now. I'm not fighting for it, but just wanted to place an alternate idea to having smoke and fire coming from the city.

Take this as consideration, we never see big starships into the atmosphere of any planet in the old trilogy. This was established in the new trilogy. I like your idea anyways.

Somehow I never realized that till you mentioned it. Interesting note.
If I were going to add the idea into an edit, I'd likely only do it in this shot. Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think there is another view of Cloud City's top surface again after this (Special Edition not being counted).
In motion, it could just be the Star Destroyer slowing down to that point as it arrives. I would've just done a video mockup, but felt an image got the point across well enough in this instance.

Yes exactly, this is how I viewed it too. Unless Cloud City put up a direct fight against the Empire, which we never saw them doing (and adding such elements would only alter the story and distract from the current narrative), it wouldn't make sense for the Empire to open fire and cripple/destroy Cloud City.
Not a bad idea with the Star Destroyer at Cloud City, but I wouldn't push for it either.
@Ronster: Regarding Lando saying, "What about those fighters?", nothing needs to be done about that. It can be assumed that, sometime during their flight out of there, they did notice some Tie Fighters approaching the city from a different/opposite direction.
The only thing that has niggled me about this segment of the movie (but it shouldn't necessarily be changed from how it was originally) is the amount of time the Falcon initially had to escape Bespin - from the time when they leave the pad all the way to when Luke telepathically communicates with Lea. Because of the editing and everything that has happened on screen, you feel like they would have been way out in space already by the time Luke "speaks" to Lea (not in the clouds, still), especially when you compare the sequence of them quickly returning to rescue Luke and quickly leaving the planet. This is my theory for why Lucas added the various clips of Vader's shuttle, to give the viewer a sense of time passing by (although I think we all agree it wasn't done right and so it didn't help).
And lastly, I agree with whoever pointed out that Lea points upward (with Lando and Chewie also looking upward) at the Super Star Destroyer when in the next shot we actually see it much lower. To correct that, I think it would look good and be easiest to have that cockpit view be adjusted so we are looking further up through the upper windows, where Lea would have seen it when pointing.
I assumed they were flying around to the other side of Bespin before going out into space. Sort of flying "undercover" in a way. But when they went back and caught the attention of the TIE Fighters they lost their opportunity for an easy escape and had to get to space ASAP to go to lightspeed.

As I said....I'm not aware of anything Ady specifically planned, but then later discovered he could not achieve (not to say it never happened, but if it did, I don't know about it). There are, however, times when something would be suggested to Ady (by one of us from the inner circle) and he would explain why it could not be done (while sometimes suggesting that if things were not thus he WOULD want to do it).
An example for you (this isn't meant to stir up another debate, Ady has already said he can't do this):
I brought up the issue of R2 plugging into the power socket on Bespin and frying himself. It always bothered me in the SE that they put in such a huge delay between him deploying his interface tool (hehehe) and him actually plugging in and getting shocked. I had counted out the time, and it was something like 13 seconds that we're supposed to believe he deployed, and then just sat there....waiting for the camera to come back onto him before continuing his movement. It's ridiculous. So I had someone chop up a few different edits for me....and got the time down to half, and then to a couple of seconds....and presented Ady with the 2 options. What I had asked of my editor was that he ignore the audio aspect....I simply wanted to see if the visual could be spliced in such a way as it didn't feel off. Additionally I was hoping we could recover the few seconds of R2 that were lost in the SE edit....his interface appendage (just gets funnier everytime) has some lights on it that pulse at one point, and this was lost in the SE cut.
Ady explained to me that as much as he'd have liked to change it back to something closer to the original the audio was too heavily layered and flattened into one channel in the only available source for him to do much about it. I believe that Lando's PA announcement to Bespin was the specific source of the problem...but I do not recall if there were more constraints he mentioned.
There you go...

Okay, that makes sense - I buy that. That's what I really like about these forums, you get the opportunity to see/understand certain things a little differently (generally for the better) when it's discussed with others.

Well, the idea would be to keep it relatively small. I wouldn't want to see "mass destruction" per se so much as TIEs shooting down the pod cars attacking them as they cover ships fleeing the city. I would at least show the engine lights of multiple ships leaving the city, and maybe show the lights going out as the city is abandoned/deserted.

To be honest, it's been so long since I've watched the GOUT I wasn't even aware there had been changes like that to the pacing at all in the SE. Excuse me if this sounds dumb, but why can't Ady just use the original GOUT/Laserdisc audio to fix that segment?

That's a good supposition. I always assumed that the moment the Falcon blasted off from the platform that the Imps called out to the flight deck to intercept it - especially given Vader expected Leia and Chewie to be taken to his ship.
That would explain the TIEs in atmospheric pursuit and Lando may have been attempting to use cloud cover to mask their getaway. His concern for the TIEs of course coming after Leia tells him to turn around and go back for Luke.
As to an ISD being put into the shot - I would advise against it. I always assumed the Executor was the only ship in orbit - especially given the stealthy nature of the Empire being AT Cloud City. A fleet of SDs would have probably given Lando a lot more concern about their intentions when they first arrived, rather than simply telling him Han and Leia were simply needed for questioning to find Skywalker.
I think the scene as it was originally edited and paced, was perfect in tone, tenor and intensity. Adding anything else (including Vader's shuttle) was totally unnecessary and ruined the pacing.
I think Ady will rightfully handle this and help us old timers appreciate what a true SE should have been.
I find your lack of faith…disturbing

I agree with keeping it as is. This is just one of those "well, I wouldn't kick her out of bed in the morning at least" type of changes.
I felt that the stealthy part is necessary, but that doesn't necessarily mean the Empire didn't invade Cloud City further, after the fact (and offscreen), since, as Lando replied to Han Solo's question earlier, the Empire could shut the place down for NOT being under Imperial rule.
Han: Aren't you afraid of the Empire finding out about this operation? Shutting you down?
Lando: It's always been a threat...
But he hoped his deal to betray Solo would take this worry away. We all know how that went. :)
So, in that sense, I could imagine a Star Destroyer or two arriving at some point to deploy enough troops to take the city for the Empire.

The way I understood is was that there were not enough distinct channels of audio in earlier versions. Shots have been added (of the city, as Lando speaks over the PA), and the timing of R2 getting shocked has been heavily drawn out, so the original audio wouldn't work as is.......meaning that Ady would need all the different parts in separate channels to be able to remix them in a completely new order (not original, and not SE either).

No No No it's not me....
I certainly not very interested in community projects, or creative projects, or remakes of things done by the fans, or scrutinizing details to try and come up stuff, let alone devote my own time and effort.
:)
@Oh_riginal Putting a star destroyer above cloud city does nothing....And changes nothing.... But I do believe you nailed it when you said you don't need to see anything like ties or star destroyers... I am all for hearing the empires presence increase without seeing it but not bothered if it stays as is in the original... It's a small fix for Lando's lame excuse not to go back that is all too convenient which ever way you look at it and it feels like nothing at all has changed between leaving and having to go back.
Cranking up the tension....With small smattering of touches and creating more of a crescendo to Lukes rescue from the Love of his pals that was what I was aiming for. And that Leia and Chewie were actually putting their lives on the line and Lando's to save Lukes Life.
I have a question for any of the team who can answer I would be interested...
What is the main motivation for replacing the canyon shot... Is it just the background Matte?
And one last thing on this will we see any destroyed tie fighter debris in this new version?
