STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION — Page 310

I noticed on the 1080p Episode 1 thread recently, that Ripplin jokingly (I think) suggested a 'Blu, not Blue!' campaign request should be taken up.  But seriously, one of the worst aspects of the SE DVD release was the awful colouration that was evident throughout.

The work that Adywan put into improving it (and continues doing on 'Empire:R' too) has dramatically enhanced things for the better considering the sources he had to use.  Which got me thinking....that although I'm keen to see an eventual better quality, anamorphic release of the Original Trilogy available on BluRay for the masses (GOUT version, with some kind of SE too if they must)....I truly hope that they are not cursed with the often overdarkened, oversaturated colouration issues of the current SE versions!

I don't know who's fault / 'creative decision' it was, but the quality of the SE DVD colouring compared to the originals is distinctly inferior and I fear the worst.  I therefore 'second that motion' by Ripplin!  :)

I turned on the SpikeTV airings of the 2004 editions (cropped to 16:9) the other day and even my wife pointed out how stinking dark it is in Luke's garage.  It's ridiculous.  I don't know how that happened, but its inexcusable.

That's one of the things that always bugged me.

I don't think Blu-ray is anamorphic at all, if I'm not mistaken. Only DVDs come in anamorphic.

As far as I know, anamorphic only applies when a widescreen dvd is stretched vertically onto the 4:3 frame so it can have the maximum possible resolution on widescreen tvs. Since a blu-ray image has full 1080p resolution, no stretching is required at all. Therefore the term "anamorphic" has no relevance.

Correct, 1920x1080 is 1.78:1 ratio, and any wider ratios such as 2.35:1 are letterboxed within that frame, so there is no 'anamorphic' in a DVD sense for Blu-ray.

The specs do include the option of 1440x1080 which could be flagged as anamorphic, but I have yet to see any disc use this.

And why would they? Anamorphic on DVD serves to increase the resolution of a widescreen image in what is an inherent 4:3 frame, so that a widescreen image only has to be expanded once (horizontally) instead of twice. But using 1440 x 1080 frame on Blu-ray would be a reduction in image definition, so why would anyone use that?

One less worry for us all then.  My main fears for any future 'colouration' still stand however.

Hullo,

I was wondering about something that perhaps could be changed, when Luke, Obi and the droids drive/float (whatever :p ) into Mos Eisley there are 4 stormtroopers just as they enter the city, 2 on each side of the street.

The things is that the ones you see on the right side of the street are just a copy of those on the left side, you see this as one of the troopers turns his head to look at an alien or something, on the right side the trooper does the same at the exact same time, but looking at nothing.

They were added to the special edition, perhaps one of then can be moved, deleted or made not to turn his head?

Just to follow up on that question, I'd imagine it's for stuff like Star Trek: Remastered- HD 4:3 images.

But that wouldn't be anamorphic, which is what the suggestion was. Putting a 4:3 image into a 16:9 frame isn't the same as putting 16:9 or 2.4:1 into a 4:3 frame.

Yeah, I know- I was referring to the uses of a 1440 by 1080 resolution if "everything" is now made in widescreen 1080p HD. : ) The option seems to be there from what I see for the types of HD cameras Ady pointed out as well as the few older movies/tv shows that have been transferred in HD in a 4:3 format.

I was half joking, I suppose. ;) It was more about the pun, but seriously, it kinda makes sense, as long as the Blu-Ray versions don't have the blue tint as well...(who knows?!)

I dunno, I think I feel like everyone else in that my trust in LFL releasing a quality version of the movies gets lower every time they do release something. If they're not even putting the proper effort into the version that George himself wants out there, what hope is there for any other version? :p

I just recently saw an interview with Steve Sansweet from Chicago Comic-Con where he mentioned they're still working on an ULTIMATE STAR WARS blu-ray release with all the behind the scenes footage and all the deleted scenes and what have you. The disappointing thing he said though was basically, "yeah we already have the HD transfers." He also said that we should be seeing that come out, "within the next few years."

Attention my fellow fans,

I have just learned how to convert video clips in HD vids without distorting the picture.  That being said, I am now willing to re-upload ANH:R to YouTube in it's correct aspect ratios.  Before I do, I want to get the green light from Adywan as well as all of you.  If you want me to proceed, let me know.
