Bmadden, I'm content to let you have the last word on this, but I do feel the need to say one more 2 cents (I know, "boooring" but I don't want to risk anymore misunderstanding).

If adywan is upset with the feedback, then well, sorry to be blunt, but he should have thought of that before he asked for it!
This thread simply shouldn't exist.

And it's not the same as George Lucas at all because Lucas didn't ask for or listen to fan feedback when making his special editions. He just threw them out there and then after some people had complained he basically just told them "tough sh**" (not in those exact words of course). Then released a new version anyway, that had some other changes, only a couple of which were related to suggestions fans had made about the first ones.

Lucas actually has the money to make all the changes fans want and theoretically release a dozen versions of Star Wars appealing to the many fan desires. adywan on the other hand is a fan editor who is taking his sweet time, using consumer level tech to create an edit for free. If he realized feedback was going to burn him out, he shouldn't have put up this thread. He just should have announced it and then released it and then logged off. Mission accomplished!

But I think he's tough enough to survive even the most critical of responses. And we haven't seen him make a host of changes only to be confronted with completely different sets of demands and criticisms, that's just an excuse to dismiss the first wave of criticism. To that I'd say "if you're already happy with the movie how it looks, then convert the Xvid to a DVD, burn and be happy... after all, it's still a heckuva lot better than the 2004 edition, right?"

Some of you may feel that it's unfair to "look a gift horse in the mouth" but I say that every single criticism that's been posted on here, no matter how nitpicking is defensible and justified because adywan ASKED FOR IT.

So rather than tell people that they need to accept it for what it is and be happy or don't watch it and shut up... just accept the fact that there's criticism and let adywan make up his own mind, unless you want to pester him about how he should be reacting to it, maybe because you're afraid he might actually agree with some of the criticisms...

There, I'm done. PM me if you want to argue about it some more...

For me SWR isn't the second coming, but it's fantastic (and the best of the fan edits of ANH I've seen thus far). And fixing the cut forearm shot would make the one "meh" moment (that sticks out in an otherwise amazing production, considering the budget and team) into a "cool, fitting" moment.

PS: Anbesol works wonders (until you can get to the dentist).

Kurgan, I think the point should be made that people who liked the xvid version of Star Wars: Revisisted, and who thought it was fine as is, weren't "defending" Adywan but rather were doing the very same thing you are doing now: freely voicing their opinions. I happen to be one of those people who pretty much liked it as is; that doesn't mean I was trying to be a "good guy" and distance myself from those whose reaction to the edit differed from mine. It just means I was stating my opinion. If that makes you feel as though you're being targeted, then the issue is yours and no one else's.

As for comments to the effect that it's impossible to please everybody with this edit, I think that's a fair, factual statement. Based on what I've seen, it would be impossible for Adywan to make every change asked for -- speed up the TIEs, I like the TIE reveal, remodel the TIEs, the TIEs look great as they are, put a severed human arm in there, put a flipper in there, return the conversation in Ben's hut to the original version, keep the conversation in Ben's hut as is, etc, etc. There will always be something someone would like to change that will be at odds with another fan's wishes. Given this situation, I believe it's very accurate to say that not everyone can be pleased with this edit.

Finally, yes, Adywan has been and continues to be very open to criticism and feedback, but he himself said the amount of nitpicking going on here was a real downer. While I agree everyone is within their rights to keep posting their thoughts and feelings (that is what a discussion board is all about, right?), I just think there's not much point in doing so anymore if it's to pick apart the edit. Nothing more is going to come of it, and I think it's more important to focus on what we have received than what little we did not.

Holy sh*t! I take a few minutes to write a post and there are a dozen in the interim...

Just forgot to say sorry to hear about the tooth Ady... I'm in Canada, and am not sure what the medical situation is over there in the UK, but I hope you have as speedy a recovery as possible.

And Kurgan... I hope my post didn't sound aggressive. I just wanted to offer a retort to some of the comments in your post. I definitely value freedom of speech and opinion, and hope you and everyone else keep saying what's on your minds.

Incidentally, when's the last time Adywan's been in here? I think he wisened up and split this popsicle stand awhile ago.

I think he ought to do his ESB edit in total secret and let us know after it is done and out the door.

It is a fairly simple and evident truth that Ady has this thread to ping pong ideas, criticism and praise. His project became the biggest edit on the map, so he gets a lot more of ALL these things.

He can handle it, but of course when you finish a creative endeavor, you just want everyone to love it. Hearing criticism sucks, no matter how much we think we want it.

Lord knows how much I have hated hearing my shots need to be redone! Ever since I first started on Babylon 5, I'd finish a shot, I'd think it was great, and someone in authority would come along and tell me what needed to be fixed.

They'd walk away, I'd give them the finger behind their back and then, grumbling, make the changes.

And you know what? 9 times out of 10 it turned out better. Even if the change wasn't neccessary, just the act of taking another stab at it gave me new ideas and improved the process. If I had a bunch of people saying "leave Mojo alone, his work is great and if you don't like it, too bad!" I never would have improved and learned.

Ady is a big boy and no one has any authority over him to force him to change anything, but I'd bet the farm that every time he revisited a shot, whether it was because forum members cried out or he just decided to take another swing at it, it turned out better.

He should be commended for taking ANY criticism to heart, because so many artists, if left to be their own boss, simply would let their egos take over, refuse to believe anything is wrong with their work and just "do whatever they want."

Like, for example, George Lucas!

Thank the Maker, Ady has not gone that route.

Feedback and criticism is a good thing for anyone with a healthy ego. There is no point in asking people to stop, partly because this is a public forum, partly because Ady can ignore what he wants but MOSTLY because it's the only way anything gets better.

@ Mojo_LA: I agree, criticism is a very good tool to improve from. I enter alot of CG challenges, and I will finnish a entry thinking I'm going to win or place high, only to find out I didn't place at all. The criticism use to hit me pretty hard, but I have learned to use it as a tool, and it has helped me get better and better. Now the criticism doesn't effect me nearly as much anymore. It still bothers me a little but it's nothing I cant handle. However, there does come a time where the criticism takes on the form of ass kissing and trying to play favorites. I have seen it happen on many forums when someone gets a little fame, and then all the sudden a bunch of people will suck up to him hoping to gain something above the others. That kind of stuff is a real turn-off and starts fights real fast. There also comes a point where the criticism goes too far.

Of course this is just my own opinion.

EDIT: Good to see your still around Ady, and get well man, you deserve it.

Perhaps Ady's next project should be an edit of "The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross".... y'know, mellow us all out

EDIT:Maybe you could even digitally insert a kitten for good measure...

I want Adywan to do the exact opposite of every decision made during the whole editing process. Then I'll be happy.

Have you considered trying to squeeze Adywan's logo in there somewhere? Not the whole thing, but maybe the "ADYWAN" part?
I actually made this cover months ago and didn't have access to the logo at that time. I think it looks pretty good as is, but may "revisit" it sometime in the future ( pardon the pun). For now, it won't be changing.

Savage do you have matching full face disc art for that cover?

Unfortunately, no. I'm not a big fan of printed labels. If I do make one, however, I'll let you know!

BTW, for my 2 cents on the great flipper debate, I think the Dr. Evazan hand will look great, though I didn't mind the flipper at all...

O.T. or No T., baby!

In regards to the PiF system - I propose that we set up a hierarchal tree based on members' locations and hardware to get this out as quickly and as cost-effectively as possible.

I would love to PIF the DVD-9 as I have the ability to burn dual layers, only problem is hard drive space. I just don't have enough to store 9 gigs of data at the moment or at any length of time. Gotta get another hard drive before I can PIF anything.

@ Bobocop: How about getting your daughter to take care of my gopher problem before they ruin my plumbing lines and cost me a fortune in repairs.

Bobocop, I'm not sure if that's image's creation is inspired by/a reference to something larger that I don't know about, but as it is right now to me, that's just strange (in a smile/laugh-inducing way)! I love it! (nice work on the shadows too)

Speaking of the DVD...

Adywan,

1. Have you prepared an audio commentary track? If not, you might consider delaying your DVD production. Doing an audio commentary is great fun and can be cathartic after a long project.

2. Please contact me about PIF(ing), because I am in Asia (Hong Kong/Taiwan region) and do not want to wait until the next ice age to see your edit. I still cannot render your file properly (please advise concerning your codecs).

I can burn DVD-9 (I do it regularly), but must emphasize to everyone the importance of using EXPENSIVE media: Verbatim is the only way to go. If you burn on anything else and then forward it, you are probably sending a coaster. ImgBurn + MDS + Verbatim = DUAL LAYER SUCCESS

I prefer NTSC (the 4% pitch compromise is offensive to me), but I own the Pioneer DV-696 and can watch/test anything, so please count me in for ANY format.

3. Torrenting is better than PIFing (others here have already tried to make this point). Once the hive is established, DVD-9 can be had in 5 to 7 days with low to moderate transfer rates (say, ~15KB/s). The hive for your AVI is already so healthy that I needed only 6 hours to DL.

It wasn't a reference to anything in particular. We had a pic of her on the bed holding her shirt out like wings, and the prairie dogs from a recent trip to the zoo. She's gonna kill me once she's old enough to realise what I'm doing to her pictures
