Hi everyone,

I've been very interested in doing a Star Wars fan edit for a while, before I step into the thick of things I thought I would have a go at rotoscoping lightsabers, I managed to copy the Vader vs Ben scene using DVD decrypter and and then import to Premiere, from there I saved as an flm file and imported the flm file into photoshop 6 I think it is and for a laugh changed Vaders Saber to green so I can get the hang of things.

Now I managed to google some good tutorials for lightsaber rotoscoping, I followed them down to the last word and then rendered my still images back into a film.

However....upon playback I noticed that the original red glow of Vaders saber was showing through my work. How do I solve this?? is there a way of removing the original saber from the film footage? would it involve painstakingly painting it out or is there another method with freeware I can use?

Rotoscoping often is painstaking work. Can you post some examples? - especially shots of yours that you are having problems with.

I may be able to help you out but your descriptions are kinda vague...

Hi there,

Thanks for replying, unfortunatley my drive crashed and I lost the originals, however to give you an example I have redone Lukes Sabre in Jedi as blue instead of green, there not very good pictures as I have still alot to learn about photoshop, however when I was doing the blue blade you can see the green underneath seep through, any suggestions on how I can over come this would be great also any suggestions on making those sabres look better would also be very much appreciated.

Did you save the light saber effects on their own and then recompile with the underlying footage? I'd say you WILL have to remove the original glows but a lot of shots in ROTJ will make that very difficult.

I knid of need you to really explain things in detail to understand how you've done it and if there's a better way.

And I mean this in the nicest way possible but your effects come on too strong, you need to be a bit more subtle for them to be believable.

I would suggest finding some better / cleaner images to practice on and get a real feel for things to begin with.

A good idea might be adding sabers where there were none before [for practice]. Maybe try adding glows to regular swords?

Thanks for the replys,


Ok I've been using Photoshop 7, luckily I've got this at work so I can practive here to.., anyway the steps I have taken ares as follows -

1.Import image and create a new layer
2.On the new layer I will either use the Polygon Lasso or the pen tool to create my saber blade.
3.On the same layer I created a Gaussian Blur and add an outer glow with the desired colour.

I took your advice and practiced on a couple of pictures -
