Basically all your just said (meaningfulness, functionality, immersion, especially “malfunctions”, etc.) is more or less your personal impression of an art work.

I see Jedi and the PT as broken art works that the mind can’t resist trying to repair.

I see

Bingowings literally said that this was his personal opinion, I don’t get what your problem is

His post history reveals a lot of problems.

Oh no! My thread has turned into some weird debate, just as all the other ROTJ threads have before it. Will we ever have a ROTJ thread where people don’t argue?

Not enough people read the EU.

Maybe I should make an Empire Strikes Back thread. People aren’t in debate about that film.

We will never have a film like Empire again. George Lucas just had to fire Gary Kurtz specifically to ruin my life. If he was still involved everything would be all right with the world.

I try not to make fun of your insane posts too often, but this one was too much for me to resist.

When a franchise has one good sequel and nothing else, that’s never a good sign. And because we can never have good things in life, Gary Kurtz (the REAL father of Star Wars) was kicked out so we would be forever denied the perfect trilogy we deserved at the beginning.

No, you had it right the first time. Lucas did it because he hates you, specifically. Also, all problems in the world would have been fixed if he wouldn’t have done it.

Well, Anchorhead is something of a '77 purist …

There is something special about 77 by itself. The Empire is a secular organization that reluctantly works with Vader, Vader’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Vader and they named him Darth, the galaxy has less communication tech, the Jedi are underdogs, etc.

One thing I know for sure, Rebel One will not save the franchise.

What’s the Wizard of Oz joke in Jedi?

Many people seem to think the “eyeball” robot in Jabbas door is referencing the little fella in Oz’s door.
I think it’s just referencing the same thing Oz was- the ol’ eye looking out the slide-window in a speakeasy door.

I guess maybe the image is more familiar to American audiences than the rest of the planet, but I see no reference to Oz. it’s an old scenario.

I wonder if it’s only me who really, really likes ROTJ?

But I was the perfect age i.e. five so Tarzan, Wizard of Oz and Ewoks didn’t mean a thing.

I love it. Well, the original theatrical cut anyway!

I honestly never noticed the Tarzan reference at all in Jedi, and I’ve watched that film dozens of times. Guess I was too emotionally attached to the film to notice.

It’s a divisive film. More people love it and have nostalgic feelings for it than the PT films and some people love those too.
Other people like myself find it deeply flawed so what do you expect?
All divisive topics will inevitably lead to arguments, just look at the other ROTJ threads.
On the other hand the ROTJ ideas on the wishlist thread are fun so there is amusement and stimulation to be derived from attempting to fix what is seen by some to be broken.

An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition. I’ve done my bit here.

Of course not. I would say that in my aspects I prefer it to ANH, especially when seeing it as ESB-ROTJ pair.

Those threads all are better than this one because this thread’s title sucks.

I would suggest these threads as merge candidates as it does seem as if these points all deserve to be in the same place for the next time someone brings up the topic (which is probably inevitable).
As for the title suckage : http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Return-of-the-Jedi/id/17604/page/1#760426

My problem with ROTJ is mainly with the character development, with only Luke and Vader actually concluding their story arc. Part of this is probably because there are too many characters. Imagine if we had:
-just Luke, Chewie and Lando saving Han, both making Luke’s plan more believable and Lando’s actions conclude his arc;
-Leia coordinate the final attack instead of Lando, putting her in charge and concluding her arc as general/queen;
-Han skillfully infiltrate Kashyyyk with Chewie and his people, instead of stepping on branches and triggering traps.
I wish we had more material to make an “ultimate edit”, but one can only dream :\

P.S.: I just realized the DSII’s explosion is a huge peace symbol (never thought peace could be achieved with war 😄)

Considering this is George Lucas we’re talking about, I think it’s much more likely that he would reference a popular fantasy flick from the 1930s than a historical institution from before then.

Actually, I forgot to mention one of the biggest gripes story-wise with ROTJ, because at this point it’s so ingrained: Leia is Luke’s sister. I mean, Jesus, really? Vader being Luke’s father worked, sure, and it blew everyone’s mind. But Leia is his sister?!? All this does is add soap opera dynamic with no payoff. I remember at the time, people saw it and started joking that Han was Luke’s brother, and Chewie was his dog, etc. It became the subject of parody–the entire Star Wars galaxy was shrinking down to one family. I mean nobody went completely bonkers and claimed Darth and Greedo were childhood friends or that Darth made C-3PO in his basement, but it was still widely ridiculed. And I feel it was a fair criticism.

According to TPM Threepio is Princess Leia’s brother too.

Well this is pretty much the only ROTJ criticism in this thread so far with some actual weight.
