Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 92

It is a very strange ranking, IMO; and one I wouldn’t expect from the franchise’ creative director.

He’s not the “creative director,” he’s just on the story group. As to the why, he was working at Lucasfilm during the prequels, so he probably has a soft spot for them. As for R1, his whole job is EU, and that’s what that movie was, so it’s right up his alley.

I expected TFA to be higher from him, but otherwise, yeah, that seems about right.

That’s the part that tripped me up. I can’t imagine a world where it’s worse than TPM.

Like I said, probably personal reasons relating to his employment with LFL.

This confused me as well. Otherwise, it could be a pretty standard OT.com ranking.

I think I’ve seen (through his tweets) that he’s salty about some last-minute changes Abrams made to TFA without consulting the story group (I remember him specifically talking about the opening crawl being changed at the eleventh hour). And I know he’s got a huge problem with Starkiller Base.

Oh, and since I’m in here:

  1. Empire Strikes Back
  2. Star Wars
  3. Force Awakens
  4. Rogue One
  5. Return of the Jedi
  6. Phantom Menace
  7. Revenge of the Sith

Yep, that’s all of 'em.

The other thing to note is that TFA was handled by Bad Robot, so LFL the production company wasn’t involved as closely as in the other films.

ROTJ is a disappointment so many levels that I have no problem putting R1 (and even TFA, in my opinion) above it. Not sure if I agree with ROTS though.

It has a multitude of problems but it also has some of the greater moments in the Saga. And I’m talking about character shit, not spectacles like Vader butchering Rebels with his lightsaber. In general ROTJ had more substance and for that reason alone I can deal with the Ewoks because I care about the Galaxy and the characters trying to liberate it.

The excruciating 40 minutes at Jabba’s palace alone is enough to make me want to watch something else. The Luke and Vader scenes are great, but they still can’t justify me wasting my time with the parts that I don’t enjoy.

Yeah I don’t have much of a problem with the ewoks, although they are a bit much at times. It’s the Muppets at jabbas palace. I’m working on an edited version that trims it to mainly focus on just jabba as I don’t like him just the side Muppets.

What do you think went wrong after TESB? Besides Gary Kurtz not producing it.

The Rancor scene, the banter between the trio and a decent percentage of the sail barge fight trumps the first two acts of Rogue One for me. While the hologram scene with Galen is great that is only one scene and the only other scene of real note is when Cassian murders that guy in the alley. The only reason I’m even mentioning this is because I’m glad Gareth at least attempted to have some moral ambiguity even though it’s implementation in the film was half assed.

The parts of ROTJ that I enjoy are spread out across the film and that makes for a far better viewing experience imo whereas R1’s are mostly in the last act. A lot of the enjoyment I get out of it doesn’t come in the form of good character moments or anything like that but from nice explosions and the screams of the Rebel Soldiers. That’s something I can’t say about ROTJ’s final act.

I actually feel the opposite. I think the barge sequence is decent, but it isn’t something that justifies watching the rest of the movie for me. I’m actually not a fan of the Rancor fight, so it ends up feeling like filler. The only reason I’d ever have to sit down and watch the whole movie, is just to see the throneroom scenes at the end. With Rogue One, there are scenes throughout that I enjoy. I enjoy pretty much the entirety of the Jedha sequence, for example.

See, I quite like the Jabba stuff; it’s everything slowing down to a crawl between Dagobah and the Battle of Endor that spoils it for me. I love the beginning and I love the end, but I find the middle to be a slog.

(My ranking hasn’t changed, but I haven’t stated it in a while, so ANH = ESB > TFA > ROTJ = R1 > TPM > AOTC = ROTS if anyone wonders where I stand)
