When we can finally all agree on how much of a failure ROTS was, it will truly be a beautiful day.

JEDIT: You clarified, making my post irrelevant. But Beautiful Day is a good song, and I don’t even like U2!

Quick! Somebody mention a good U2 song to balance the double whammy of meh!
I realize that a fanedit of ROTS is easily Even Better Than The Real Thing, but I can’t imagine it actually makes for a good movie.

I know I’m killing the joke and ruining the fun, but I disagree. But I have the advantage of fanedits basically being how I remember them since I got into fanedits in junior high. (10ish years ago). So I don’t remember how bad they originally were, so I actually enjoy it watching Hal’s or l8wrtrs and barely remember what’s cut.

I love the Sweetest Thing b-side and it’s 90s remake.

I don’t deny that ROTS was a failure either, I just don’t think that it’s obviously more or less of a failure than I think TFA was.

I was only expressing my opinion, for which I explained the underlying reasons several times in the past. I do not see the point of explaining the same reasons to the people who are already familiar with them whenever I want to repeat my opinion. Especially since whenever I do restate my reasons behind my opinion I get these kind of responses:
http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/1056497

I’d just like to point out for when you return - if people are already familiar with your reasons then they are also familiar with your actual opinion on the matter which makes continually stating it rather redundant no?

I’m not saying this means you can’t restate it if you wish but you need bring additional, constructive information to the discussion that wasn’t present in your reasons when previously discussing the matter, or pose it from a different perspective in trying to argue your point. Simply interjecting a flat statement into an active discussion that people are already aware of (many times over) is just plain irritating and the form of your statement also has an abrasive element to it that indirectly insults anyone that actually likes the movie.

Continually chucking your throw away statement / insult into the discussion every time it comes up just makes you seem arrogant and an irritating spanner in the works of trying to have an involved discussion with other invested people that contribute constructively. It can also start to come across that you are aggressively pushing you opinion onto others.

Anyway, just some food for thought I’d offer you while you’re on vacation 😉

Jokes aside, I’m beginning to question whether you’re actually interested in learning about opinions different from yours on these movies, or you think that your opinions are to be considered an absolute truth :\

I know my ranking is not orthodox, but here it is:

  1. ESB (very much above all else)
  2. ANH
  3. TFA (the scenario similarities with episode IV are not a disadvantage for me but a great quality that fully exploit the idea that history repeats cyclically)
  4. TPM (especially for emotional reasons, and for George Lucas’s attempt not to repeat the same film, even if everything is not successful)
  5. ROTS
  6. AOTC
  7. ROTJ (the Ewoks are not acceptable for me)
  8. R1 (original score is awful, CGI-Tarkin is totally failed, the story makes no sense and is pre-arranged, it is the only SW that I have seen only once and that I do not want to see again)

I hope that TLJ will figure in pole position…

[Edit: I forgot R1 in my initial post]

Do you think you can convince people that ROTS wasn’t awful? Because I’ve heard all the arguments before and I’ve never found a single one convincing in the slightest. I think anyone who puts any of the prequel movies above any of the other movies is just fooling themselves, because they’re putting three cartoons over five actual movies…but that’s just my opinion.

Well, he doesn’t have to convince me, because I’m already convinced 😃 .
IMHO, ROTS is NOT a great movie at all, you’re totally right. But it is not a huge disaster either, I enjoyed it and it is still better (for me) than AOTC, ROTJ (die Ewoks, die) and this video-game called Rogue One.

I just cannot comprehend how someone can complain that R1 is the video game movie of the group and also claim to have watched both AOTC and ROTS.

Please don’t tell me that CGI-Lea and CGI-Tarkin don’t look like videogame characters…

Anyway, visually speaking, AOTC et ROTS looks like an old video game, I don’t disagree.
My point is that if we talk about the scenario (and not about the visual aspect), R1 is a long and boring linear “shoot them up” game, especially the last battle (where is the big button to transmit the plans ? How, here it is !)

Edit : PS: A friend told me that he liked R1 because it reminded him “Battlefront”…

The argument that two CGI characters don’t look very convincing has nothing to do with the scenario, as you say in your second sentence. so that isn’t a point supporting your assertion that R1 is like a video game.

The simplicity of having to press the big transmit button, sure, that i can buy, it does seem like a very simple puzzle, in fact it does remind me of Myst.

I don’t play Battlefront, but why exactly does this remind your friend of that game? is it because the game has an overlapping plot? that this is a movie with an epic battle?

To be fair, I barely play video games anymore, so when I call AOTC and ROTS video game movies I’m mainly referring to the cutscene-quality plastic-ish look they have…mainly due to how much they are filmed either entirely in a computer or on soundstages with nothing more than platforms and greenscreens.

Rogue 1 looks much more real.

Actually, I don’t play Battlefront either, but I’ll ask to my friend.

Anyway, Battlefront, Myst or even Zelda and SuperMario, you see what I mean…

I agree (except for Lea and Tarkin)!

But I prefer the story of AOTC and ROTS (with politics, romance, treasons, even if it is badly told) than R1 where there is basically no story at all.

The fact is that the point of this thread is hardly about convincing others that ROTS is good or “less bad” than most people think; the main goal here is to give one’s own view of the saga and from what we like the most to what we don’t (or just “like less”). Every time someone thinks ROTS is good, there is always the same guy/bunch of guys (like an Imperialscum mirror with TFA) who come to tell us how shitty ROTS is and how mad are some people to think it’s better than TFA/R1/whatever. Every single time. I didn’t remember when I signed in there was a disclaimer about the fact that the PT was to be disliked on every post and the ST to be loved as much as the OT…
People like myself who think ROTS is better than R1/TFA have explained why on multiple occasions; everyone is entitled to their own opinion. To my point of view it is as mad to think that R1 is almost as good as ANH/TESB as it might to others to think ROTS/ROTJ are good SW entries. So it’s time for this witch hunt to stop for good. Get mature people, accept what others think even if you believe they are wrong.

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

I don’t want to convince anyone of my opinions. ROTS is definitely not a good movie (otherwise we wouldn’t even be talking about it), I just explained what worked for me.
But here’s the problem: generally neither you should think that, since you don’t like something, everyone should agree 100% with you and that you should dismiss the others’ opinions like they are fooling themselves.
Do you think I’m fooling myself? I spoke with the other fans during my time on this forum, and learned about their own points of view, half of them I didn’t even agree with. For example, I disagree with you that TFA has a good story, I think it’s a complete marketing mess. I should think you’re just fooling yourself, right? I didn’t, ever, because I think that, as long as one speaks from his heart, there’s some truth to learn that may also give a better insight of one’s work (in this case that, despite my opinion on TFA’s story, it probably genuinely worked for you and that I should look into it).
It’s not about agreeing or rejecting, it’s about learning from the others.

JEDIT: I agree with you, Malà.

Thank you MalàStrana and John Doom!

Actually, this topic would be retitled as “Ranking the Star Wars films, but only in a single way where you cannot propose your own ranking if it differs from some very active members of OT”…
