Did everyone else watch a different cut of Batman Returns than I did? The one I saw had medocre acting, a poor story, overly campy moments that don’t mesh well with the gothic tone, and about ten minutes of actual Batman. The Penguin was also very cringeworthy.

I second this.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Weird…I had no idea, as I generally ignore that thread.

I’m not convinced.

As far as I’m concerned, the perfect live-action Batman film will never exist until this costume

makes its big screen debut – blue highlights, gray tights, trunks and all.

That being said, Batman '89 is pretty good for what it is (a mistitled Joker film with somewhat weak pacing) and Batman Returns has its moments, overbearing Burtonness and disgusting Penguin garbage notwithstanding.

Oh, and I suppose Batman Forever has its charms, too, few though they may be; I personally like Val Kilmer’s performance, the first suit-up scene (the one without the bat-butt) and Nygma’s riddles.

Batman: The Movie (1966)
Batman (1989)
Batman Returns (1992)
Batman Begins (2005)
By far the best of the Nolan trilogy. The only film where Bale put in any effort. His performance just gets progressively worse from here.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Incredibly overrated. Ledger gives a stellar performance but the rest of the film just falls flat. Batman is barely even a character in the film.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
The fact that Nolan refused to fix Bane’s voice after everyone collectively said, “What did he say?!?” after the big IMAX scene teaser, tells you everything you need to know.

Honorable mentions:
Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1994)
Unquestionably the best adaptation of the Bat that has ever graced any screen. It’s hard to articulate how amazing this series was. The writing, the art design, and performances all are impeachable. Kevin Conroy gave the definitive performance of Batman/Bruce Wayne. Similarly, Mark Hamill has never been topped as the Joker. One of the best television series of all time.
Batman: Arkham (2009-2015)
This is basically the adult spiritual successor of TAS. A fantastic series of games with excellent story and gameplay that has had a major impact on the video game industry and will undoubtedly hold a lasting legacy in the years to come.
Batman (1966)
A tongue in cheek parody of the comics of the time that everyone took seriously. Delightfully fun series filled to the brim with cheeky humor.
Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2008-2011)
Like its '60s predecessor, Brave and the Bold embraced the more colorful side of the character. The series revels in the Batman mythos in its entirety. Taking inspiration from every comic era of the character and using them to tell exciting and a lot of times meta adventures with the “Dark Knight.” It was incredibly fun and surprisingly touching at times in its exploration of the character and his legacy. Not a series to be missed if you’re a fan of the character as a whole.

While I agree with you, I’d argue that Ledger’s performance is one of the prime suspects in The Case of Why The Dark Knight is Overrated.

He was good. He was not transcendent.

Another “rank it yourself” thread, fun:

  1. Batman Returns
  2. DC Animated Shared Universe: Batman The Animated Series / Superman The Animated Series / The New Batman Adventures / Batman Beyond / Return of the Joker / Justice League / Justice League Unlimited
  3. Mask of the Phantasm (as good as rank 2, but not tv series nor tv movie, actual movie released in theaters)
  4. Batman (1989)
  5. The Dark Knight
  6. Batman Begins
  7. The Dark Knight Rises
  8. Batman Forever
  9. Batman & Robin

Still have not finished Batman 1966 & tv series, but it’s fun so I would rank it higher than the boring Nolan flicks. I don’t like “Subzero”, but as part of the animated universe it is ranked second with the others (well, not the Batwoman lame tv movie). BvS remains to be seen, but from what I’m hearing I’m not in a hurry…

It’s funny how many people don’t know what a film is.

Author

Yeah, I probably should have merged 2 and 3 as one rank. Hopefully people will understand it.

Author

No you shouldn’t have included anything that isn’t a film.

Fixed.

I don’t have a big problem with listing TV, but I do think that listing TV along with film is a no-no. Separate lists wouldn’t bother me, because the TV list isn’t affecting the film list.

My beef with all the Nolan films is the fact that Batman is a comic book superhero, but they tried desperately to make it overly-realistic and overly-modern, and that makes them fail as Batman films, and they also failed at the realism they were apparently trying to achieve. The films don’t capture Batman. They capture Dude uses existing military equipment to become a vigilante.

I thought they were fine movies, but not superhero movies, which made me enjoy them more. I probably won’t ever see them again though.
