I need to read more of Flannery O’Connor’s works.
Yes you do, and so do I. I’ve read Wise Blood and a handful of short stories and everything’s been excellent.
Can all 11,000 of these thoughts truly be random?
.
Nothing’s random.

Except quantum mechanics and the like.
Right. But human brains ain’t not none at all no how.
Probably.
So we’re all on the same page?
Probably.

People started firing them off around here in late May.

I think that we’re not legally allowed to start lighting them until the 3rd of July. That didn’t stop people from starting a little early. It’s harder to get away with it in the suburbs of the city, so people don’t push it too hard. When I lived in hick-ass village as a child people would start lighting fireworks over a month in advance. I thought it was fun then, now they just give me a heart attack.

I seriously don’t get American schooling. As far as I can tell, they start a year of school in September of one year, then finish that year in June of the next year. Why not do what we do in Australia and have school start in February and finish in December, with two week holidays sprinkled in over the year, and a six week break in between school years?
Not enough people read the EU.

Summer is in the middle of the year for us (June through September).

In some places the schedule is pushed up a bit. You may have schools where the year starts in early August and ends in mid to late May.
OMG different countries do things differently??? Everybody should do things how WE do it.
Don’t do drugs, unless you’re with me.
IIRC, U.S. school schedules initially developed to revolve around the needs of agriculture, when a lot of kids had to help out on the family farm in the summer months.
We have had year round schedules in California since the 90’s. Not sure about the rest of the country.

Is that everywhere in California?

It still is needed for that reason in a lot of states.

No idea, and as moviefreakedmind pointed out, the traditional summer break model holds sway in farming areas. Lots of farming out here too.

Anybody else ever get strange messages on their answering machine?

You can play the file in VLC. Been trying to decipher what the voice is saying on these for a while. What the other sound is on the second message is anyone’s guess. Maybe the astronauts on the International Space Station keep dialing my house by mistake? 😉

I went through the trouble of trying to make it more listenable and encoded it in MP3:
