ROTS: A particular movie...

Author

 (Edited)

So…let’s say that there’s a particular movie I was thinking about downloading (it’s about a guy that abuses his wife because he thinks that she betrayed him). I’m thinking about downloading it, but I’ve heard that there are 2 versions- a workprint version never released theatrically, and the theatrical version with no timer on the top of the picture.

Is there any difference whatsoever in the workprint version that would warrant a download? Visually, deleted scene-wise, incomplete FX-wise, music-wise, overall sound mix-wise; does anyone know whether there is more than one version of this “particular movie” at this point?

To my knowledge, the version without the timecode was created from the version with a timecode - i.e. they used a filter to de-logo the numbers and re-encoded it, so while less distracting, you now have an XVID that's been encoded twice.

And don't expect this thread to last much longer. Jay doesn't need the legal hassle.

<span class=“Bold”>JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.</span></span>

<span class=“Bold”>Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.</span>

Incorrect, while the original WP could be the source for the non-timecode version (xvid), it certainly isn't ripped from the timecoded print.

Actually, it is not incorrect, since I know people who have complained that they can still make out the numbers. Experience over opinion.

There may be other versions out, but I am not aware of them, which is why I stated "to my knowledge".

[EDIT] According to MF.com, there's a new "DVD rip". Very interesting...

Well, as long as we're not killing this thread yet...

I am aware of the following:

1) Workprint (before and after aspect ratio correction) WITH numbers.

2) Workprint (correct AR) with numbers blurred out (skillfully but obviously can't remove the area entirely)

3) Telecine (slight sync problems towards middle of film) with Russian title and crawl.

At least that's what I've been told is floating around out there. I'm sure there are others. Aarrrrrrrr- damn pirates!

Well, there's apparently a fourth, then, because MF hasn't said anything about the Russian. I suggest anyone who wants more info about this head over to that site.

And eros, you might want to delete that reference, unless you feel like being banned from this site.

Guys, understand that the last thing I wanted was a thread discussing where to find bootlegs. I was just interested in differences between workprint and final film (and maybe digital version), that's all.

What on earth are you talking about? Who said anything about Star Wars?

Anyway, to answer your question, this particular movie's workprint is exactly the same as the theatrical print.

there was a guy selling a 3 hour plus cut of the film on ebay with pre viz and a temp track, but he was pulled from ebay. Don't know if this is the same as workprint because i have not seen it, but i have read the screenplay and novelization and i know there was a lot of deleted scenes even stuff that won't end up on the dvd. Also John Williams wrote more music for the movie than ended up in the film. Too bad theres no ultimate score for episode II or III like episode I. Just like the original star wars lucas was revising the script as the movie was being filmed, so we won't see rough cuts on the dvd. Too bad he won't release the star wars holy grail, the rough cut for episode IV, which only exists in a silent black and white film on 3 reels with partial dialogue and sound that drops out. The Color dailies footage still exist though so this cut could be restored.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

I actually just got back from visiting my wife's parents in China. While I was there I saw the film in question on DVD. Many of the copies I saw had really good picture and sound and were 100% complete.
