ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss! — Page 41

How could they even think of changing the holograms! I think the timed/cut vader breathing/fighting is just brilliant and the action is realistic, that is what sets these films apart. I met Dave prowse in the city toy shop and he was a giant in full vader costume. Obviously he was signing stuff but that was on the back of Jedi. Jedi will always have a strong place in my heart and it’s easily better than anything that has been made since…

No worries man. Oh, I was fortunate enough to meet Dave Prowse at my local comic convention a few years ago. Funny story, I missed my first chance to meet him in 2011, because waited in line half the day to buy tickets to the convention. Luckily, he returned in 2013. I was pleasantly surprised to find out he also played a few characters in Dr. Who.
A series I remember watching as a kid in the 80’s, and being terrified of the intro music.

I’d love to see the footage with Dave prowse saying vader lines in his accent haha. Apparently he was mythed when they dubbed him.

If Vader was in full costume at the toy shop, then that wasn’t Dave Prowse. Dave never did any of the costume stuff for the promotional events like that. Kermit Eller is the best known of the ones that did the Vader events at the time. Not sure if he did the jedi tour though

It had the best space battle of any of the Original Trilogy,

I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this but I actually have come to prefer the Battle of Yavin far more (particularly the revisited version). It’s much easier to follow, with superior tension and it is a really strong space battle when looked at in isolation. Return of the Jedi’s space battle is really awesome but I feel like it maybe has a little more flair and less substance than Yavin. But seriously, revisited takes it to a whole new level.

Bloody hell you are right, all these years I thought father Christmas was real, they did a good job fooling thousands of kids! He does say in his book he did 4 UK personal appearances but not where he did them. https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=nVq5BAAAQBAJ&pg=PT64&lpg=PT64&dq=did+david+prowse+ever+wear+vader+suit+to+promote+star+wars&source=bl&ots=b7CZV1qaab&sig=bV2GmTQoq3F9bYdkpCPNSswQ29o&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi5qrCA29XRAhWK1BoKHbckDYEQ6AEIQDAE#v=onepage&q=did david prowse ever wear vader suit to promote star wars&f=false

I mean, if you ask me, all you have to do is look at the lines of Yoda in ESB and that alone says to me that it’s the best of all of them. There’s real-life actual wisdom to be found in ESB. Even in ANH. That’s why I agree with the numbers…except for how Clone Wars is rated. It should be higher as it’s way better than Rebels, it should at least be in the ballpark of the prequels. It’s not cringe-free but what the hell…

Also, ROTJ has that horrible music sequence which drives me nuts. It’s a foreshadowing of the cringe-worthy moments in the prequels, me thinks. Also that scene with Luke and Leia, cheesy dialogue, sold well by the actors but still…it’s very close to the ‘I don’t like sand’ kinds of scenes…

I’ve probably said this before, but I’ll say it again. ROTJ was (technically) my favorite when I was little. It was the one I remembered the most distinctly, even if I didn’t remember which movie it was, since my memories of the trilogy blurred together in my head and I oft forgot which film was which because I didn’t own them and they were usually rented out from Movie Gallery by other people.

Also, this part scared the crap out of me when I was… 4 maybe? I can’t remember how old I was.

I disagree that any scene in ROTJ is “horrible” but which music sequence are you talking about? I can think of a few.

I made that meme specially LOL

Yeah the droid torture is part of what makes Jabba’s palace such a scary place. You keep hearing people saying Droids feeling pain is nonsensical but it’s established in the other movies that they feel pain and pleasure. Star Wars ain’t hard sci-fi and never was.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

What of Ewok story time? That was pretty bad man…

I think that idea should have been used for the Holiday Special.

Nah. In the Holiday Special it wouldn’t have been Threepio telling our heroes story, featuring just the best bits… it would have been Chewbacca re-telling the story across a full 4-hours in untranslated Wookiee growls.

The scene feels like the SW equivalent of the Bard sitting round the fire telling stories of might and legend.

Totally Star Wars and not horrid in the slightest. By the way, it’s true… all of it.

Me too.

The only scenes that are actually horrible in ROTJ are some special editions scenes (Hayden, NOOO and Jedi Rock).

I’m fine with storytime but it turns to absolute lunacy once 3PO says “We are now part of the tribe”.

Ok, point taken about the Luke and Leia scene…they’re not even the same sport.

But the horrible music scene that I was talking about is the one in Jabba’s Palace. I mean some say that it’s the special edition version that’s horrible but I went back to the original and they’re both very cringe-worthy…

I mean, this is just my opinion but I’m a musician and one of the reasons I love Star Wars more than anything is because it’s set in a different Galaxy and not having anything ‘Earth-like’ is very important to me. Of course, somethings are universal, the theme of family, the theme of good vs. evil but the music sounds like it’s taken straight out of a NYC lounge of the time. I hate the fact that it sounds totally like Earth funk-pop music. in ANH, John Williams did such a great job with the Cantina band song, it was influenced by many earth folk styles but blended together in such a way that it sounds ‘alien’. It’s awesome! Compare that to this piece and I just shake my head and try to forget about it.

I guess it’s not about the whole scene, not even the special effects, just the music itself. (including the singer)

The ROTJ novelization really makes the scene worth while. After 3PO’s story, Luke pleads to the Ewoks to join the Rebels and fight against the Empire. Don’t know if this was cut from the film or not but it makes the “part of the tribe” make a bit more sense.

I need to re-read the ROTJ novelization. It’s been ages since I read it in full. I recall passages which make many of the film’s stupider aspects make sense.
