I have the Special Collector’s Series VHS, the one with the Black cover for the 75th Anniversary, and I just got done capping it this evening. It is the same as the LD version of it but I certainly like the way the VHS picture looks.

Great! 😃

Can you share some screengrabs please? I’m eager to see the results. Does it contain the black screen overture like the theatrical release? The SLV’s TV airings went straight into the opening credits.

It does contain the black screen overture … 😃

Excellent!

Out of curiosity, what gear did you use for the capturing and editing?

Question for those who have the NTSC DVD.

Are there thin black bars on the left and right side of the image for you guys?

What’s the aspect ratio of your monitor?

16:9

When I uncheck the “always fit window” option on VLC, it gets even smaller. They’re anamorphic DVDs from what I’ve read, so I’m not exactly sure why it’s doing that.

I even downloaded another VIDEO_TS off of RuTracker, and the same thing happened.

If you play it on a TV it won’t look like that.

Just streamed it through Universal Media Server onto my LG Smart TV.

There were two picture settings, original and full. With original, it was in a small black box in the middle, almost like a non-anamorphic DVD. When I put it on full, it got bigger, but still thin black bars on the left and right of the screen, just like with VLC when I turn on “always fit to window”.

Proof (picture setting on full)

Very minor as you can see, but a little annoying.

The main menu fills my 16:9 monitor perfectly, so I have a feeling it’s to do with the DVD itself.

On VLC, it’s more noticeable.

Is that just supposed to be overscan space?

That would make a whole lot of sense.

I’m assuming they were just maximizing the visible picture on older TV sets.

^I’m pretty sure that’s right. As far as I know, a lot of DVDs would have overscan space around the edge (this was back when SD CRT televisions were still what everyone used, remember), because most TVs had plenty of overscan goin’ on. Just earlier this year I watched the Jurassic Park sequels off DVDs on an HDTV and I could see some extra black on the side.

Hi guys.
Can’t believe I’ve just herd about this project.
Any chance of getting a spleen invite or link? Happy to seed forever.
Thanks

Same here…I’d love to have this version, I have the theatrical bluray, the DVD Director’s cut and the SLV on VHS, which…obviously doesn’t look good anymore…

I too have the SE on laserdisc (2 copies actually) - one is already experiencing disc rot and I am desperately trying to preserve the one that still has decent video quality. I wish with all my heart someone at Paramount would see fit to do a remaster of ALL versions of TMP - director’s cut, original theatrical, AND this SE tv version which is my favorite - all in remastered BluRay letterbox (and put it in a special release package - of all the ST TOS movies, why did TMP not get it’s just reward?) Is it even possible to do such a remaster? Naturally the LDs are pan & scan but I would never part with them. I am currently trying to at least record to a hard drive (since 142 minutes won’t go nicely on a readable DVD+RW - haven’t looked into finding something that can handle double layer 8gb DVD …).

Does ANYONE know if there is any hope of getting TMP SE on DVD - letterboxed/bluray or anything? When I found this forum, I thought there was a possibility of getting the amazing everything included fan edit but it seems there’s only 32 pages of comments and no way to get this gem.

I never liked how the interlacing turned out on this edit and I never got around to making an upgrade. My original copy has been lost to time.

If you ask me, this really needs to get an HD upgrade. Take note that the Special Longer Version is my second favorite version of the film, and the one version of the film that introduced me to the original Star Trek crew.
