ray_afraid edited his post. In his original post, he said it was getting too political in here.

It’s arguable that this is self inflicted as the guy agreed to be interviewed. Being a closet Nazi isn’t a political position or an opinion, it’s being supportive of some of the most horrible crimes committed in human history.

Where were you in '77?

I don’t know. I don’t like the idea of my boss firing me because he doesn’t like my beliefs of whatever group I belong to.

What if you boss didn’t want to keep you on his/her staff because he/she didn’t like your opinions and thought you were despicable?

Nazism isn’t just some opinions and thoughts. They are an active party who want’s to separate and kill those who aren’t like them. There is no such thing as a “friendly Nazi”.
They want people like me dead. And I take that very seriously.

Nazism is just another belief system in the same sense that cannibalism is just another dietary regimen.

I’d fire someone for either. Even if I knew I’d get sued or fined or jailed for doing it. And libertarians and vegetarians would have nothing to fear from some sort of slippery slope analogy. It’s just not comparable.

As far as I know, this guy hasn’t killed anyone or committed any acts of violence. Until he breaks some law, he has as much right to be a nazi someone does to be a member of BLM. That is the way America works.

You can absolutely be fired for your political beliefs in America – that’s how America has worked every day since its inception. Whether that’s a good or bad thing, and whether we should change the way America works so that you can’t do this, is open for discussion.

Again, being a Nazi isn’t equivalent to being a member of BLM, in the same sense that being a cannibal is not equivalent to being a vegetarian.

So the Nazi getting fired is a “Yay America!” moment now? I’m fine with that.

I do not support Nazism. I support the right to think and believe what you want. I support the 1st amendment. I support the idea of disapproving of what one has to say, but defending to the death that person’s right to say it.

So you would want the government to be able decide what opinions a boss can fire you for? You want the government to be able to decide which group affiliation bosses can fire you for?

There was a time when people would want to fire people for having any affiliation with Communism. Heck in the south, there was time when many would want to fire their employees for having anything to do with MLK or the NAACP.

You don’t have to be fired specifically for being a Nazi (or BLM). You can be fired or other reasons, like creating an uncomfortable working environment for other employees or clients/customers, or for a personality conflict. And that’s to start with. It might be shaky, depending on the individual circumstances, but an employer isn’t absolutely obligated to employ someone if they are disruptive in some way.

Do we know if Tony Hovater was disruptive in the work place?

The fact that he wasn’t fired until this story came out seems to suggest that he must have behaved himself in the workplace and kept his opinions to himself (or the workplace knew he was a nazi and had no problem with it until it became public knowledge).

Many people probably don’t want to work with a Nazi. That might have made an uncomfortable work environment.

but it does protect against the government saying you can be fired for holding x,y,z opinions but not a,b,c opinions.
