So much grain has been removed.
Do you plan on releasing a version with all the edited clips and audio, with the coloring but without the AI enhancements or DNR? : )

The coloring is using AI enhancement and some of image correction or exposure tweaks are just curve adjusted fixes, the grain removal and dust and scratches are by hand. I will not be releasing a grainy version to revert it all back, but if you are trying to match grain version like a grindhouse version or something, it would not be too difficult to apply a filter to mimic or match up with something like that (and keep the color for B/W scenes). The extended version I am working on is to match adywan level of clean print, but I do know premier and maybe final cut editing software has a match grain filter, so maybe when this is all done you could match the color/grain over to your liking.

This is incredibly impressive. Really excited for your final edits, it’ll be a great way to watch the trilogy!

Great stuff. About damn time someone released a restoration of those scenes. No offense to the OP, but I think this approach looks a lot better than the one with CGing parts of the image.

Here’s my quick attempt at restoring the Tosche Station scenes:

Very nice. Bummer about the watermark though.

It’s just a quick test - I only spent a day working on it. I need to spend a little longer to restore some of the details that were scrubbed out. When it’s done, I’ll make it available without a watermark to anyone who wants to use it.

Damn, that’s the best I’ve seen yet! You did that in a day? What’s your software and process?
I would’ve thought it would be easiest to roto Luke and the droid, make clean background plates, track them in, slap some grain on top…but I’ve never tried, so what do I know? 😆

Since I do this semi-professionally now, I have bought licenses for Viva Pro and Diamant Dustbuster+, both of which were used here, along with After Effects & Photoshop -the new Genrative Fill feature helped fill in some of the larger areas of black scratches - the ones where there are so many scratches they almost form a black rectangle that lasts for a dozen frames or more:

At least 4 hours of manual painting, cloning, etc.

Never heard of Diamant Dustbuster+ that must be the magic 😃. It looks like it had many features and tools missing from Adobe in the area of repair, which is the time consuming and challenging part. Should we be scared that they will not list a price? how much is it?

Actually Viva Pro did most of the heavy lifting.

The full Diamant Film Restoration suite starts at a little over $20k. Dustbuster+ is the cheaper, stripped down version which can be had for just under $7k.

Ouch…pricey…Looked like Viva was more of a editor from the website. I assume there are retoration plugins within not shown that beat out anything from premier and AE which isn’t much as far as full frame scratch and dust removal. If that is the case , Adobe has some catching up to do as you examples looked clean and fantastic!

I notice that the original frame has a lot of dirt and scratches, but apart from that the underlying film grain is quite fine. In the cleaned version, there seems to be a noticeable grain that has been added. Is that an inherent part of the cleaning, or has that been added later, such as to help mask film damage?

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I added the heavy grain to help hide the missing details and temporal smoothing, and so that it would blend better with 4K77 No DNR if anyone chose to integrate these sequences.

Yes I googled Viva Pro and got a tool by wondersoft that I think was ~160. So yea different tool. Nice to have someone on board that has some really nice tools. Great Job. I recently lost some data on my harddrives and would definately like to a copy of your source/finish when you are ready to share. I would probably adjust the color to match my color grade for rest of ANH, but would love to start with yours as a base…Thanks again for you work on this. Do you plan to also do ESB and ROJ deleted scenes that have some restoration needs?
