I don’t understand the whole “protection from religion” thing.

I understand it completely, but I don’t understand people (not anyone on here I’m sure) who believe that a reference to a nondescript deity on the currency is somehow an assault on the freedom from religion.

That’s fine. I don’t understand people that complain about the “war on Christmas.” Or believe that the founding fathers intended all citizens to have the right to assault weapons.

We’ve swerved into politics somehow, but our country grants us freedom of AND from religion. “In God We Trust” fails the second part of that.

Out of curiosity, is this fact, or just your personal interpretation of the constitution? The reason I ask is because I often hear people make a distinction, saying that it grants freedom of but not from religion.

I am pretty sure people have the right to be atheists and agnostics.

fixed for political correctness.

No word is inherently offensive. It is completerly up to you if you want to get offended or not. For example, I am too condescending to be able to get offended by anyone.

One that sometimes gives me pause is Spaz.
For a generation of UK people Spaz or Spastic was an incredibly offensive term of abuse based on the once common description of someone with Cerebral Palsy.
But it’s a harmless term of general clumsiness in America.
I would watch shows like Buffy which were for their time quite progressive and then they would use the term Spaz and I would feel weirdly uncomfortable.
From the same epoch was Mong (an offensive term for someone with Downs Syndrome) or Joey (Origin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_Deacon). I recently caught someone my age using Mr Deacon’s name as nostalgic term of abuse in one of his youtube videos, the bloke may have been dead since the 1980s but it still feels wrong to me.

I always think of this:

THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

My beef with referencing god on currency has nothing to do with what the first amendment does or does not say, and I don’t believe its usage is somehow an “assault on my freedom from religion.” Its simply a completely ridiculous and unnecessary thing to include on our money that flies in the face of our nation’s supposed separation of church and state.

Also, if we want to go there, “In God We Trust” does totally break the first amendment. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion…” Well in 1956 a law was signed that made “In God We Trust” the national motto (https://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/STATUTE-70/pdf/STATUTE-70-Pg732-2.pdf).

The United States is declared a Christian Nation.

EDIT: If I remember correctly, that is.

Upon a google search I’ve found this article, for:

And several articles, like this, against:

Last night at a party, I seriously heard the phrase, and this is word for word verbatim, “What kind of faggot never played Mario Party?” Though I cringe at the language, it is a fair question.

I think Bill O’Reilly, (AKA the world’s angriest newscaster) invented the war on Christmas. Surprised he hasn’t written a book entitled Killing Santa yet. 😉

Where were you in '77?

I hate Christmas so people can declare war on it all they want for all I care. By the way, a reference to an unknown god is not respecting a religion. The fact that most of the founding fathers were deists and referenced “the creator” in founding documents is a testament to that.

By the way, the second amendment does protect the use of “assault weapons” (which is a subjective term). Machine guns are already nearly impossible to buy and sell legally. People in favor of any type of weapons ban need to argue an amendment to the constitution. I don’t support the idea that the constitution is a new age “living, breathing” document, if the constitution doesn’t allow a law, then it must be amended in order to pass that law. For example, the war on drugs is unconstitutional. The federal government has no power to outlaw substances, which is why they had to amend the constitution for prohibition.

That’s probably a conversation best held in the Politics thread 😃

No it’s not. I’ve never played Mario Party and unspecific god willing, I never will.

Maybe not a specific religion but it is certainly favoring some religions over others. Whatever the founding fathers meant at the time, having a secular state was certainly the goal and “In God We Trust” being the national motto seems like an obvious contradiction to that goal.

Why can’t we go back to E pluribus unum?

You should reconsider that. It’s an extremely fun family game. You don’t have to be real into video games to like it. It’s a great family time. I remember in junior high playing it with my parents on the Nintendo 64 and neither of them plays video games but were able to play and enjoy it. Literally some of my best memories. Its a great family time.
