OT Special Editions to have USA Roadshow Summer '16 — Page 13

The screening at the Warner Theatre here in DC was originally scheduled for this past Saturday (as were at least half a dozen others across the country) but has apparently been rescheduled for this upcoming Saturday.

The only ones that actually happened on Saturday were in Los Angeles and Kansas City, and then Brooklyn was the day after.

Austin and Denver are this Saturday as well.

Maybe there were not enough DCP’s to go around?

Where were you in '77?

For anybody attending this event know that it’s the Blu-Ray editions of these films. The website says 1997 special edition, but that’s not the case.

It’s worth reiterating that - according to Tack’s report - this may be from the 4k master Reliance Media Works cooked up at some point within the last several years, not the Lowry transfer created in 1080p HD in 2004 for the dvd and reused for the blu-ray in 2011. Even the in-theater marathons this past December still used DCP’s of the outdated master and did not look so great on the big screen by most accounts.

Of course, as mentioned, the possibly new master is still the 2011 edit of the movie. This is why I couldn’t be bothered to pay the money and spend the time watching it when it was here in DC yesterday, and probably won’t when they show them at AFI Silver next month either.

seems most people who don’t know better just refer to all the special editions as “The 97 Special Edition” even if they are talking about 04 or 2011 versions.

Or maybe this? If any movie house would understand the distinction it’s Alamo.

I have no insider knowledge so this is pure speculation. But based on my experience with the Alamo drafthouse (a movie theater by movie lovers for movie lovers if ever there was one), I’d guess they knew exactly what they were saying with each revision. They often have special 35mm screenings and they always make a big deal out of it. I know they didn’t ever specify 35mm for this particular event, but I’d bet they knew what they were talking about regarding which version they were showing. My guess based on what we’ve seen is they originally had plans to show 35mm prints from 97 (and they probably had access to them already) but then Lucasfilm poo-pooed their plans and insisted that they show the latest digital version or nothing.

Lucasfilm has a long history of being like that. The Library of Congress once thought about screening their original 1977 copyright deposit print of Star Wars at their Packard Campus theater. They were well within their rights b/c legally they can publicly screen any film in their collection without any studio permission. I can’t remember if Lucasfilm made any request or if the library just made the decision on their own, but in the end they decided not to screen it b/c they knew Lucasfilm only wanted the SE shown publicly. They made this choice b/c they have a really good relationship with Lucasfilm, who has always been one of the most cooperative and helpful studios when it came to acquiring materials for the library (OOT aside…) and they did not want to break that trust or damage that relationship.

Here’s the Blu-ray:

And here’s the new image compared to the Grindhouse:

As you can see, the matte lines are gone, but it’s also a warmed-up image. I would guess that either they just adjusted the color of the 2011 Blu-ray or it’s a new scan with the elements recomposited. A third option would be that they scanned a '97 release print, which would explain the additional grain that Tack reported.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I don’t think you can really judge the color by that image. Looks like someone left the lights on.

Or it could be that Reliance was working with '97 prints to begin with?

I think Reliance used a 4K scan of the current negative, which would correspond to the 1997 SE.

Remember when the first three Indy movies were quietly remastered in '08 from new scans? I think there were even new 35mm prints struck from that new master IIRC.

This kinda reminds me of that.
