O-OT Star Wars "Bonus Disc" menus (www.starwars.com) — Page 3

I'm buying Star Wars. I don't care what it looks like.

The first set of bootlegs I bought went all digicrap mid-first viewing. The next set won't play at all on my ancient DVD/laserdisc combo player.

Neither of them would have had the facsimile of the original crawl.

I will crawl to the video store to buy Star Wars on September 12 if I have to. I don't care what it smells like, er, looks like.

So they don't allow any previews in hopes to trick people into seeing before they hear that its bad. I'm afraid that its a similar thing going on here. Lucas knows that the quality is substandard, so he won't allow anyone to see screenshots or clips it before the release, to keep people wanting them. Then he has the fallback of "its bonus material" when people complain.
I don't believe it was a real review.

1. It was inaccessible at the posted url.
2. You cannot prevent reviewers from making screenshots - that is protected under the news and documentaries clauses (which are embedded into the basic copyright laws that all countries respecting copyrights observe).

PS: I give the 2004 version a 4.0/10 for picture quality. Yes it is crisp and sharp, but the grain removal and wrong colouring gets to me. I give Terminator 1 a 9/10 for picture quality - and I would give it 10 if the film scratches (which are evident all the way through the movie) weren't there... but hen again they don't bother me.

I agree with the 4/10 video rating for '04. Resolution is only one factor of picture quality. I thought it was strange that the audio was rated so good, then I remembered the force fanfare is not missing on the French language track.

That's true- it might be a fake. I never even thought of that. I somehow doubt that they're giving out review copies of this, since it's of previously released DVD material (the 2004 discs) and I doubt LFL wants the 'bonus material' reviewed.

For example, what did it cost to create the anamorphic dvd of Bad News Bears 2? (a 1977 film, with a new transfer, that you can buy for 5 bucks)

Someone please answer this man....because I wanna know too from you people before I go see something wrong on google....maybe.

Personally, I'm waiting for that super-duper no-frills extra-massive saga box set that's supposed to be due out within the next couple of years for the 30th Anniversary. These are merely a stopgap to pacify the hardcore fans. I say no dice.

Also today... a follow-up on something we've been telling you to expect for quite while now. 2007, as you may well be aware, is the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars' debut in theaters. You'd have to be stupid not to know that Lucasfilm is going to have big DVD release plans with which to celebrate the anniversary, and we've been telling you that was the case for many months now. Indeed, during our last visit to the Ranch for the DVD release of Episode III, producer Rick McCallum confirmed that a box set of all six films was going to happen eventually, and animation director Rob Coleman even let it slip that the puppet Yoda from Episode I had already been replaced with a new CG Yoda to match Episodes II & III for the "future" release. T-Bone over at Star Wars Universe recently speculated about this box set, and we've been quietly checking in with our industry sources on it as well. Well, we've confirmed it: There IS a big, ultimate, 6-film Star Wars anniversary DVD box set planned for 2007. There will be more changes to the films, and there will be LOTS of new, never-before-seen special features - all the good stuff that was held back by Lucasfilm from the original Trilogy DVD release a few years ago. Think deleted scenes and more. We don't know if good, genuinely-REMASTERED versions of the original theatrical editions of the films will be included or not (though how you could call the set "ultimate" without them, we don't know). We don't expect high-definition versions yet, as those formats are just too new. We don't have ANY other details for you yet, so please don't ask. But as you consider whether or not to purchase the "limited edition" DVDs due on 9/12... we thought you should know that more IS absolutely on the way next year. 'Nuff said for now.

As always, please keep in mind that titles discussed here are tentative and are subject to change until officially announced by the studios.

Also, the review of DVDRama is of course legitimate, they are not used to publish fake reviews...

I'm undecided. If it looks like something I could live with, but still mumble and grumble a little, then fine. But I will not buy them if they truley do suck.

I won't suck as much as a fan edit.

A fan edit is a completely different thing. In any case, this is in essence the same as the bootlegs that have circulated for years, but it is made by a multi-billion dollar company and they expect us to pay full price for it.

Not by much, and nowhere near what it should be.

Amen.

LOL! "You want this....don't you?"

Seriously those menus are facking awesome, I might just buy these when they go on discount at Tower Records, but arg I don't want them at the same time cuz I'm holding out for the Saga set. *Sighs*

What if the saga set doesn't contain the OOT, which it looks like it probably won't?

Are you sure about France. If they mad an agreement with Lucas for the privilege of previewing the DVDs, why couldn't that be a contractual stipulation. The DVDs haven't been officially released, right? So, it's not like the French website could have goten their hands on copies without Lucas' help, right?

Yes, I did eventually see the review, sorry for not replying again sooner. I'm still not convinced though, and besides from the screenshots that have been posted the quality is looking good.

If LFL sends them review discs, they're under no obligation as to what to do with them. They can use them as frisbees if they want, draw on them, send them back, write a review, don't write a review... whatever they want. The one thing they can't do is sell them, hire them, show them in public... And they probably can't comment on the packaging either, unless this was sent to them (which generally it isn't, but occasionally they send retail packaging to the reviewer too).

Maybe they did tell them not to make screenshots, but I doubt they could have had them leally obligated to follow that "direction". It's a mute point now anyway, since we can see screen caps!

Pffts, menus! I dream of having a DVD player that will skip EVERYTHING and go right to the feature, so I can have an experience akin to the movies - - which is what I am trying to emulate when I watch a MOVIE.

My Zenith DVD player has a feature called "Auto Play" which does just that. It's not very good for TV shows on DVD, but if you just want to watch a movie, pop in the disc and it plays. Very nice feature.

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

No problem about the reply. Not that site spoofing hasn't been done in the past, but since the site seems to be a legitimate source of entertainment news in French, and since the negative review of the DVDs follows the fears that have flowed from Lucasfilm's own admissions of the source of the OUT, I don't see much reason to believe that this was a hack.

I know that international copyright is covered by that InterPol agreement from the 1970s, but I'm not sure that press rights are the same across international borders. And if they're not (which is almost certain; case in point: Communist China), who's to say Lucasfilm can't have them sign a contract on what will and will not be allowed with the review?

Yes, but not all countries guarantee freedom of speech or of the press. Even if a country does, it may not define those freedoms the same way that the U.S.A. does.

I'm surprised they aren't using Dr. Gonzo's menus. For that matter, his transfer.

A few of the Empire menus have surfaced now ~ man, they really are pushing these discs. Will LFL use the revenue generated from sales of these discs to do a proper transfer for a future release? It's a fools hope... Still, i personally love how they're animating the menus in the style of the original poster designs. Haven't decided if that's gonna be enough to force my hand, so to speak.

You are a bit naive if you don't think this kind of thing can and does go on. Ever hear of an NDA? (Non-disclosure agreement)
