Revolution Controller SERIOUSLY REVEALED! NO JOKE!

Yeah. That's it. For real this time. But it's not just a TV remote. It has the abiltiy to sense motion and distance from the console in all three dimensions, and a light-gun esque sensor that lets it point and click like a mouse... Which will make First Person Shooters REALLY simple to control...

Other than that, I have really mixed feeligns about this. It could turn out some great games, but I have a bad feeling that this thing will make third party developers run, run fast as they can to the XB360 and PS3. And if THAT happens, Nintendo is screwed no matter how great their games are.

Well. What are your all's thoughts?

shit.

The xbox 360 has the only sensible controller this time 'round.

At least the rev can take a GC controller.

It had me worried, until I looked at the article and the pics there... definitely thinking outside the box. Still not sure if I like it, though.

I can't wait.

The first LucasArts game on this system should be pretty interesting, especially once you pick up a lightsaber.

Of course you'll look like an idiot to your neighbours!

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.

I think XBox is the new king of the hill, however I don't think Nintendo's going away in the near future. They've got a LOCK on the younger kids (like 8-14, or something) and a lot of parents who grew up on it are making a return. I bought a GC a few months ago. Plus now the GBA Micro that they just introduced can hopefully make up for the DS debacle, although I think currently it's only available in Japan. They're offering huge chunk of their gaming library from the last 20 years with it, so that'll be enough for me to pick it up when it comes out.

Why do you think developers will abandon the platform?

Oh man, this is such a terrible design.

1) It's basically making it so the entire console is ONLY for DUCK HUNT kind of games. I guess that's fun for people who enjoy flailing their hands around for hours at a time, pointing and clicking, but personally I don't think it will be that great!!

2) To be able to play most games, you're going to need to buy ATTACHMENTS! This means, after you spend the 30 to 50 dollars for your game, you're going to have to spend another 20 to 40 dollars just to be able to play it right!

3) There is just NO WAY they can get this thing to work for RPGs... I mean, I just don't see how it will work at all. It might work well for FPS, but RPGs are out of the question. And RPGs are my favorite genre.

4) Who could hold that thing for more than an hour? Seriously. Go into your living room or where ever you have your TV, pick up your remote control, and start pointing it at the TV and move you arms around a bit and click on some buttons. I imagine all games released for the Revolution will be fun for about an hour. Then you'll just get bored and/or tired and turn it off. Seriously, it gets tiring holding your hand out in front of you for that long!

5) This could have been a very smart idea for an add-on. Like an accessory or something. A cool little device used to play certain kinds of games. But it was a bad idea to use it as the MAIN CONTROLLER. Seriously. I don't know what they were thinking. It'd be like if Sony decided to make the EyeToy the main controller for the PS3!

6) third party games are not going to port well AT ALL! Games like Splinter Cell or Prince of Persia, where you need like 10 buttons to be able to do things. And fighting games aren't going to work very well either, because you need to push like several buttons to make combos and stuff. Imagine playing SSBM with that controller. It wouldn't work. It just wouldn't. Of course, the way they'll probably try to solve this problem is by, again, making ATTACHMENTS! Which will then cost extra money! So, you could either buy a different system that also has the third party games, without having to blow an extra $20-$40, or waste loads of money with the Revolution everytime you want to play some third party game! Or maybe they just wont port games at all... That would be a horrible idea, and I doubt they're that stupid... but after this controller design, I wouldn't be surprised.

I know that I can't FULLY judge the controller until I've actually played with it, but so far it's had an awful first impression on me. Seriously... I hope that there's more to it. I hope that there's something they're not telling us, because it really looks and sounds that bad. What's weird is that I kind of liked the controller, until I started reading articles and watching video clips. The more I learned about it, the more I thought "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!"

For some reason I do belive there's more into it that what is shown. This picture here shows a different controller at the bottom of the screen. I belive this is just one of the possible options for playing with it. By the way, for those who didn't read the article, this controller has some sort of a gyroscope, so you can use it as a virtual sword or fishing rod...

After sleeping on it, my thoughts closely mirror Sessler's.

Like I said, my biggest worry is third party support. It also seems that this console will make peoples right arms tireder than all get out. Other devices and such can be plugged into the "remote" part, which means that an there could be a more standardized controller issued later. And it has four Gamecube controller ports, which, hopefully, can be used to control Revoution games as well.

On the otherhand, the X-Box 360 seems to be just X-Box with prettier graphics and a ridiculous price point. So I will mostl likely have the PS3 as my first next gen console..

As for the DS, JediSage, I disagree that it was a debacle. It is outselling the PSP, and it has some great games out now, and on their way. Advance Wars DS, Nintendogs, Meteos, Kirby's Canvas Curse, Final Fantasy 3, Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing Online, Viewtiful Joe DS, and Castlevania Dawn of Sorrows, among others.

So... Revolution's fate and profitability remain to be seen. I really don't know if I should like this controller or hate it..

(For the record, the Joystick attatcment comes with the system and has two trigger buttons on the back end.)

doesnt seem very ergonamic (sp?) i mean you'll basically have to hit every button with just your one finger (thumb) and i dont know if they are all reachable without readjusting your hand.

but the n64 controllers seemed like they would be awkward at first, but were quite comfortable/easy to use

After thinking about it for a while and seeing some demonstration videos, as the one in the url I posted (as to opposed of doing some actual work ), here's what I feel: if this has been part of a controller, or a different, secundary controller, that would be absolutely brilliant. I mean, a controller that allows you to spin it, throw it, move it around, it's quite ingenious, and should be VERY fun for SOME games, lemme repeat that, SOME games. Now, being the OFFICIAL controller isn't very good, because that limits the kind of game for the revolution - what, will every game be wither a WarioWare or Mario Party game? Reminds me of the New Coke fiasco, with Coca Cola replacing Coke instead of creating a secondary, different flavor...

Now, I DO belive Nintendo WILL release a different, "normal" controller for it... Or else we'll see the hugest flop in the videogame industry...

Just updating what I've said: this controller WILL be attachable to a "classic" controller called the "Freehand". Got that from a local forum. Gotta see more of that though.

First off, I'm stunned. This is nothing like what I felt the controller would be.

I thought the controller would be essentially a GC controller, but instead of buttons, it would have a series of touch screens. Buttons would be software driven, so that the button you need would be what is displayed on the controller.
This would play well into the idea of them offering up their entire library of games for download. Want to play an NES game? Your controller gets a D-pad, Start, Select, A and A buttons.

Second, I think they have done exactly what they promised. This is such a radical departure from anything that ANYONE has done before. The closest I can think of, is Kirby Tilt-N-Tumble for Gameboy Color.

Third, I won't know what I think until I experience using it myself. My early impressions are that, as they said they would, Nintendo has taken games to a new plane. Fishing in Zelda: OoT was fun, but it wasn't quite realistic. This makes it more interactive.

My first thought too was that it looked like an NES controller turned on its side. I find myself feeling very strange over this. To be honest, what I called Nintendo's gimmicks (such as the DS) had done little to impress me. They all seemed like one trick ponies to me. And I am totally against online gaming, which is supposed to be the best thing to happen to home video game consoles. And none of the next-gen consoles have really done anything to make me say, "I have to have that!" I don't know, though. I felt a sort of twinge of excitement reading this. It's hard to explain why, especially when I'm such a traditionalist, but I think it could work. It seems pretty multi-purpose. I am wondering how more traditional games will play. I guess we'll just have to see how things play out.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Were you aware that Nintendo is talking about opening up its entire game library? They want to make their games available to download to the Revolution...for a price.

Metroid on Revolution.
Super Mario Bros 3 on Revolution.

Someone either here or at IGN mentioned Punch Out using 2 of these controllers.

Truth is, it'll either be a huge hit, being the #1 console of this new generation coming out, OR... it'll be Nintendo biggest flop, bigger than Virtual Boy, that will destroy Nintendo... I say it's 50/50.

Here's something. Nintendo has apparently confimed a "Controller Shell" that lets you plug the Remote into a traditional controller. It will probably cost extra, though. Either way, this more than solves the problem of third parties porting their games to the Rev.

Please not that this pic isn't offical, but a hypothetical mock-up made by IGN.com.

Now, I've read that the "normal" controller, which would be used with the "remote controll" thing WOULD come out with the revolution. If so, that would save the console... I mean, how could they NOT antecipate such a need?

Indeed, hopefully the big N won't take third place in the next Console War, its time for them to make a comeback and show the gaming industry exactly who saved it back in '86.
