"Now...what shall we talk about?" The All-Inclusive Indiana Jones Thread

Author
Time

We have a number of threads on Indy fanedits or on ranking the Indy films, but nothing to discuss the franchise in a broader sense. This thread will serve that purpose. I’ve been watching the movies in my spare time (meaning, while doing homework, I steal glances at the TV while my wife watches). This is definitely one of my favorite franchises, and I thoroughly enjoy the first three, even in spite of the missteps of The Temple of Doom.

Hopefully, we can generate some fun discussion here.

Great thread, and good idea! I’ll start!

So Indy 5 is official. I truly do not enjoy Crystal Skull very much, even in fan edited form. I feel there were a number of good ingredients, Lucas-esque prequalisms infiltrated this movie too much and it really suffers. I’m hoping 5 will be a redemption and return to form.

So what should it be about? I have two ideas:

  1. Since Raiders is about a Hebrew/Jewish relic and Crusade is about a Christian relic, I thought it might be interesting to utilize a relic from the other major Abrahamic faith: Islam. West End Games once used the Black Stone for one of their scenarios, and I think it’s a worthwhile idea.

Of course, due to political sensitivities, I see this as unlikely

  1. Since the Jones movies take place during certain periods and highlight the interests of the times (religion in the 30s-'40s, science fiction in the '50s), it might be fun to see a '60s spy thriller type of Indiana Jones movie. Bond movies played some inspiration on the franchise, and it could be interesting to see the elderly Jones character, now not so physically spry, using gadgets to accomplish his missions.

Honestly, this sounds really fun, or really terrible. I’m actually on the fence about this idea.

What would you like to see in Indy 5?

I don’t know who approved this thread but it was a terrible idea.

I actually don’t mind Crystal Skull in fanedit form. There’s a lot to enjoy in there.

If we’re in the mood to look upon Crystal Skull with a more forgiving eye…

I hope that they find a way to use the character of Mutt going forward in a way that doesn’t make his inclusion in Crystal Skull an absolute waste. I know Shia has undergone a strange career reinvention of sorts, so maybe he’ll be open to do a more modern take on the ‘adventurer archaeologist’ who has to deal with the constant derision of people ‘debunking’ the tales of his adventures among aliens and ancient nuclear-powered Hindu civilizations.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I think they already confirmed that Shia will not be involved. And while on the subject, I don’t think Crystal Skull’s all that bad, just a bit dull and clunky.

Bring back Short Round! Would be nice to see him grown up and following in Indy’s footsteps.

Which edit do you find most worthwhile? I don’t remember which I’ve seen, but maybe the right one will change my mind.

Here’s the ones I’m aware of.

I like Q2’s because it has a light touch. Sounds like you might want something more, however. So I’d suggest njvc’s.

You can see the cutlist on the Changes tab, but what I really enjoyed was the music changes.

1-Film Score: The large majority of the score has been completely replaced with the score from Raiders of the Lost Ark. This was a painstaking process, matching each musical beat to this new edit of KOTCS. The intention was to improve the tone, and evoke the old feeling of Raiders through that classic music. As a result of these changes, many sound effects also had to be replaced to allow the new music to be integrated naturally into the film

The only other one I’ve seen was Jorge’s, which had a few odd choices I didn’t really like.

I would like to see no Indy 5. I think Indy should be allowed to rest in peace.

Indy 5 is 100% confirmed.

I don’t completely hate Crystal Skull, but it’s clearly the weakest of the franchise. Haven’t checked out any fanedits of that one yet, though.

I also have to say that I really love Temple of Doom and I’m more or less ambivalent on Last Crusade, bar the last 30 minutes or so which are fantastic. The rest is watchable because of Connery and Ford.

Raiders is, of course, a perfect movie. Which makes it part of a very small group.

I probably shouldn’t paint with too broad a brush, as it looks like I’ve downloaded four versions, but I think I’ve only given Q2’s a chance. It was a few years ago, so I should give something else a go. I like Q2 as an editor, but I still didn’t like the source material. I think I’ll try njvc’s. It’ll be a couple days before I have the chance, but thanks for the recommendation.

I agree with your last paragraph very much!

I’m definitely in the “Crystal Skull is actually kinda fun camp.” The rest are great, obviously. I have high hopes for 5.

I actually love Temple of Doom the most, and I definitely find myself re-watching that one the most.

Temple was my favorite when I was little, but over time I’ve come to realize that *Raiders is a perfect movie, and Ford/Connery is better than anything in Temple, but I still have a lot of appreciation for it.

What I was dying for in the fourth film.

I think both Raiders and Temple are those rare things in being perfect films. What most people seem to react against Temple for is the fact that it is even MORE of a 1930’s adventure than Raiders. What makes it special however, is by trying so hard to be the opposite of the first film it manages to find its own place and truly work in its own right. And this is even when the story is clearly inspired lock, stock and barrel from Gunga Din.

Beginning with Last Crusade I think Lucas lost interest as he seemingly didn’t even like the story elements he was coming up with. Outside of the built up father-son relationship and some great moments of iconic scenes TLC really suffers from being both by the numbers and derivative of the series. It was as if they decided top consciously do the opposite of Temple and revisit many of the same elements as Raiders.

Kingdom was unforgivably bad to me. I had hoped they would leave it at that but I really have no desire in anything 5 related.

That said I did recently play Lego Indy and that got me excited again so I think I’m going to dive into more of the novels. I’ve read the novelizations and a book or two which were far better in tone and story than the films had gotten.

I liked Fate of Atlantis but the age and style of the game make it cumbersome these days. The later games are all pretty damn bad and have lackluster stories. Infernal Machine was infernally frustrating on the n64 (that. damn. jeep.) , and Emperor’s Tomb was almost as bad. Staff of Kings is really not worth it, but if it ever comes across the cheap bins I may give it a go. Uncharted is okay, but it doesn’t fill that fedora sized hole in gaming. Why they can’t just give in and let someone really make an amazing game? Why not go nuts and have Rockstar or Rocksteady do it?

I too like the idea of bringing Short Round back, but does Jonathan Ke Quan even act anymore? I suppose they could always recast. Might be interesting to go back to Asia, either way, although not sure if it’s a good idea to touch Vietnam or not.

Otherwise, given the timeframe, I could see something involving Berlin or Germany in general. I’ve been saying for awhile it might be fun to do a bit of Nazi zombies but I don’t know if they’ll want to reign it in after the alien backlash.

The one thing that blows my mind is that it will have been 12 years since KOTCS. That’s only 7 less years than the gap between that and TLC. It’s a real shame they didn’t make at least one in the 90s. That way it wouldn’t quite feel like there’s so much time we’ve missed (and we’d get to see Indy in the 40s).

I’m sorry but any movie that features Kate Capshaw whining and screaming for 90-ish minutes cannot ever be considered perfect, no matter how good the rest of it might be.

Batman 89 suffers the same flaw (minus the whining and Kate Capshaw and plus the Kim Basinger).
