No sh*zn*t, Sherlock!

I do not want to give any impression that I am a Sherlock Holmes expert. However, I feel like I want to delve more into the origins of the series. So far, my greatest exposure has been three of the most prominent/recent iterations, though I know there are others, both recent and historical.

The Robert Downy, Jr. movies
The British series Sherlock
The American series Elementary

I truly enjoyed the RDJ versions, but when I watched Sherlock, I feel it blew the movies away completely. Elementary has its own unique twists and makes Sherlock more of a likable individual, but his deductive powers aren’t displayed as impressively (which could either add to or take away from the character, depending on how you look at it).

I guess I just felt we needed a thread to discuss Sherlock Holmes and our favorite incarnations. Perhaps we could share some recommendations.

Rupert Everett and Ian Hart were perfect as Holmes and Watson (respectively). Shame they only did one together and this was a new story which makes it extra fun. The cast also boasts Helen McCrory (from 'Peaky Blinders) and a certain Mr Michael Fassbender (before his movie career).

Series 1 and 2 of Sherlock are excellent.

Series 3 and 4 feel like shitty fanfiction sequels.

I’m not a fan of what Sherlock did to Moriarty, but I think that’s one of my main criticisms to Series 1 & 2.

3 deserves a little bit more of criticism, but I still enjoyed two out of three of the episodes. Even liked the third one, but less so than the first two.

Series 4 is a fanfic sequel, like Master Fry said above.

this is true also

JEDIT, but i blame the problems of everything after Series 2 on increasing time between series, and the extreme complication that Moffat tried to put into every single plot. Its like he became obsessed with making every single plot more clever than the last, and the Series suffered because of it.

I agree with your reviews of the three series.

As a child, my family often watched this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes_(1984_TV_series) and i consider that my benchmark for what Sherlock should be.

It unfortunately switched to different creative personnel in the later seasons and really suffered for it by making way too many changes to source material in the adaptations, but God, those early years really are wonderful. For a lot of people, that’s very understandably the definite take on Holmes. Brett is magnificent, and Hardwicke and Burke were both a great Watson.

I think the biggest negative factor in the later episodes was Brett’s health, which was seriously failing. The early years were astonishingly good, though. It’s hard to imagine a better interpretation of Holmes.

So nobody else is into the '39 series with Basil Rathbone?

sadly not I. I did see one or two of those eps, with the classic deerstalker hat. but all i remember (i was a child) was that i didn’t like it as much as the 84 with Jeremy Brett.

Man, I was really hoping this thread would turn into a Sledge Hammer! thread since I don’t watch this show or series of shows or movies or whatever this is actually about.
