First "pre-alpha" version of VideoLAN Movie Creator released 10 April 2010. Download/test it here:

I was just reading about this today.

Seeing as most of the time I'm using a Mac these days and to test it out I'd have to fiddle around with the source code on Miss Sakamoto's Linux laptop, I'll wait for a later ready to wear version but it's always nice to have another bit of freeware for people to experiment with and VideoLan for a long time has led the way in terms of free players (players generally...VLC still beats most of the officially installed media programs on most platforms though Totem is starting to catch up with it) so I'm interested to see where this goes.

Crikey that was a long sentence.
