And then they did something weird in BTTF II.

"2015 Biff" steals the car, and takes the book to 1955....changes the timeline....and then returns to the original 2015.

...

If Doc and Marty couldn't go back to the original 2015 to stop Biff from stealing the book, how come Biff could return himself to 2015?

The ripple effect transformed 2015 around the time travellers. Keep in mind we only see 2015-A for a few scant minutes. It's after Doc retrieves Jennifer after seeing herself and, the main thing we see is the outside of the houses. In 1985-A it took Marty actually entering his house to realize things had changed. It stands to reason that they wouldn't notice subtle changes to the exterior of houses in 2015-A. It's established in Pt. III that the timeline does change around the time travellers. So, if they went to 2015-A all they'd be able to see is Biff returning. They'd never witness his intial theft of the delorean.

The ripple effect is a good plot device.  But back when I used to post on bttf.com's message board, one theory always bugged me.  Everyone always said that when Marty cries over Doc at the end of the first film (after he arrived too late to stop him from being shot) that Doc actually was dead at that point.  It was only when he blinked that the ripple effect caught up to him, and the bullet proof vest magically appeared on him.

WHAAAAA?!

That doesn't make any sense, and it has nothing to do with the ripple effect as portrayed in the movies!  In all other instances, rippling only occurs to things that are already out of their proper place in time.  The matchbook from 1985-A that Marty took with him to 1955 ripples to the matchbook from the good 1985.  The ripple effect occurs to people and objects that exist separately from the timeline, changing objects, preserving (or occasionally obfuscating) memories of time travelers, etc.

Doc's bulletproof vest has nothing to do with that!  While Marty (and the audience) skipped to the future instantly, the timeline had 30 years of naturally-occurring time to realign itself, wherein actual events occurred.  Doc read the letter, bought a bullet-proof vest, put it on, pretended to die.  It didn't need to catch up with Marty.  Marty was catching up with it!  Where is the logic in this new timeline magically transforming Doc's corpse into a living Doc?!

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

The nipple effect?  Look, I know that porn is a visual medium, but women that have...

...oh.

I read somewhere that the script originally had Biff "fading away" after returning to 2015. This was scrapped, as they thought that the audience may wonder why the car didn't fade away as well.

This plot hole has always bugged me, and affected my enjoyment of BTTF 2. I guess I must have an autistic streak.

Another bit of bad science I've just remembered is in "Lord of the Flies", something I actually commented on in my English lesson back when we read the book at school. If Piggy was short-sighted, his glasses would have concave lenses, and thus been useless for creating fire. William Golding, You Fail Physics Forever.

That scene was filmed and is in one of the 'making of' docs!!!

BTTF 2 may of had plot holes, but not as many as BTTF 3......
