Looking forward to seeing this set. You said that you've synced this to a stereo mix. Do you have the 5.1 mix from the LD?

I should be receiving the 5.1 tracks for all 3 films within the next week or so, hopefully it shouldn't take too long to sync them up to the existing stereo tracks and there should be enough space to fit both tracks on the final DVDs (but if not I will obviously sacrifice the stereo track)

I don't think I have any further news at the moment, I've been a bit distracted by another project.

Sad to here that you've been a bit distracted by another project. I really, want to see the final result!

Keep up the good work!

OK small update.

Adywan has kindly supplied me with 5.1 rips from the laserdiscs so I have begun the process of syncing those up to the existing stereo tracks, although progress is slow at the moment.

Russs15 has supplied me with both the 'Flunk' and the 'Reivax' versions of ANH, and from initial impressions the flunk is far superior to all the other sources although it does suffer from a few section with corrupt frames, again the GKAR version has more frames than any of the other versions so it looks like ANH will mainly be taken from the Flunk with a few frames of GKAR thrown in here and there.

Also I'm working on a colour correction pluggin for avisynth because I'm not really happy with the options currently available, but first I need to learn C++ so I'm probably at least a week away from having anything useful.

I'll post a few comparison pictures from ANH soon.

Me neither. This and the "V8" project are the two sets I'm looking forward to the most.

I am just pleased you got either of the Flunk DVD's to play. None of my computers or players would read the things fully - not even the player that wrote the discs!!!

Would you believe it ripped on the first attempt? I was fully prepared to go and dig out some of my spare dvd drives but I just didn't need to!

This is a project that had to be done by somebody. The 97 SE’s in anamorphic and surround and unbotched colors, in good quality.

Thank you for doing it. Really looking forward to it:)

i had the Flunk release sent to me ages ago but it became unplayable too. it turned out to be the media. It was a RITEK disc. this make (depending on what dye was used) has a very short lifespan. I have loads of discs that are now unplayable because the dye degraded. its a very common problem with RITEK dye discs. i just wish i had known this when someone suggested i use this type originally and now have so many that are lost because of this problem. thats why i always use Taiyo Yuden for DVD-5's and Singapore made Verbatim for DVD-9's now.

good luck with your project. can't wait to hear the 5.1 laserdisc tracks synced to these video sources.

This project sounds great! :) Hope it goes smoothly for you the rest of the way.

I have a question: will you be including the various promos/commercials that were included with these? My favorite was that one that showed the tiny television and said something like "for years, the only way you could experience Star Wars was on a TV screen." That one still gives me goosebumps when the fanfare hits! To have those included would be gravy on the icing.

You're sure it's the 1997 version?  I would have assumed it to be the 2004 version ... interesting ... well, why the hell isn't there a DVD of that making the rounds?

I haven't really started thinking about bonus material yet, I will deffinitely include the 'making of' documentaries that were on the VHS release, I may include trailers if I can find good quality copies.

as for the '97 SE in HD, I have never seen anyone claim to have a copy or to have seen it broadcast, the only place I have ever seen it mentioned is in that thread and I think that was just a mistake by Skot, I would love it to be true but I think the best sources available are the anamorphic PAL broadcasts, and fortunately I have all of those.

I swear that trailer for the SE was on the 2004 bonus disc. I love it too:p

Also, if your going to include the making of's from the vhs there is a far better version of those included in the big limited edition SE set, the  one with poster prints and a medalion  of some sort.  Included is a  documentary called "the making of the star wars trilogy special edition" or something, and it consists of all 3 making of's from the vhs's edited together with more footage to create a documentary. Something else that would be interesting to have would be highest quality possible versions of the "Anatomy of a Dewback" web docs from starwars.com.

Some trailers were on the SE laserdisc set, along with a making of special.  Babyhum also has put out some SE-specific stuff that might also be of interest.  OCPmovie did another disc of Special Edition specials a while back as well.  There should be plenty of sources for a bonus disc or two for this set.

Looking forward to this set.  Good luck!

I think I have a copy of the longer 'making of' on a disc somewhere, good idea about 'Anatomy of a Dewback' I think it's still available on the star wras site so I may well include it.

Thanks for the tips, I'll take a look and see what good stuff I can find.

Here are the images I promised from the 4 version of ANH:

I find Chewie is always a good indicator of the quality of a source, as you can see the Flunk just has the edge on quality, and the other three are fairly similar

Below you can see an odd problem  the two versions that have non-english crawls and hard subs also have less dirt on them, however I still believe all of these are based on the same master (due to framing and dirt marks) but there are a few differences, i.e. the Flunk is slightly wider than the others, the GKAR has clearly gone through a dirt removal process at some points which has removed some sparks and other details, the Reivax is missing some dirt that is present in all the others. etc. etc. on top of that they all suffer from Macro-blocking to different degrees and at different times.

So all in all it looks like ANH is going to be more complicated than I thought and it will probably be a matter of deciding which source is best on a scene by scene basis. Should be fun!

The Star Wars SE trailer (the “on the TV screen” trailer) is on the 2004 DVD bonus disc, but the SE trailers for Empire and Jedi – both of which are on the VHS tapes of the respective film – were not, which was disappointing because like the “TV screen” one, they were great! The Empire one ended with the tagline “you haven’t seen anything… till you’ve seen everything!” and Jedi had the tagline “feel the Force… like never before!” All three were really well done, and are really the only reason I keep my 1997 VHS tapes. :)

Incidentally, for completionists’ sake, as I recall there is an alteration in that SW SE trailer – originally the narrator said “this President’s day weekend,” but when the release date was moved up it was changed to “this January.” I believe the “January” one is on the VHS and “President’s day” is on the DVD (although I may have those reversed.)
