Oh good for a second I was a bit concerned. While a nice gesture, if making a preservation for the original unaltered trilogy, it's not wise to then yourself alter it by adding a special thank you.

If he is doing 720P versions its great that someone is offering the originals and the Old documentaries since the Blu Ray is going to be the 2004 video.

So far, he's only done ESB in 720p. Although, he says that if it gets a positive response he'll do ANH and ROTJ, which may be harder since their GOUT versions don't appear to look as good. Although, his preservation is one worthy of remembrance.

My faces laserdiscs pressed in japan have neither the sharpness or the saturation of the gout even if they came from the same master.  The  softness in the picture makes the DVNR smear on especially very grainy scenes less horrible.

I still wonder if they added sharpening to the DVD's, Star Wars looks horrible and unwatchable on the gout DVD.  While the laserdisc is certainly passable for 1995.

My Japan "Faces" is this way as well.  The U.S. version is much clearer...which set was pressed first?

My set is the US versions but pressed in Japan so no laser rot.

I do have the Japan Definitive collection which also has no rot.

My fixed USA version which came from a sealed copy is so rotten as to almost be unplayable, drop outs in the picture and audio.

Pressed in the USA.

My special widescreen pre THX USA version was also pressed in Japan and no sign of rot.

Both Copies i have of the CAV pan and scan star wars from 1985 pressed in a Michigan factory are rotten. Just for example as to how some USA factories had bad discs.

It is not as if no Japan laserdiscs can be rotters there are some notorious ones, but overall they had cleaner factories and less chance of this problem.

I'll post some screen caps for SW & Jedi tomorrow...it's late here and I've got a few things to do come sun up.

Cheers

Relax. You've earned it with all your screen shots and your review of the set.

Thanks for starting this thread, Aluminum Falcon.  And thanks for the review and screengrabs, Jetrell Fo.  I kept meaning to start a topic over here on OriginalTrilogy when I completed this project in late '10 (which was done under a different user handle), but it completely slipped my mind :)

Empire Strikes Back looks quite nice.  Did you clean up the source in any way beyond the bonus DVD ?

Hey OmegaMattman, thank you for making this set. It's quite interesting, especially with all the features and audio tracks. I look forward to downloading it soon.

By the way, what do you want the thread title to be:

Mattmanalpha's Rebellion Collection and 720p AVCHD of ESB: Theatrical Version

or

OmegaMattman's Rebellion Collection and 720p AVCHD of ESB: Theatrical Version?

I guess "MattmanOmega's" might be the most appropriate, since that was the handle I used on the credits section.  Thanks for asking.

Thanks.  I did what cleaning and tweaking I could, partially based on scripts I'd seen by G-force and Moth3r.  Some of it was done in AviSynth and some was done through filters in VirtualDub.

But, to be perfectly I honest, I wish I would have given myself more time.  I put together the DVD collection with the goal of having it ready for Christmas (for those friends I would never spend actual money on).  Since then, I've found a lot of things I would have done differently...some of which wound up in my first AVCHD of Empire.

Title has now been changed.

Are you thinking of having another go at the set after the AVCHDs are done since you have new techniques?

Thanks for changing the title :)

I started fresh late last week with work for the original film on AVCHD, so I'll go ahead and redo the 720p Empire while I'm at it.  If those turn out well (or as well as can be expect with GOUT), I'd definitely like to redo the DVDs with similar scripts.

Although, future DVDs will probably ditch the 5.1 upmix.  It hasn't impressed my sound system as much as I'd hoped ;)

I'll try to post a few screengrabs of the new Star Wars within the next few days to see what everyone thinks.

Hey Matt, if you're looking for a better 5.1 upmix, a forum member named Hairy Hen made a bunch of them. They sound fantastic. Here's the thread that talks about them. He made a reconstruction of the 70mm soundtrack of ANH and a reconstruction of the other movies' soundtracks. They all are ready to sync to the GOUT so that should make your job easier. ;-)

I do want mention, yet again, that the artwork for these is very frickin cool.

Would it be possible to post some pics/links of the artwork? You've piqued my interest :)

Okay, just wanted to let everyone know my AVCHD project is still going relatively smoothly.  I've finished my 720p AVI master for Star Wars and will post some screenshots sometime tomorrow.

Right off, I can say the results are more grain-heavy, but softer than what I've seen of dark_jedi's V3/BluGOUT.  The decrease in sharpness, I believe, has to do with my increased anti-aliasing.  Unfortunately, the aliasing is still there...though it's a tad more subdued.

Also, I may move this project to a new thread.  I want to separate these 720p versions from my "Rebellion Collection".  For the moment, I'm leaning toward the "Hyperspace Collection", unless that title has already been taken by another project.

Here's an early, rough look at the intended (front) cover-artwork.  The picture is Frank Stockton's "Luke's Destiny" print.

Wow, that's a cool picture, I want to steal it for my project :-D

Also, I'm glad to hear you're making good progress. I really liked your Empire, so if the others are as good as that, that would be great :-)

Here are direct links to some screengrabs from my raw 720p AVI of Star Wars.  For comparison's sake, these are the same shots dark_jedi posted on his V3/BluGOUT thread.

Also, I'm currently reprocessing Star Wars again with some additional tweaks...specifically with the sharpness.  As much as a hate edge-enhancement, I've decided to test the waters with some very mild sharpening.  I'll post some shots of that when it's finished rendering...assuming they are even worth uploading :/

Did you do any sharpening for the DVDs? Screenshots from your discs look slightly sharper than the DJ/g-force versions.
