I’m almost curious to know where that insert shot comes from but I know it would ruin the magic 😃

Earlier in the scene when Anakin had him pinned down. I just flipped the shot and cropped it a bit.

Oh wow! I thought for sure it must be from AOTC itself. Well done!

For my personal edit of this scene I’m working on, I used this shot but after Anakin’s bit instead of after Obi-wan’s line. I found that it helps to time-remap it a bit to give a longer beginning which gives a little reaction from Obi-wan before he ducks. Also serves to make the shot feel distinct from the previous use of it.

The insert shot does the job I suppose, however I still despise the attitude Obi-Wan is giving Anakin. He is basically blaming Anakin for wanting to win their training duel, but behaves like a child that lost a game and insist on playing on until they have won themself.

I mean to be fair I think the duel tracks with both of their characterizations in AOTC. Anakin is impulsive and hotheaded and Obi-Wan is didactic and overbearing.

I’ve said this before, but it also helps a lot with Anakin complaining about Obi-Wan later in the film, both in Padme’s apartment but also in the garage scene. The original movie completely fails the “show, don’t tell” test. That’s why I would love to see this scene in a super extended cut, because it actually allows the audience to empathize with Anakin. In the original, we have to just take him at his word about Obi-Wan even though he’s emotionally unstable at the time.

Good point Octorox and I have to agree with you Jar Jar Bricks that it could add much needed substance to Anakin’s frustration in the context of an extended edition of the theatrical movie.

On the other hand I think that their antagonism towards each other bears the movie down and should be cut or greatly reduced, because it makes both character unlikeable. I mean it is hard to think that these two are friends, let alone brothers, and this scene does the opposite of reinforcing that belief.

So not an “extended cut” per se, but I’m cooking something. I’ve tackled this movie twice in the past and never been happy with it, but between the serious picture improvement of the deleted scenes via AI, the material from the Kenobi show, and my own improvement as an editor, I think I’m ready to give it another go.

It’s implied by Obi-Wan’s dialogue before the duel that Anakin usually won their spars, so him winning another wouldn’t have proven much. I took the speech as him saying that Anakin was getting too pre-occupied with winning or losing their spars and that he should have treated it as more of a learning opportunity. The interpretation that Obi-Wan is supposed to come across as a bit overbearing to give justification to Anakin’s rants also works. I’m fine with the live-action movies showing a more antagonistic side of their relationship when the animated stuff does plenty to show them being friendly with each other.

I’m interested! I personally think the best cut would keep some of Anakin’s “whiney” scenes, include a lot of the deleted scenes along with this scene, while removing the cringe love scenes in a similar way to Hal 9000’s TAS.

Here’s my first go at the scene, taking a combination of what a lot of others have done here. I did it for an AOTC edit I’m working on, but I’m fine with anyone using this in their edits if they care to.

I mixed it in 5.1, but only the center/left/right have sound, so theoretically if someone wanted to use this you could add more ambient noise or repeat the right/left on the surround channels for fuller music.

I love the choice of music cues. Feels perfect for the scene.

Yeah this is the best version of the scene yet!

I think cutting the false ending is a good move and improves the action, but there’s still a bit of oddness in the original editing which this version makes even more noticeable. Specifically, the shots of Obi-wan being disarmed are too quick, with one being only a couple of frames. It isn’t too bad when these quick cuts are followed by a lull in the action, but going right into Obi-wan disarming Anakin feels like one trick too many.

I see two potential solutions, and both involve making Obi-wan’s disarmament one fluid motion.

The first would be to use only part of the shot where Anakin first strikes Obi-wan’s saber, removing the brief shot of him pulling back for the final swing and cutting the next shot to show the follow-through. This would still be several quick cuts, but it may not be as noticeable.

The second option I see would be to remove the closeup shot of Anakin’s first strike altogether, going right from the wide shot of the action to a the brief shot of Anakin pulling back for the final swing, but reversing this shot so that it appears that Anakin is swinging forward at Obi-wan’s saber. Then you could keep almost all of Obi-wan being disarmed in the wide shot, depending on the continuity between the two shots.

Anyway, those are my two cents. The scene is so close to perfect, and the music really works!

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I agree, the edit at the ending ended up being a bit strange.

Honestly, the choices for shots at the end are so limited that it’s going to feel a bit janky no matter what. It’s not particularly well edited to begin with, plus there’s a huge gap between the two sequences within the show itself. I went for what I thought was the best “clarity of action”.

The music cues are absolutely brilliant. Nicely done.

What exactly is wrong with “Your need for victory, Anakin, it blinds you”? I took it to mean that a fight still isn’t over even though an opponent is disarmed. Seems like a valuable lesson for a Padawan, but it could be interpreted in a way that he is being too harsh on him and “holding him back”.

The way I understand it, the end of the fight will remain clunky like that unless it’s reinstated.

The problem is that Obi-Wan ends their match by doing precisely that, disarming his opponent.

It’s coming from the same guy who said “Only a Sith deals in absolutes”. Perhaps he does have an issue with hypocrisy. And does that justify Anakin’s rage at him? Idk, I appreciate these kind of complex character perspectives. It’s like Luke in TLJ. We can see that he was wrong in his thinking, but we can also sit back and be like: “Hey, he kind of had a point there about the Jedi.”

Personally, I removed it because I don’t need that moment in my edit I’m making, but I can see the argument for keeping it. I have this scene very early in Attack of the Clones. So I just need it to get the job done so we can move on to the main story.

Since we’re discussing AOTC edits and new editions has anybody thought about including this extended Jango death scene? Only a slight difference but I would love to see this in one of these new edits with the training scene.

EDIT: Including the flashback shot of boba holding the helmet from BoBF might be cool too.

Wow, that looks awesome. Professional quality. I’d definitely watch the super-extended version that’s been discussed here were it to feature this, the de-aged/color graded duel, and all the deleted scenes. I get some people want the love scenes cut, but I enjoy them in a so bad it’s good kind of way.

Woah that’s some really impressive VFX. I can see why it was cut out tbh. That’s some pretty brutal stuff for a prominent Jedi to do.

That being said, I would prefer it in an extended cut for sure.

My ideal cut would be something like what darthrush proposed, Hal/L8wtr’s cut with:

  • no Dexter
  • original title
  • Spence’s training scene
  • darthrush’s Naboo/kamino music transition
  • extended jango shots

I remember watching the revised Yoda scene where he doesn’t take out his lightsaber but I may want to reinstate that, I’m not sure. I might try to throw this together and see what happens.
