Making the Obi-Wan & Anakin training session (From the Kenobi series) work in an AOTC edit. — Page 5

Will a completed version of the scene be uploaded independently for editors at some point? I think plenty of people would like to slot it into Hal’s edit or possibly merge it with an extended version of AOTC for a super extended version.

I can take a crack at this using Snooker’s clean stereo. Got a lot of foley sounds in my library and am bored.

Give me an hour or two.

I haven’t gotten the time to finetune all the foley and audio levels, and I threw this together while watching Champions League (xDDD), so feel free to give feedback if you want the 5.1 mp4 file and some changes made to it.

General list of changes (used snooker’s music-free stereo track for the center channel):

  • 5.1 surround, with custom surround ambience, sounds etc.
  • Color graded to look like AotC’s color grading (increased glow in background, less bright colors, more vintage)
  • Rescored to feel upbeat and hopeful, as their relationship should be at this time. Only foreshadowing is at the end, with Anakin’s and Padme’s Love Theme and then the mother theme to accompany Anakin’s facial expression.
  • Edited it to be less obvious it consists of chopped parts, by removing “Anakin’s Victory”. It destroys flow imo.

Oh, and Streamable has compressed it to a stereo file so some of the background ambience might be/is louder than in the 5.1 surround file.

I liked the new music, I thought it went well with the “introduction feeling” for Anakin in AOTC, but… As long as there isn’t a decent deepfake for Ewan McGregor, I think this scene will be hardly convincing in the sense of being able to blend in with other scenes from AOTC. Just like Hayden, Mcgregor is very old compared to his appearance in AOTC and that’s quite noticeable (I don’t understand why no one who is skilled with digital de-age and has changed Hayden’s face hasn’t tried to do something to Mcgregor’s face yet).

I liked that you cut the fat and made the flow seamless though, and the color graded matched the scene as well.

I mean, the length of Ewan MacGregor’s beard changes noticeably between scenes in AOTC. I feel like I can forgive it personally. To me, the difference in cinematography is still the biggest argument against the scene fitting in, but I think it’s “good enough” for many edits at this point.

That works pretty well! I think some of the lightsaber collision sounds might be a tad bit delayed, though. Maybe it’s streamable messing things up, I’m not sure.

I love the rescore and the trimming of the scene. A lot of the sound effects seem to be out of time though.

If there are people interested in it, yes I’d be happy to share a finished clip.

I am one that is interested for sure.

I’ll try to render out a final version of my AotC edit with this scene edited in. I used Snooker’s rescore and sfx as a base, upon which I remixed the sound levels, added missing sfx, and then added in custom wipe transitions between the deleted scene of Padme in the Senate and then the scene in Palpatine’s office.

The rest of the edit is a hybrid of L8wtr’s and Hal9000’s with a few of my own cuts in there. I think it might be best to just create a thread for this “hybrid/mashup” edit with all the changes listed there in case anyone is interested in downloading. This started as just a personal edit for private viewing but I feel some might like it with the Kenobi series scene in there and the rescored transition of Padme and Anakin kissing to Kamino that originally was a little too abrupt for my taste in the Hal9000 edit.

The part where Anakin says, “Mercy doesn’t beat an enemy master”, could be an interesting way to integrate a new plot thread into the Prequels, in which Anakin partially turns because he just sees the dark side as stronger.

In my upcoming ROTS edit for example, he won’t show any guilt to having killed Dooku. Not only because I plan on making Anakin a colder character (when he’s using the dark side) but also because he sees it as the efficient thing to do. This way it’s maybe easier to stomach him being willing to murder all the Jedi because as Palpatine says, “When the Jedi learn what has transpired here, they will kill us”. He can’t let Palpatine die because he agrees with Palpatine’s dictatorship and wants the power to cheat death. So he does what needs to be done.

This sounds perfect! I’d love to check it out once it’s done.

Very impressive sound work. I love the little details, like being able to hear cars whizzing by. Not sure about the edit at the end. It does flow a little better, but Obi-Wan’s speech to Anakin about his need for victory blinding him doesn’t really make sense without seeing his premature celebration before that. Also, I like that part for establishing Anakin’s desire for validation from a father figure, which Palpatine takes advantage of later.

Coloring seems pretty good as well. There’s always gonna be room for improvement, but I think we’re in the territory where there’s other reshoot scenes that stick out worse. The scene in TPM where Anakin visits Padme on Coruscant, for example.

AotC Inclusion Clip

The clip with more finetuned foley:

https://streamable.com/nf9lw0 (No Obi-Wan deepfake here)

Deepfake

And since so many dislike Obi-Wan’s “aged” appearance (although I don’t mind, since AotC aged Ewan McGregor up with prosthetics and makeup), here’s the Obi-Wan deepfake:

https://streamable.com/3oslfa

Bear in mind that Ewan McGregor did some prosthetics work to appear older in the Prequels, so he has different appearance of his eyebrows. I think I struck a balance here tho, merging the deepfake and the original part. The deepfake alone made his face significantly different from his original, more aged appearance.

Only did the 3-4 first shots of Obi-Wan since it’s so time consuming. If it’s good enough, I can probably do the whole schtick. At least the necessary shots. Many of the dueling close-ups with blue glow are definitely not necessary and will be a nightmare anyway.

Mmhh… I think Hayden’s voice at the beginning (not throughout the entire duel, just at the beginning, before they start duelling) could be replaced with an AI generated voice. Eleven Labs can reproduce Anakin’s voice from the Prequels almost perfectly, to the point that it’s even in distinguishable from the original voice. So, it could be used to match his younger tone of voice from the rest of the movie. Also, I don’t know if it’s me, but I see that the video is a bit jarring. Anyway, overall it’s pretty fine, although I would cut off the background noise of the speeders going around the city at the beginning (it doesn’t make much sense to hear it since we don’t see any speeders going around), and replace it with Anakin’s theme, like others did in their edits of the scene.

In my opinion the Obi-Wan deepfake doesn’t work at all, the portion around his eyes look twice as big as the should.

Streamable has shit 720p cap so can’t do much about the video quality. I can upload a high bitrate to Google Drive for those who want.

People can do what they want with it. Can upload one with and without music. This was made for those who didn’t have the skill and/or time to put it together themselfs.

As for the deepfake, if it doesn’t work it doesn’t work. 😃

You all have done some amazing work here! One thing constantly bothers me when trying to put all of these scenes together into one fight: It’s missing a shot. There needs to be a close up shot of Obi-Wan starting to move after Anakin disarms him. Without it, there’s a jarring cut from Anakin’s close up to an extremely wide shot of Obi-Wan already in motion, which feels disjointed and hard for the brain and eye to follow. It also very suddenly breaks the 180 rule, which doesn’t help but can’t really be avoided entirely. It just doesn’t feel right.

I did a little mock up of inserting a shot into that spot, I’m sure there are other options between the show and the PT, but I thought this illustrated my point well enough:

I really think that shot is super important to make the scene flow correctly. I don’t know how to explain it, but I can feel that it’s missing.

The lines ‘Your weapon’s gone…it’s over.’ followed by ‘Your need for victory, Anakin, it blinds you’ feel superfluous to the flow before and after. Obi-wan’s next line ‘You’re a great warrior, Anakin…’ feels like the proper end to the action, and it may be best to just delete the second false ending altogether. I’d suggest cutting from Obi-wan being disarmed straight to the wideshot of Obi-wan spinning out of his crouch to put an end to the fight.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Yeah, that would probably work too. Either way, the whole end portion just doesn’t quite work.

That insert shot works pretty good I think! Though I think Nev’s suggestion makes sense too.
