Machete Order? mmm — Page 2

For some reason R1 just didn’t click with me, and seems unnecessary to Star Wars.
This is the order I showed the movies to my kids, and is my preferred viewing order:

SW
ESB
ROTJ
TFA

I’m assuming that next they’ll see EP8 and then EP9. Any prequel/offshoot movies they’ll have to discover on their own when they’re older.

Thank the maker for Harmy’s despecialized editions, so we don’t have to watch them on VHS, and TFA for being AMAZING compared to the PT.

yeah almost like my machete order, but i take off TPM, they introduce the characters again in the AotC anyway, maybe we loose the reveal that Anakin’s mother is a captive slave on Tatooine but we get it in AtoC and TrofS.

mine is: R1, SW, ESB, AotC, TrofS, TrofJ and TFA (R1,4,5,2,3,6, and 7)

I’ve never understood machete order. It seems like it’s just a half-assed way to try and do something with the PT. Like it’s there in the pile and you have to put it somewhere.

It’s really better to just ditch it, IMO. What are you missing? It’s sad, yeah, but that’s just the way it turned out. I don’t watch the holiday special either.

That’s what makes it machete order.

But if you take fanedited versions which are “re-cut” versions, is it still machete order if you include TPM ? I think so.

I weep for the Ewok duology, it’s not been represented here once!

Yeah, I guess I would insert them between ROTJ and TFA. 😉
Actually I remember enjoying those as a kid. Wouldn’t want to spoil that by seeing them as an adult though.

I saw Battle for Endor recently. It’s better than AOTC and ROTS, but it’s not great.

That’s why it was created, for those who did want to include the prequels in some way. The guy who has the website basically says if you don’t like the prequels, don’t watch them.

Personally, I’ve never taken to Machete order. Being deeply familiar with the films myself, I don’t derive any benefit from breaking the flow of the OT by jamming the PT in the middle for the sake of avoiding spoilers. If I were to have a marathon by myself or with friends who have already seen everything, I’d go chronological, likely skipping the PT or using fan edits. If I were introducing someone to the saga, say, to cram for VIII this December, I’d show them the OT and TFA in rapid succession, followed by R1 if they’re into it. If whoever I’m showing the films to in this scenario is interested in the prequels, I’d show those on their own day after the fact. I’d never force them on anyone, but I do think they’re worth a watch for new fans simply for perspective. It would be a mistake to muddy someone’s initial viewing with them, though.

Even knowing the Vader reveal, the prevention of that spoiler isn’t what I like about Machete Order. My favorite things is that you see the Luke’s story play out quite a bit in ANH and ESB, you get hammered with the crazy reveal. Then you see Luke’s father rise and fall to the dark side. And then both their stories come to head in ROTJ. It adds a lot more emotion when I view it in such order.

My favorite thing about it is you’re 1/3 of the way towards removing the PT entirely.

The fact that people are still trying to find something to do with the PT is funny.
And hard to understand.

Not really. I believe that in 10 years from now a few people will still think R1 was good, while the rest of the world will know R1 sucks. The same happened with the PT, if you remember.

I’m sorry if you used to think the PT was good. That’s hard to understand too.
It does seem like many who liked the PT (usually because they watched it when they were young and hadn’t yet developed a barometer of taste) have come to realize how poorly made they were.

Not at all. I was a teenager when TPM came out and it was an impressive movie (it basically was never seen at that time, and along with The Matrix 1999 was quite an interesting year for sci-fi). It took the release of AOTC for starting to see something was wrong. ROTS redeemed a few things but still carried the same flaws. So I’ve never used to think the PT was good, only parts of it and never at the same time. However I’m still a big fan of Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars. What are they waiting for to give him a SW animated series again ?

Because his first one wasn’t that great?

Is that the Samurai Jack one?

Yes. Because Star Wars needed Mace Windu jumping a thousand feet into the air to punch a skyscraper-size droid to pieces and that’s apparently much better than TFA or RO.

I liked what I saw of that much more than what I’ve seen of the other one.
Couldn’t sit and watch much of either though.

I think it’s reasonably entertaining for what it is, but it’s not really Star Wars.

Stop pretending to be SW fans. First your unconditional love for terrible disney flicks, then THIS. Man. Can’t believe that… well, it does explain everything as a matter of fact 😃
