I use Itunes. It can do what you describe. Doubt you can use a zune with it, thought.
Scratch that, it looks like maybe you can use Itunes after all. Do a google search.
What do you all use to play your PC based music collections? I usually have mine on random, but it will eventually play a file from an audio book, or some kids music or something... I realize I could make a playlist including the 1000s of tracks I want and excluding the 100s of tracks I don't... but they're all (or mostly) correctly genre tagged so I'm looking for something that can take 3 or 4 genres (or more!) as an autoplaylist as opposed to song-by-song playlist.
Oh, I'm using Zune currently, by the way.

foobar2000. No idea if it can do what you want, but I think it's great.

foobar2000? Is that a once-futuristic exercise machine or energy bar?
WMP because I'm used to it and the interface is relatively simple. Would like something better though.

Usually I use VLC for mp3's and movies, but I'll also use foobar2000 or HaiHaiSoft Universal Player on the off chance that I have a format VLC won't play.
1. How do you do that with iTunes? I've had iTunes before and am pretty happy not having it.
2. So I ask because if iTunes can do it, it's probably similar to do with other software.

Maybe I've misunderstood your objective. I just make a smart playlist and set it to only include certain genres.
I know there are plenty of programs out there better than itunes, but it works fine for me and i'm too lazy to go looking for something better.
You have inspired me to google it. Looks like Zune does it too: http://gizmodo.com/215303/we-were-wrong-zune-does-support-smart-playlists.

There was an ipod update a few years back that screwed up smart playlists. Apple refused to admit there was an issue and people were seriously pissed off (personally I *love* smart playlists). Eventually it was fixed with the next update.
