Help Wanted: Newsgroup Users... Please Help Me

I know this is slightly better-suited to the Off-Topic forum, but I felt it would get better noticed here. I would like to PiF some Transformers DVDs to some friends of mine here in Australia for New Year’s. There is a blog called Karyuudo Fansubs that details the releases they have posted in alt.binaries.dvd.anime (they used to use a DC++ hub, but were requested to stop). Anyway, these discs are essentially DVD Rips of the Japanese DVDs with their own english translation subtitles. They have released the following:

  • Transformers Zone

    • Transformers: Car Robots Volume 1
    • Transformers: Robot Masters Volume 3

Zone is a brand-new release and Car Robots is now receiving a repost. I do not know if Robot Masters is available at the moment. My plea of help is this: Would somebody be kind enough to download these DVDs for me from the newsgroups? I was slowly getting them from the hub they used, but now they are no longer available there and I cannot use the newsgroups with my current ISP. I would gladly offer to send some DVDs your way in return (after I get some more blank DVD-Rs for Christmas). For a list of the preservation DVDs I have, I’ll let you know by email or something (only those of you considering downloading these TF DVDs for me though).

    Please help me. Pretty please?

  • Well, now that you've posted about them, I'm curious. I can get them on my unlimited account. But that's some serious headers to pull...

I hate mailing stuff (or waiting for mail), and Australia seems a bit far. And I've heard customs a pain(?). Did you need them by New Years's Day? I don't know when I could get them into my download queue.

Hmmm... anyone have tips on setting up a private FTP server? Or is that a bad idea?
(It would cut into my torrenting, and my plans to post something to usenet, but I think I could spare the bandwidth).

One day I found... 10 years had got behind me. Next day was worse.

No need to worry about it. I've already got someone helping me out. If you're interested in them, maybe I could send you them in a trade once i get them.

    Well, that's solved.

Hey, thanks for the offer. I probably wont need to trade, I've got the headers, and it turns out that my queue isn't as crowded as it usually is.

Well, it might be the wrong forum to answer in, hope no one minds.

When Segaflip comes back from his vacation, he'll be posting lots more. His Star Wars posts go to a.b.starwars. He's been crossposting the rest to a.b.dvd, a.b.dvd5, and a.b.superman.

If you have Giganews, Easynews (their web-search goes back about 30 days, their nntp might be catching up), Newshosting, or some other server with long retention, you could still get a few. Check "~~~Segaflip's Newsgroup Posting List~~~" over in the starwars fan-edit/release forum, here. Right now you might be able to get a couple of CLP releases (he posted those under the nym of "CLP Rep"), and the Dune Fanfiltration Edit. In a.b.starwars, the latest one was A Digital Man's Musical Journey.

You could also search "fan-edit", and variations of that on nfo.ngindex Oh, goody :-p, they're down for a few weeks.

Fansubs are kind-of a fan-edit, a.b.dvd.anime looks good. There's sub-dvd quality fansubs in other a.b.*.anime.* groups. (Usually very low quality, though).

A side note about Newshosting: their retention goes back farther than their ability to send headers. You can use BNR, or some other program to get that stuff with nzb's. If nzb's weren't posted, you can tediously get an nzb for each individual file at freenzbs (nzb also works for most premium servers).

And if you can get torrents to work, MySpleen is the place to go. If you try that, and need tech help, PM me.

Excelent.. thanks so much for the information. Since this post though I see the fan edits sans the Star Wars variety are few and far between. Is there any way to request posts of other titles like the Harry Potters, etc??

Car Robots 1 was cool. Nice to see some effort like this. I'm hoping the repacked Zone will start getting a torrent soon after finally completing Car Robots 1. Bravo to just scanning the original cover so one can start slowly tooling on their own to have a new one.

guiltyspark, did you do that cover? Nice. Would I be able to get a copy of it? I am slightly annoyed though at the repack of Zone as I just got the first version from someone who got the DVDs off the newsgroups for me :/

At least you got the DVD. ;-) They're still trying to complete it on the BT repack. I'm stuck at 98.9% which means I finally got past the 85.2% hurdle of several days ago.

Yes, I did the cover. Slowly I get time to work on it. I got a chance to fix up the logos but still need some time to finish off the cover. I'll let you know. Did the Zone DVD come with a scanned cover? I don't think the repack does.

Yeah, there is a cover on my disc. I would glady send it to you (and perhaps the Robot Masters Vol.3 disc) in exchange for the repack of Zone. Let me know.

What is "Robot Masters", anyway? Just their name for Headmasters?

Well, no actually. I think, rather than trying to explain the whole 'Robot Masters' thing myself, you should read this Wikipedia page that explains it pretty well.

In short, the DVDs (of which there were only a few) told the story from the online comic and it is a chance to see our favorite Transformers all together in one conflict. The CG isn't bad, but not the best. Still a lot of fun. I was actually considering translating the online comic. After all, the Japanese is fairly basic and the comic is relatively short.

    Everybody:
I know this is a newbie question, but how do I get the quote function to say "Guiltyspark wrote:" instead of just "Quote"?

Interesting. But I'm not sure I'd even have a Zone disc to trade. So far the first two DVD burns crap out & lock up a few mins into the DVD for no reason (other DVDs burned before & after work fine). Trying a different program now but the verification has already locked up. I'm afraid the repack BT may have some bad mojo. And this really sucks after how many days it took to complete and seed afterwards. -_-

Man, that sucks. I hope you manage to get it to work. Perhaps you should try burning a data DVD with all the files on it, send it to me, I'll try and burn it here. I'll of course send you a copy of the one I have.

I have since deleted the PM, but whoever provided me with the 3 DVDs - Would you be willing to help me again by getting the repack of Zone and the newly released Superlink Vol. 1?

It was me. Let me see what I can do. I've got a massive usenet queue right now and will need my bandwidth for some other stuff for the next week or so. I'll let you know. Shouldn't be a problem if they've been posted.

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

Thanks. I would of course offer any of the discs that I have in trade. No rush, I suppose if they've only just been posted they should stay around for a little while.

Good luck to you, I'm still waiting on it to show up on TPB.org. I keep trying to burn off the Zone disc but I can't figure it out. Nero and DVDShrink produce the same results yet the hard drive copy will play in WinDVD just fine. hrm...

I finally got Zone to burn off. Super Link didn't get a repack announced on the newsgroups, did it? I'd rather get the "best" version rather than download and then re-download.

It's good that you managed to get Zone to burn off. And no, Super Link has not been released more than once, there is only one version.

Cool. Now hopefully someone will post it to TPB or have it on DC++.

I've been toying with the Zone cover. Sort of based off the Japanese cover (well, the front side I saw on amazon.co.jp) and an old Transformers toy box. I'm rather curious how the R2 backside looked, though.
