To the best of my knowledge he has never punched a baboon.

I heard he picked some world record boogers on the PT set while re-re-re-revising the script!  Gotta give em props for that!

I like George. He's one of my idols. I don't like the changes he made for the Blu-Ray (and all the time I thought he was done with making changes). But luckily, even though there is a digital sunset in the beginning of American Graffiti (which has been seen since the CE DVD) he hasn't made any changes to that since and remains that way for the SE DVD and Blu-Ray. I also enjoy his unique vision of fantasy and adventure that made Star Wars and Indiana Jones such magnificent films. And I do love the Star Wars saga (though II was so-so). If it wasn't for George, there be no Star Wars, no phenomenon. I know sometimes his Star Wars franchise sells out a little, but I look at the positives on some of the other stuff; the cartoons, the Ewok adventures, video games, and Lego (the latter which got me to become a Star Wars fans in the first place). I respect George as a writer, director, and a genius.

Even when he is making bad films and stealing classic ones, he's actually still doing some cool stuff. He's invested a lot of money into the technology sector with all of his obsessions for gizmos and computers. We would be years behind in most respects--the industry infrastructure, the talent pool, cameras, CG, software and hardware, etc.--were it not for the fact that he invested in these things before most people did.

That's actually what Lucas said he wanted to be remembered for more than anything else. I remember reading an interview with him--it might have been Time--around when Episode II came out and he hoped that a hundred years in the future he would be remembered as a guy who helped move the state of the art forward when digital technology was first emerging.

Didn't he donate half his profit to charity, or something?

2. I have to say that I appreciate his attitude towards the many fan editors of his films.  There is no doubt that he's well aware of this site and fanedit.org.  In fact it was through fanedits that I found this site.  Other producers and directors have gotten very offended about people touching their films.  But he turns a blind eye towards those who tamper with his films though I'm sure he's aware that everyone on this site, editor or edit watcher, criticisizes his every decision.  I don't like a lot of what he's done myself, but the fact that he allows so many of you to do what you do so well speaks volumes about his character to me.

I enjoy this aspect as well. I think their actions (or non-actions) have also set a sort of precedent as well with other studios/movies with regards to fan-edits, the sort of "laissez-faire" attitude.

I do think he is more shrewd than just being a "nice guy" here though. You start picking fights with your fanbase, then you drive away the people lining your pockets and upholding your public status. If they aren't hurting anyone or hurting your business in any significant way then just let them do their thing. Lucasfilm used to be total dicks to their fans in the 1990s but they learned they had to co-exist with them. Steve Sansweet I think went a long way to sort of mediating the give-and-take there, from what I know, which, even though I have critized the guy before, I have to admit we should all be thankful for.

Aren't the fan edits considered piracy?

Which... is why it's considered to be a good move by Lucas? °_°

Which makes me wonder if he handles that or if fox does, and then again I wouldn't download one anyway.

Yes I'm aware, but I'm wondering how safe it would be from the suits?

My dad's wondering the same thing.  Well, in the context of the fan preservations, not fan edits.

The question is: Are fan edits/preservations REALLY piracy?  My dad thinks so.  But maybe he's right, though.  Maybe the fan edits/preservations ARE piracy, and we're just blind to that fact.  And that sucks so badly, that the botched official releases are the only ones I'm allowed to own. >:(

The franchises I get nerdy about are so obscure that not even most nerds know about them.

That's a bummer you're restricted from viewing these preservations. It's not piracy in the strictest sense; the intent isn't to profit and the reach of the edits is fairly narrow in the grand scheme of things. Unless the existence of, say, a Harmy or Adywan product begins to encroach on Lucas' ability to profit from Star Wars (if anything, all the edits are helping Lucas, as they continue to perpetuate the adoration of a product that he alone has the ability to make the entire world aware of once in a technological generation.) I doubt we will ever see any serious backlash toward communities like this.

They can still nail you even with piracy without profit if they wanted to.
