The purpose is usually to portray the idea that whatever is happening is happening, and usually you can tell. Preferably they do it in a way that isn’t total cheeseball though and that’s where most fail.

Han……………SOLO: A Star Wars Story - 5/10
Thought it dragged more than it should, and often felt to me like a checklist of questions that had to be answered even though no one asked them? Like, I’m not complaining “durr the movie was unnecessary” because I could say that about a lot of movies, it just didn’t seem like they did anything very interesting with what they had. I’m glad many of you seem to like it so much.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 7/10
Haven’t watched this in years. It mostly holds up, even if I think the protagonist goes too crazy (like, throwing all the stuff in the window and refusing to answer his family’s justified fear with anything beyond "I’m not crazy!).

Why is that? I usually get angry when people like things I don’t like or dislike things that I like.

I disagree but will respect your opinion.

Idk, I’m glad that something harmless like a space adventure flick gave people some amount of enjoyment or happiness.

I used to like it a lot more, but I just wasn’t feeling it this time. I’m fickle, I could like it more again next time I watch it.

Hm. That feeling is foreign to me.

The director’s cut is better.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

You’re the outlier here, not Coffee.
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

Pretty much perfection. Great story. Great camera work. The Mario Brothers were ridiculously evil, and I loved it. I also love
spoilage
when a depressing or horrifying ending is accompanied by grand or happy or lighthearted music. It’s also hard to tell if it really is depressing, because he has found happiness in his own delusion after all.
Very good movie. I don’t have much else to say I guess. Someone posted about it in this thread a while ago (don’t remember who), so I decided to check it out. Glad I did.

Dek, I think I was the one who mentioned Badlands. I would highly recommend checking out Days of Heaven as well, which is done by the same director. It left me with similar feelings, where I couldn’t really figure out quite exactly why I enjoyed the movie so much.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962) - 10/10

Fantastic. Very few problems. Great movie.
Also great, but I liked the first one more. I think this one just dragged a tiny bit at places. And where did everyone get those hockey pads?
I liked some things in it, but this one was a hot mess. I never felt like there was a coherent goal, and stuff just sort of happened. In the opening scene when we see the Gyro Pilot steal Max’s crap, I thought he was going to find him and confront him, with them then recognizing each other. But instead it takes most of the movie for him to show up again, and Max never says he’s mad at him for taking his ride, and there’s never any indication that they recognize each other. The one stand out scene that I really liked was at the end of the fight with Blaster.
Also, the costuming gets even weirder in this one because for some reason, destroyed civilization and no gasoline means nobody tries to hold on to modern fashion and style sensibilities. And then when they get on the train the little man somehow gets an 1800s style suit and bowler hat.
'Twas great. Really fun movie. Wish I watched when I was younger.

Bruce Spence’s character from Beyond Thunderdome isn’t meant to be his character from Road Warrior.

While traveling in the desert in his camel-drawn vehicle, Max is overtaken by a small methane-powered plane flown by the freewheeling bandit Jedediah and his son. Although the two characters bear no relation to each other, Jedediah is played by Bruce Spence, who was the much-loved Gyro Pilot in Road Warrior. Jedediah succeeds in taking off with all of Max’s worldly goods, leaving the hero to perish in the desert.
So why did they cast the exact same actor as a weird fellow with a flying machine? I swear Miller wanted to confuse the audience. Great Tina Turner songs though.
Only sporting goods and fetishwear survive the apocalypse, at least down under.
There’s a Kill button on Max’s dashboard?
I guess the really bad American dub of Mad Max has vanished off the face of the Earth?
Where were you in '77?

That’s dumb. Why not take a perfect opportunity and make it the same guy? That actually makes it worse.

It’s like if the Bond movies had Donald Pleasance play a totally different bald guy with a cat in a volcano lair. 😛

I thought it sounded odd when I first saw it on HBO as a kid, but couldn’t put my finger on it. I had no idea that it was dubbed, because who would dub over an entire movie with English speaking actors? It’s laughable the American distributor didn’t think anybody could understand the Aussie accents.
