The Conjuring (2013)

4/10

It was a movie that is widely regarded to be good, but made after the 90s, and it’s Duracell. What did you expect?

TV’s Frink said:

Exactly what happened. Still is funny.

Yep. That most everyone considers a generic, derivative, cliched, silly, obnoxious horror film worthy of the made-for-TV or direct-to-video market something approaching above-average is, indeed, still funny.

Wait wait wait…aren’t you like a huge NOES fan or something?

Lol ok. Change the release date to 1995 and you would have loved it.

BUT EVERYTHING IN 1995 WAS ORIGINAL AND EVERYTHING NOW IS JUST RIPPING 1995 OFF

1995 is so yesterday. I recommend you check out 1985. That was before the Milleniums ruined everything.

A fan of parts 1, 3, and 7, all of which are better than The Conjuring could ever hope to be.

Millennials were just little kids in '95.

Oh, and to those resorting to the oh-so-amusing “You only hate horror movies if they’re new” strawman argument, check this out:

2001

  • Session 9
  • The Others

2002

  • Bubba Ho-Tep
  • Dark Water
  • The Eye

2003

  • Beyond Re-Animator
  • Into the Mirror

2004

  • The Machinist
  • R-Point

2005

  • Fragile
  • Tideland

2007

  • The Mist
  • Trick 'r Treat

2009

  • The Hole

2013

  • Odd Thomas

2014

  • The Babadook

2015

  • Maggie
  • The Witch

2016

  • The Eyes of My Mother

That’s a list of nineteen horror films – all made within the 21st century, all of which I’ve rated an 8 or higher. I could’ve listed movies I’ve rated 6-7, short films, and films which aren’t strictly horror (dark fantasy, thrillers, kaiju films, etc.), but I decided to go the route of brevity.

We’re just trying to make sense of the nonsensical.

There’s nothing nonsensical about not liking The Conjuring.
I didn’t know it was so well liked.

Now where’s that Top Gun gif. . . .

I didn’t know Conjuring was so well thought of. I liked it though.

Pretty much this. I thought it was fine, not great, but certainly better than shitty trash horror movies like NOES, Friday the 13th, and the like. It was an actual movie with actors, story, and so on.

Funny how most horror fans disagree with you regarding NOES. But I guess majority rules only when you agree with that majority.

Yeah I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece or genre defining but it’s a well made movie and a 4/10 and not as good as bird is absurd. It has a good consistent tone at least and I’d give it a 7.5/10.

I know they ran it into the ground with the sequels, but the original NOES is pretty damn terrifying. Whatever happened to that Johnny Depp kid anyway? 😉

Where were you in '77?

Not to mention it had a strong female protagonist and was conceived by a filmmaker who had a vision and a story to tell, a far cry from Halloween-knockoff dross like Friday the 13th which is only about tits and blood.

Definitely, although Nightmare on Elm Street 1 is great, but after that they’re pretty much comedies.

Wes Craven did that again with Scream in the 90s.
