X Men (2000):
It’s been years since I first watched this and since I’ve been bingeing the 90s cartoon I’d thought I would give it a watch. The biggest problem for me was that it was way too short, even the deleted scenes that come on the DVD add nothing but filler, so I assume that’s the fault of the screenplay. Speaking of screenplay, for the most part it’s fine but there were a couple bits that made me unintentionally snigger. (“Do you know what happens to a toad when its struck by lighting?”) Some of the editing choices also felt off to me, some shots cut away to another location too quickly for my taste (this doesn’t affect the action scenes thankfully, though they are pretty average and not particularly spectacular). Overall it feels very small in scale, like they had a small budget or something. The performances by the actors are probably the best thing about this movie, except for Hale Berry and Anna Paquin, I didn’t think they were any good.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

I had low expectations, as it sounded not-that-great on paper. And it definitely could have been terrible. But a fun cast and a well-written story left me quite glad I watched it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

I had actually pretty low expectations. I didn’t know where they could take the story and the characters. Some reviews spoke of a spineless plot and other issues. But god damn was I wrong. I was thoroughly pleased by the end of the showtime. The character development in this was absolutely amazing. I was astounded at how well each character was served by the story. It hands down is the funniest marvel movie to date. Some of the jokes were hit or miss, but emphasis on some. I did have some issues with the plot but overall I thought this was a good fun ride!

Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl

I was pretty excited for this seemingly quirky, coming of age film and am surprised I didn’t catch it earlier. The first half of this movie is actually pretty lighthearted and it had me dying of laughter. The humor was spot on and I was taken aback by how funny the movie had been. Then things started going to shit and there were some pretty powerful scenes for me. The characters were interesting and well written. The screenplay was raw, emotional, and deeply affecting. I was a little underwhelmed by the ending, but overall, a good flick.

Chinatown:

Script is a masterpiece. Film is good but a little overrated I think. Suffers from too many mis-en-scene distractions. The overly melodramatic ending–much debated–just wasn’t conceived and shot right. You can tell the ending doesn’t go with the rest of the movie…and I don’t mean that thematically. I mean it was hurried and rushed, compared to everything else in the movie, which was meticulously planned out and executed. Towne wrote the script but Polanski changed the ending, after all.

It’s a good movie, well acted by the principals, but perhaps not as excellent as its reputation would imply.

I saw this film on TV when I was a kid. After they started digging and they all passed out under the heat, I said, “Now it’s just gonna get really cold all of the sudden” as a joke. When it actually happened a few seconds later, I was flabbergasted.

It took me three sittings to get through this one, because it was so bland and boring.

I’ll be watching The Godfather for the first time tonight. I am beyond excited. Will leave my thoughts here when finished.

I hope you’ve built in an extra three hours for Part II, because you won’t want to stop.

That is shocking. I hope you enjoy it. The Godfather is one of the greatest films of all time.

The Godfather

A hell of a movie. I was thoroughly impressed. The acting, the dialogue, it all just was the perfect blend to show a characters slow transformation into a person devoid of any empathy or love of any kind. It’s almost haunting to watch the last 10 minutes. Beautiful cinema though. I cannot wait to check out the second one in the next few days.

I rewatched Charade with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn for the second time, after a few years of it slowly becoming a favorite. Great soundtrack and quirky dialogue, but not as fun as I remembered. Still a favorite.

Continuing with my plan of watching every film on the AFI top 100, I watched Casablanca for the first time.

I must say that I was quite tired when viewing so hopefully it did not hinder my judgement too much.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. Great acting, witty dialogue, a good character arc. I just felt that I did not connect with the romance all that much. The flashback sold me on the romance and I genuinely felt really bad for Rick and what he had to go through, but once they reconnected, they fell back in love all to quickly and made the ending not feel as emotional. But I still appreciated the ending more for the fact that Rick decided to finally fight for a greater cause. That was an arc that felt earned.

In the end, I liked It’s A Wonderful Life A LOT more and I think films like La La Land fleshed out a romance far better which paid off more in the end, but I still appreciated this. Onto the Godfather Part Two and 12 Angry Men! As you can tell, I am not really moving through the AFI Top 100 in numerical order.
