STAR TREK: BEYOND
Saw it again. It’s even better when you know what to expect. Fun picking out the great references.
It’s into what, 7th week? It was still pulling some people into the theater. I hope that bodes well for the future.
I still can’t believe there was a 1976 sequel to Rosemary’s Baby, and it was actually made for tv.

Made for TV sequels used to be more of a thing and it is crazy to discover them. My favorite useless sequel is The Sting II, which got a theatrical release.

Oh yes, in the 80’s and 90’s sure. Who could ever forget Splash Too? (Hanks and Hannah not included, sold separately.) Or Beastmaster 3 The Eye of Braxus? But I don’t think it had been done before in the 70’s. Tv series based on a successful movie being a wholly different beast.

Quicksilver (1986) 7/10
This movie just drips with 1980’s styles. From Bacon’s feathered hair to the pulsating synth based soundtrack. This film came out a year or so after the “Flashdance” and “Footloose” dance epics and continues to follow the safe corporate formula to sell soundtrack albums and feature the production company’s (Universal) then current mediocre music acts. Paul Rodriguez shines in Cheech Marin’s role and it was cool to see Laurence Fishburne (credited as Larry Fishburne) before his real breakout into Hollywood films. The story is ok, but way too many insentience of characters being in the right place at the right moment to witness events that move the story along. It has a heart, but it’s been smothered with a lot of cheese. Still, I liked it.

Ghostbusters (2016)
I liked it. I was unfamiliar with the cast, but am now a Kate McKinnon fan; without her the movie would have about half the charm (and most of that half would be from Chris Hemsworth). Not as good or as funny as the original, but considerably better than Ghostbusters 2. The effects were pretty meh, some of the weapons were a bit much and some of the music sucked, but I enjoyed it more than I expected to due to all the haters. Hoping for a sequel! 6/10

I’d probably give it an 8/10 and I don’t remember the music one way or the other, but otherwise I agree with this completely.
McKinnon and Hemsworth were both amazing.
Now I feel like I should give this a chance and watch it.

I was pretty close to giving it 7/10. It would be at least 6.5 if I didn’t hate half points. For some reason I’ve been a bit harsher with scores lately. The Shallows probably deserved 7/10 as well.
Zootopia (2016) – C+/B-
This film was much more enjoyable than I had expected; I really had no interest in it at all in the first place, but someone put it on, so I watched it.
There were a lot of fun parts, humorous parts, and it generally was okay. The main problem with it is the ever present and overly blatant use of dumb jokes, puns and references that just aren’t funny, and ultimately get in the way of my enjoyment of the film. The most glaring example of this is probably Mr. Big, who is a blatant The Godfather reference. Similar to the ESB reference in Toy Story 2, only a lot worse. And a much lesser “nitpick” problem I had with him was how predictable and unfunny they made the “Mr. Big is actually super tiny” joke. I also didn’t find the bunny breeding jokes very funny. I noticed them, I may have cringed at a couple of them, but it was never funny.
The secondary problem I had with it, isn’t actually that big; it isn’t really a problem at all. I thought the main theme kind of just stuck out too much. Now, the thing that’s actually a problem, is the “bunnies can call other bunnies cute…” line, which made no sense and didn’t have anything to do with the film as a whole. It was just a one off dialogue exchange that didn’t do anything but confuse me. Is that supposed to be like the “black people can call other black people niggers” thing?
I just can’t decide on whether or not it deserves to be on the “B” spectrum or not. Definitely not worth a re-watch for me.
The Secret of Nimh (1982) – B++
Don Bluth.
(For further information, please see the paragraph below.)
I haven’t seen this film since I was little, and I honestly didn’t remember very much about it. My brothers and I just kind of decided to watch it again. It’s a very good and well made film. Really the only issue I have with it is that it feels like it’s not long enough. It runs 82 minutes, and none of Don Bluth’s most well known animated films have ever had long running times, but this one in particular just felt too short. Nothing really even felt rushed or anything, it just didn’t feel like any developments in the film took enough time to make it at its most satisfying when it comes to a close. Really not a big issue at all. Great film.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.
Strange, I laughed at those jokes in Zootopia. The bunnies line is just a reflection of Judy’s issue with being thought of as just a defensless little bunny. You’re reading far too much into it.
I’ve tried to warm up to Secret Of NIMH over the years, but Bluth took too many liberties with the source material, which I read and loved back in the 5th grade. None of that mystical mumbo jumbo is in the book, and the rats do not dress like they’re at a Ren Fest. The rat’s whole backstory would have made a film in itself, and got way more time in the book as well.

If she said: “Don’t call me cute…” that would have made sense. The specific way she said it made it seem less like she was actually bothered by it and more like she was correcting him for doing something that wasn’t culturally accepted. It just didn’t make sense to me.

Yeah, I can understand that. I’ve never read the book, but I did think that the mystical elements and the weird medieval theme that the rats were doing was kind of weird. It never really bothered me, though, which is probably why I didn’t mention it in my previous post.

I absolutely agree with you here. Zootopia was very dissapointing to me for how much it was hyped up. The same praise was given to Inside Out and I freaking LOVED it but Zootopia was incredibly underwhelming. It’s theme already stuck out too much, but sometimes I found the message blatantly wrong like the “cute bunnies line”. Zootopia overall was frustrating and I would rather think of things like Big Hero 6 and Inside out to mention some of the recent animated films I adored.
Ferris Buellers Day Off
Grade: A-
Omg, it’s been YEARS since I last saw this and I remember thinking it was alright, but damn, this movie kicks so much fucking ass. It’s hilarious, witty, relatable and just a good fun hour or two to uplift your spirits in general. Now when Marvel says they want Homecoming to have a John Hughes tone, it excites me a ton! Overall this was just fantastic. So many great moments.
I’ve never understood the appeal of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The character’s a narcissist and a sociopath who has his ego fellated by everyone around him and never receives his comeuppance. I’m really supposed to root for this guy?
As far as I’m concerned, Rooney was the real hero.

That’s what makes him so awesome. He’s like James Bond, all the boys want to be him, and the girls want to be with him.
Not enough people read the EU.

Perhaps, but any principal that practically breaks into your house to prove you’re playing hooky is probably a few cans short of a six pack.

So it’s worse now?
I didn’t think it was worthy of the A. That’s why I put B++ instead of A-. B+ is just fine for it.

Hmmm, I’m gonna need some charts and graphs to better understand this.
Think of it like grades in school. The film was an 89.9%, which is technically a B, or more specifically, a B+. I said B++ to try and convey how close to the A spectrum it was in my mind.
(I don’t have time to make the graph right now 😉.)

An 89.9% is a B+.
A 90% is an A-.
So your grade is an 89.9999%?
Again, some charts and graphs would really help.
