Why do you always mention “dated” as a negative? Shouldn’t a film look and feel like the era it was made/set in? Makes you seem very young. Not meaning this as an insult, just wondering.
Halloween III is the only film in the franchise I like other than the original. It’s an absurd October must-watch for me.

Lol the only part about star wars (1977) that feels dated to me is the hair. Of course there are one or two shots in the film that don’t look realistic But they don’t look any worse than some of the over the top cgi you see nowadays.

Of course I guess star wars is kind of a special case…

A part of Star Wars that does feel dated is how there’s no real cross-galaxy instant communication. While Star Wars does have a lot of advanced technology, it takes a lot of time for information to get around. It almost feels like the world a couple of centuries ago: We did have newspapers and such, but there was no Internet, or even television. Everybody lived in a village.

To me the only dated about Star Wars is some of it’s acting.

It is rather ‘theatrical’ in its acting. Something I like about it.

They send transmissions across galaxies in star wars. And that doesn’t bother me anyway because we aren’t to that point in real life yet so we don’t know how that will work.

But they communicate with holograms over large distances so it’s reasonable to assume they can send messages in text form too. Its just not important to be featured.

the day i see a text message being sent in star wars… (shudder)

“Calculate the jump to lightspeed, the Empire is right on top of us!”

“You nerfherder! You installed the new MAC OSX on the ship because it was flashier, but it can’t actually do anything let alone calculate a jump to lightspeed!”

Our heroes die in a massive fireball and the movie ends.

Yeah, It’s almost as if Star Wars all happened in the past and in a galaxy that doesn’t match up with our own.
A Long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… If you will.
Oh.

I meant that it hasn’t aged particularly well. The original Halloween still holds up today because the story could still happen in the modern day, but Season of the Witch’s plot would not happen in this day and age.

Also, don’t take my 6.5 rating as meaning I didn’t like it. On the contrary, I thought it was quite good.

If you mean that the plot could have only happened in the time the film was made, why is that a problem when the film happens in the era it was made?
If you mean that this plot wouldn’t get made because of modern sensibilities, I still don’t see how that’s a negative against the movie.

I hated Halloween III when I was younger (8 or 9 maybe), and quite liked the original. I’ve never seen others and I don’t think I’ve seen either of those two since, but looking back I can’t think of why I hated III so much. It was silly and dumb, but not bad.

This. A movie made in the '50s is every bit as dated as a movie made in the '80s (if not more so), but that doesn’t stop me from loving either. Heck, the “datedness” is what adds to the appeal.

Horny Penguin is dumb, no matter how much fun it is to see crazy supervillain Danny Devito.

Drive (2011)

Such a great movie. This was my second time around and I think I enjoyed it more, not being slightly overwhelmed by the violence like I was in my first viewing. So many sequences and elements this film are almost tailor made for me. I love how ultra-stylish many of the shots and scenes are, how well the music compliments the visuals, how cool Gosling is, how relaxed and long a load of shots are, how tightly paced it is, how pure the romance is, how moody the atmosphere is…my only complaints are that the dialog is a tad clunky and that it lacks some emotional impact towards the end.

A sinister viral marketing scheme would update the plot nicely. Replace the tv commercials with a “killer” phone app or youtube video. Just lose the ridiculously huge plastic tags 99% of the kids would cut off the mask anyway.

I keep toying with the idea of a video loop running that flashing pumpkin and the Silver Shamrock ads on my remaining analog tv in the window for Halloween.

Where were you in '77?
