Just saw a pristine 35mm print of Jaws. Absolutely fantastic.

That theater is doing a two-week 70mm series shortly after my birthday, and I’m seriously considering going to at least half the movies. The ones I’m circling are Lawrence of Arabia (again; I just saw it two months ago but I don’t think I could live with myself if I passed up seeing a real print), 2001: A Space Odyssey, Spartacus, and Sleeping Beauty (they’ve got the only existing 70mm print). They’re also doing The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur on 35mm, and I’ll probably try to see one or both of those.

FUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!

I’m out of state for the semester! I am legitimately furious at myself for missing this.

Repo Man (1984) – B++

What an interesting film. It’s just so weird. I liked it.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

By “pristine” do you mean it was vintage but well-preserved, or was it newly-struck (if you know)?
What theater?

Jaws (1975) – A-

It was a fine film, and I really enjoyed it, but nothing too fancy. Just straight forward goodness.

Firstly, Happy Birthday! Take advantage of those screenings, I envy you.

Birthday and 70mm fest aren’t for another month. Jaws was an insanely well-preserved vintage print. This is all happening at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, Massachusetts. The head honcho (I don’t remember his actual title) came out to plug the 70mm series before the movie; according to him it took them literal years to convince Disney to loan them the Sleeping Beauty print. “If you ever have the choice between trying to obtain a rare print from Disney and giving birth to a porcupine that’s also on fire, you should go with the second option,” was how he put it.

I’ll bet the mothers in the crowd loved hearing that.

But if I were a porcupine I’d sure take umbrage!

I fired up Amadeus for the first time in ages tonight. I went with the director’s cut on Netflix rather than my DVD of the theatrical version because I wanted it in high def, and for an hour or so I didn’t notice any major differences, but then I hit this awful added bit where Salieri explicitly blackmails Constanza into sleeping with him that’s just left a terrible taste in my mouth. I’m now thinking I want to purchase the theatrical cut, but the only blu-ray I can find is this director’s cut. Does anyone know if both cuts are included on that disc? I love this film in its original form dearly, and that extra scene was such a rude awakening.

I don’t think Amadeus has ever had it’s theatrical version released in HD. There is a project on here that closely recreates the original version, though.

Spoilers for Full Metal Jacket

Finally (kinda) watched Full Metal Jacket, and I was pretty disappointed. The first act of the movie was great, both Pyle and Hartman were amazing. I was really excited to see how Pyle would fare being on the front lines of an actual war, but that never happened. Perhaps this is only me, but I was led to believe that Pyle was the main character, he was interesting, and relatable, but halfway into the film he blows his damn head off. Then suddenly we’re following Joker, who was at best; bland. This movie can be summed up in one word;

DISJOINTED

I got bored by the time they got to the mass grave and that general guy asked about the peace sign and “born to kill” helmet combo. I’ll probably revisit at a later date and watch all of it, but I doubt my opinion will change. Apocalypse Now is far superior.

If I found Pyle relatebel right until before he blows his head off, I would be worried.

Maybe “relatable” isn’t the right word. I understood where he was coming from and I felt bad for him. Copy-pasted from another website;

The degradation, the constant mistakes and mess-ups…It’s bad enough to hear see and know how much of a fuck up you are despite how hard you try. It’s even worse when your peers and boss validate how much of a fuck up you are and punish you for it in their own degrading, scornful, alienating way. That sort of pain-knowing that everyone hates you and that you are the weak link of the entire group- is enough to drive anyone insane. Especially if you have the emotional fragility of a child.

I (largely) agree. The first half of Full Metal Jacket is one of the best movies of all time. The second is a typical Kubrick picture (ie. something I absolutely don’t care for.)

While we’re on Kubrick, I snagged the Criterion blu-ray of Dr. Strangelove yesterday and watched it tonight with an old friend. Easily my favorite Kubrick flick, and almost certainly in my top ten overall. I still found myself laughing out loud almost non-stop even after however many dozens of viewings.

I watched the original Halloween again, but this time with RedLetterMedia commentary. Made the film even more enjoyable.

One film I definitely won’t be seeing is Birth Of A Nation (2016), because Nate Parker can go to hell for raping a woman and driving her to suicide.

What a shame; it seems like every movie you see now is an implicit endorsement of criminal behavior.

RoboCop (1987) – A

Just wonderful. It’s probably an almost perfect film, for what it is.

RoboCop 2 (1990) – C+

There are some things that I like in it, but generally isn’t very good in my opinion. I guess the story it told just wasn’t the story I wanted to hear. Definitely not in my personal canon 😛.
