Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair - 5/5

Seeing these films back to back in one 4-hour long sitting really shows how amazing they are.

I searched for “horror movies full” on YouTube and skimmed the results until a thumbnail tickled my fancy. I watched the movie. Then I clicked the next recommended video that was a full length movie. This is how I roll. I am living life to the fullest here.

First up, YouTube told me it was called “Unnatural” but the title onscreen was “Maneater”. It was made in 2015 and has the plot where a genetically engineered animal escapes and eats people, until it gets stopped. This one was set in the snow. They somehow managed to get James Remar, Graham Green, Ray Wise and Sherilyn Fenn to star in this. Poor Sherilyn has succumbed to the ravages of age and, owing to the fact that I’ve seen her in nothing but early to mid 90’s stuff before today, she was the scariest part of the entire movie.

I give it 1 Botox injection out of 5.

Next, a steaming pile of fetid putrescence masquerading as a movie - “The Hollow” (2015).

Three Emo teen sisters (or whatever Emos are called nowadays) go to live with their aunt on an island after their parents die. “It’s Halloween, and there’s a storm coming!” a worried local helpfully warns. The dialogue is expositional and stilted and the plot is belly-button fluff. The whole thing is bad and it’s about 40 minutes too long (a lot like this post.)

Despite clear evidence that the threat is supernatural everybody runs around with guns and shoots at it. Bizarrely, some of the locals survive by hiding in a large freezer - because apparently the vengeful spirit of a murdered witch just can’t deal with refrigeration equipment. A dog dives through a car window for no reason! EVERYTHING IS A JUMP SCARE!! The three teen leads are actually very good actresses and deserve better work in their careers than this tripe.

It’s so bad it’s actually kinda fun though so I’ll give it 2 and a half Canadian-tax-breaks out of 5.

What a wild Saturday night that was.

I had a somewhat similar reaction the first time I watched a recent movie with Heather Langenkamp. Being so used to seeing her as a youthful woman in her 20s & 30s, it was kind of unsettling to suddenly see her as a middle-aged woman.

10 Cloverfield Lane - The first 90% of the movie was outstanding, but I’m still trying to process how I felt about the end. I think it was kind of a shame that they went that batshit after how incredibly tight everything that happened in the bunker was, but then I remind myself that this is in fact supposed to be a spiritual successor to Cloverfield.

I don’t get why it had to be a successor to Cloverfield. Apparently it wasn’t at first and was called the Cellar.

Now it can be coupled as part of a “Cloverfield” box set forever and ever after.

I get that and agree with it on some level, but I also really like the idea of Cloverfield as a loose anthology series without continuity but overlapping themes and styles. Do I need to tag spoilers for this thing here? Just in case, SPOILERS:

When she got out of the bunker I was disappointed to find that it actually was just aliens the entire time, but when she went to Houston to join the survivors and it was revealed that this whole thing was essentially a prologue for this huge epic that we’ll probably never see, I was back on board. When it looked like she escaped and then had to fight some CGI aliens for just for the sake of upping the ante I was disappointed, but by tying it into this nonexistent larger story I think they ultimately made it feel more earned.

SPOILERS:

I wish that it would’ve ended with the bunker exploding and her finding out that the air isn’t poisonous.

^Or an open ending where it’s never fully shown that the air is/isn’t contaminated.

SPOILERS:

That was never going to be the ending of the film. The original ending had her escaping and discovering the entire city had been destroyed. So tying it into the Cloververse was just a small extra step.

I actually would love to see a cut of the movie with that ending. I’m assuming it was never filmed though. I think in a way though the theatrical ending was better since it gave here the opportunity to take control of her own life. Something I was never quite sure of was how long she was actually inside of the bomb shelter.

That could’ve worked but I think for this movie I would’ve preferred knowing that she made it out alive for sure.

Back to the Future: Part II - A-

I’ve actually never seen Part III before, but I got the Blu Rays fairly cheap today so I’ll be watching it tomorrow.

How would you explain what’s her name from Silicon Valley showing up looking all fried, then? Or for that matter, Emmett kind-of-sort-of witnessing the disaster? There needed to be something going on outside of John Goodman’s head; otherwise it’s just another maniac with a bunker movie.

Lady was a paid actress. Emmett was too but Howard really did kill him, because method acting gone too far, I guess.

Eh, I can’t see Howard being good enough with people to orchestrate something like that. I also think it’s much more compelling if Howard is crazy and right rather than just crazy.

SPOILERS:
Well technically the air wasn’t poisonous because it was actually the alien gases that killed stuff.

Let me clarify, I still want for her to have driven away and heard the radio message and then go to the city to help. I would’ve preferred that they left it open to whether or not it was a foreign invasion or an alien invasion. Just cut out the whole rest of the final segment with the battle. I thought it was well done the way it was, but just unnecessary.

I watched Army of Darkness again, I just can’t get enough of it. I know it gets flak from hardcore fans of the series but I can’t help but love it, even if it does sometimes get caught up in it’s own stupidity. It’s insanely quotable and very well made.

8/10

Wow, didn’t expect it to be that good. Zach Snyder created a spectacularly odd fable involving superhero characters. It’s no ordinary comic book movie, check it out!

I’d rather read the comic. At least then I could avoid the horrible soundtrack and Snyder’s awful style.
