I really like this graphic novel adaptation. The art style’s utilitarian and the writing’s decompressed, but they both work for this type of story; it’s like the mundanity and the slow pace work together to make the horrific elements of the story even more disturbing.

All-in-all, I recommend this graphic novel. It’s more faithful to the original book than the film adaptation, but without the book’s dryness.

I just read The Killing Joke for the first time. It was the fully colored special edition thing from around 2008. I liked it.

THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

Moon Knight (Vol. 5) #1-6

Bizarre, haunting, fascinating. I’m glad I picked up this trade a while back and got familiar with the character, and I’d very much like to read some of the older Moon Knight comics someday.

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear #1

Pretty solid. The Netflix series origin was basically a very faithful but condensed version of this. Bonus points for being inked by Al Williamson. I look forward to reading the rest.

So, as I’ve said a few times before, I’ve been going through the Iron Man reading list on the Complete Marvel Reading Order website because I’ve only relatively recently gotten into superheroes and comics thanks to the MCU, and I wanted to learn more about the origins of my favorite character.

I’ve been enjoying the list so far, and I’ve been meaning to get into reviews for the issues as I read them but I’m lazy. I won’t go into back reviews of the 60s, suffice to say it has been really enjoyable to see the origins of so many key Marvel characters and the evolution of the Avengers and the art and the costumes.

Anyway. My latest issue was:

The Avengers Vol. 1 80

Iron Man is just a bit part in here, but we get a neat look at Red Wolf, who is a Native American hero who allies himself with the Avengers on a quest for, well, vengeance.

It’s always been interesting to see how progressive these comics have been so far. I mean, sure they’re tied to their time in terms of language and the overarching thoughts of the day, and they definitely make me laugh with their quaint views on gender and some aspects of race, but Tony Stark made Eddie March (a black man) Iron Man for awhile. T’Challa and Wanda Maximov are respected members of the Avengers. Bill Foster was just as capable a scientist as Hank Pym. Carol Danvers holds a high office. Red Wolf so far has been given better than the “noble savage” treatment. It’s just very interesting to see.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

Checked this out from the library today:

This’ll be the first time I’ve read a Hellboy story. I’m gonna get started on it tonight.

Forgot to follow-up this post.

So yeah, anyway, this was an awesome, awesome read. I don’t know if I can say I like Mignola’s art style, but I quite admire the Kirby influence within it and it does suit itself well for this type of action-packed, over-the-top story. And that ending – man, that ending only left me wanting more, which is what every good ending should do.

Suffice it to say, I’m going to read more Hellboy. I’ve already checked the next two volumes out of the library and will get started on them right away.

I enjoyed quite a bit. Interesting story. Makes me want to check out more of the Aliens Expanded Universe.

Not enough people read the EU.

It’s crazy, nuts, insane, bonzo, no longer in possession of one’s faculties, three fries short of a Happy Meal, WACKO! but I’d still read this and a hundred stories of its ilk before ever picking up any of the mainstream Batman comics published in the last several years.

I’ve read a lot of comics lately and haven’t felt like typing any of this out until now, so bear with me.

Nightwing vol. 1 TPB

I liked the writing, but there was something about the art that seemed off, no matter which artist drew the issue I was on there was something I didn’t like that I couldn’t put my finger on.

I reread some of my Silver Age Justice League trade the other day.

I haven’t got much to say about it. I was in the mood for some goofy and ridiculous fun, it delivered.

I’ve been sorta keeping up with a few current books, despite my initial kneejerk reactions to the newest multiverse event stuff. Maybe I’m just a lame corporate shill, idk.

I’m only going to insert one cover from each.

Superman

Costume sucks, everything else is great. I like the new Superboy.

Nightwing

Skipped the first 8 issues because I don’t care about any of the Court of Owls stuff, but he’s in Blüdhaven again now and it’s good. Well, except for an appearance from Red Hood (Jason Todd) in issue 15, but that’s just because I hate him.

Super Sons

Robin takes himself way too seriously, tries to work seperate from Batman and Superboy’s helplessly along for the ride.

Titans

Following this one in trade. I like that the original Wally’s back and I liked the story behind this one of him trying to reconnect with Linda who doesn’t remember him and a team that only recently remembered him. I’m not a big fan of the art, nor do I like Roy Harper’s stupid baseball hat and tattoos. I also don’t understand why Starfire and Beast Boy aren’t on this team, but whatever.

Read all nine volumes of the Bone series by Jeff Smith over the past couple days.

There is something to be said for reading these comics as they were first published – in individual issues, released months apart, over a period of years. When you read these comics in trade paperbacks, breezing through them, something of the magic is lost.

Regardless, I enjoyed revisiting this series, finally reading the entire thing (and in order, too).

Ghostbusters 101: 01

Erik Burnham has the amazing ability to write every character’s dialog exactly how you’d imagine the character would speak, no matter which universe the Ghostbuster is from. The movie characters have always been spot on, the cartoon versions were amazing, and even the short glimpse we get of the ATC Ghostbusters in this issue are perfectly in character.

Loved the artwork, but didn’t care much for the story. I didn’t hate the writing, but I’ve never been fond of “witches as Satanists” stories, so I couldn’t really enjoy it.

Waiting on installments for two graphic novels I’m following so I decided to go on a tangent and start something I skipped a few years ago.

Really digging it so far. Much more of a secret agent/espionage story than a super hero crime fighter. It’s his post-Nightwing story. DC Just announced they’re going to transition this into his reemergence as Nightwing in a few months. I will have caught up by then.

Anyway, the story is a nice change of pace. Great work by Seeley and Janin.

Hm. This book didn’t appeal to me at all when it started and I never picked it up, but I like Seeley’s current Nightwing, so maybe I’ll go back and read this at some point.

Lando #1-5

Up to now I’ve been incredibly disappointed with Marvel’s modern take on Star Wars. They’ve been a huge disappointment that has had me yearning for the Dark Horse days.

After a very long break I decided it was time to try again. Lando is my first dip back in and it’s a promising one.

They did a very fine job of capturing the essence of Lando and I very much enjoyed this new take on Lobot. I like to imagine he has a Northern English accent. There’s a decent plot here but nothing too exciting.

It still has some annoying bits that don’t really fit in this universe but they’re kept to a minimum. Hopefully the other mini-series can at least maintain this level of quality. Once I’ve burned through them I’ll be left with nothing but the Main line and Darth Vader. Blech.

I fear the Lando miniseries may end up being the only quality product Marvel will produce since getting the license back from Dark Horse. I haven’t read a single other story from them them that hasn’t been mediocre or worse.

I’m a fan of issue #7 of the main line. Other than that, I haven’t read much. Didn’t even finish Lando because comic shops are soooo far away from me and I didn’t get all the issues, but I got enough to not want to buy the trade. I’ll grab the rest online eventually because those first two issues are great.
