Hey guys, been working on the Ac~ power filtering system. Its coming along nicely, its still some work left but im making progress. I got a 120kg 20kva transformator in my workshop but i figured it would take too much room at home so i settled for a nice little 6kg lump for line isolation to the gear :) Over 300 bucks just on this part alone so im not going to settle for any hum, it is a little overkill but thats the way i want it tbh. The hardest part so far was upgrading the upper disc clamp mechanism to higher spec. Was just plastic with metal insert, now its using a micrometer aligned metal clamp plate from an old Pioneer Cld-1750. I just got my silver solder and other gear so ive been hard at work.

I'm stealing this thread a little.

I'm really interested in how "good"/bad a LD movie looks when it's projected. Is it even watchable in 100" 16/9 on a screen?

Screenshots would be much appreciated.

(dark jedis 16:9 gout is another deal, I bet they could look pretty decent with a good blu-ray player doing the up-scaling)

Im thinking of releasing a blue ray format release also, since whats the point in IVTC the whole thing then cramming it back into interlaced for a dvd. Progressive > interlaced. Technically by the way those owning the re release gout dvd can watch mine with no trouble since the master tape is basically the same. The 97 on the other hand is another story and i wont go into detail on that just now. On a sidenote i bought a new digital cam today to take some pictures of the stuff i have done so far. Mod wise the Runco (1kg+ heavier) Ac filtering+ isolation transformer, power input card on the c2ex and pinnacle miro dc30+ is finished. The c2ex motherboard has been extensively modded with new capacitors and hand made copper cables for a cleaner signal etc. Soon im getting the last capacitors. Black gate wich is the best electrolyte there is, bad news is that they will need around 200 hours to burn-in.

Depending on your player and TV/display, a progressive DVD will play back full progressive frames.

Well, the IVTC is also done because it's easier to edit/filter the frames. And you don't have to turn it into something interlaced to put in on dvd.

Sixth picture down from the top, the cap @ C163 looks like it has dry solder joints...just a heads up.

vbangle: Yea i know it looks sort of deformed, i went back in to get some flux impurities and the solder followed the iron up a bit. The silver sometimes does not mix all the way with the rest but its 100% connected the shiny solder makes it look suspect too.

No biggie, I just thought I'd say something...this project has such great potential, I'd feel like an idiot if I saw something in your pics that needed attention and didn't say anything...

I used to assemble prototypes for the EE boys in less time than the board house could...but that was when my eyes where MUCH better...

(Pedant: it's actually "Blu-ray")

If done correctly, the MPEG2 video on a DVD is actually encoded as progressive. The framerate is made up from 23.976fps to 29.97fps by pulldown flags in the video stream. A progressive scan DVD player will reconstruct the original film frames on playback.

However, the disadvantage with the DVD-Video format is the MPEG2 encoding itself. Encoders tend to struggle with losts of random noise which can lead to compression artefacts. It would actually be a good idea to use a more modern AVC/h.264 encoder such as x264 which can better deal with the noise present in the source.  Standard definition video would of course not need to fill a full BD-25 disc, but a DVD-9 sized AVCHD disc or MKV file would be a excellent choice.

Technically by the way those owning the re release gout dvd can watch mine with no trouble since the master tape is basically the same.

True, but the master tape - and the laserdisc - has more vertical detail, as the GOUT DVD has had some filtering in the vertical direction carried out.

I'm suitably impressed. This must have cost you a fortune, forget about the time taken to do the mod etc!

A couple of questions though:

What was the reason for the 3 powersupplies?

You mentioned painting the plastic pickup surround on my player; any idea what type of paint to use? (I don't want to melt it).

Any chance you can please list or give some links to the suppliers for your parts used eg R-core transformers, exotic capacitors etc?

Can't wait to see the end result of all this hard work.

If television is chewing gum for the mind, then the prequels are the worlds first visual laxative.

Hobby paint meant for toy soldiers etc. (plastics safe), make sure its flat black or flat dark grey. Petrolium based spray paint is probably what you mean by melting plastic. On the Powersupply side there is 1 P.S for the clock crystal, 1 for the mainboard and 1 supply for the soundboard and servo section. Part of the reason is that crystal oscillators can create feedback noise on the dc voltage side wich i dont want in the circuit. Plus i dont want fine noise from the standard power supplies going into the crystal. The mainboard with green caps (Nichicon Muse ES) is work in progress by the way, it will get new caps all over the signal path from pickup to tbc section.

Since im in europe i have ordered most of my stuff from www.banzaieffects.com, impressed with the service so far.

For some of the special caps i went to www.ebay.com and http://www.partsconnexion.com/ for black gate caps.

I'll just echo what others have said: this is all most impressive. Though not a hardcore laserdisc aficionado by any means, I've nonetheless been following your progress with much enthusiasm. Definitely looking forward to the results you squeeze out of this hotrod. :)

Aleksbmw, I almost never have any idea what you're talking about, but it has all made me very excited to see what your laserdisc can produce. Keep up the good work!

AVC/h.264 would be a great idea, especially for anyone looking for source material for those quixotic "de-se'd" Star Wars projects.  Can't wait to see what comes of this.  Good luck and don't give up.  :)

I think an h.264 encoded mkv file is an excelent idea. But I'd also like to see it released as a DVD9, so I can throw it into any DVD player and easily watch it on the TV.

Any screens of captured video yet or are you still building?

If the mkv features aren't used might be wiser to use mp4 instead...better compatibility. (still get your h.264/aac support, vfr, multi-audio)
