I think we can put the “contract” theory to bed, once and for all. John Landis said only a couple years ago that George himself told him that “Disney is going to put them out, as they were.” That’s quite an odd thing to make up / joke about, so I think it’s safe to take his word for it.
Less credible is that story from some guy on HTF (or whichever message board it was) about how Disney was going to restore the OOT in time for TFA, and then didn’t because they realized they needed more time to really get it right.
But the 2020 makes perfect sense from a business standpoint. It doesn’t make sense in terms of timing (the ST will be over by then and Ep9 will already be on blu-ray and 4k), but on the other hand that might give them a good release window to hype up and advertise the restoration.
Disney can put out a “Complete Skywalker Family Saga” set in 2020. I just hope they also do a OOT set for those who bought the ST on release and hate the Prequels.
It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? Sooner or later, every thread becomes a 4K Restoration thread. That’s one of the laws of thermodynamics.
It’s also one of the ways scientists suggest the universe might end, which seems plausible.

Too reasonable…
One thing that I do hope is, that if an OOT release doesn’t happen in 2020, we will no longer get these unfounded predictions of when it’s certainly going to happen. It’s one thing to speculate based on reliable rumours, but at this rate it’s beginning to become one of those crackpot theories, like those people that predict the end of the world, and keep moving the goalposts when it doesn’t happen (again).
