It's Official: George Lucas hates his fans :P — Page 3

Except that the Mona Lisa was not your idea, and had nothing to do with you.

There were a LOT of people that helped to make Star Wars great, but that doesn't change that it was George Lucas' "child". Sure, grandma and grandpa and aunts and uncles and friends helped as it grew up and matured, but that child will always remain George's.

I feel like a lot of Star Wars fans feel overly-entitled...

Some of it goes so far as to make me think of Occupy Wall Street protesters:

Reporter: "What do you want?"

Protester: "Money"

Reporter: "So what are corporations and government supposed to do.

Protester: "Give me some!"

Reporter: "Why?"

Protester: "Because I want it!"

Reporter: "But isn't it their choice what to do with the money they've earned?"

Protester: "But I've paid taxes. That must directly correlate to why they are rich. So they owe it to me."

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Seems like a bit of slight oversimplification of Occupy Wall Street, but I do admit that their are issues on both sides of Lucas and Star Wars fans.

On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie,” Lucas says, referring to fans who, like the dreaded studios, have done their own forcible re-edits. “I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.

Lucas pretends not to understand what the issue is. nightstalkerpoet, you don't seem to appreciate the issue either. It's the same old debate but the facts are:

1. George Lucas altered a historic and beloved movie.

2. George Lucas refused to release the original version of it (which exacerbated the reaction to Fact 1).

3. After years of outcry, George Lucas released an original version in slapdash condition (which continued to build a narrative that Lucas didn't respect his fans that much).

4. George Lucas claimed he had destroyed the ability to release the original movies in better condition because of the work done on them for the SE.

And you want us to thank him?

The problem is not that some people made mean comments. Lots of fans have not made rude, hyperbolic comments. Plenty of fans were probably disillusioned and walked away. You're focusing on a relative minority of people and pretending they created Lucas's attitude toward preserving and releasing the original movies - rather than a reaction to his attitude, which they obviously are.

nightstalkerpoet, asking meekly does not change a person's mind who believes, as you assert, that the original movies were merely first drafts. Does Lucas not already know the original versions are part of cinematic history that should be preserved? Of course he does. Does Lucas not already know that the original versions are beloved by many? Of course he does. Every statement he has made on the matter pretends the opposite.

It's too bad that Mr. Lucas doesn't read the many many civil comments posted on this site. That he doesn't hear the basic frustration of his fans. You posted what you assert to be a "negative tone" in the OT petition:

culminated with the release of the 2006 limited edition DVDs, which contained substandard transfers from 1993

That is a statement of fact. The transfers were technically substandard. It's not a judgment about Lucas's character.

as the steward of one of the most recognizable and beloved film series of all time, you have a responsibility

That is an assertive statement and there is nothing negative about it. The hope, of course, is that Lucas agrees that as steward he has a responsibility (to his fans, society, history, what have you). If his feeling is simply, 'shut up, it's my movie, I don't care about cinematic history or you twits...' well it didn't matter how meekly it was worded, did it? You act like Lucas will burst into a rage unless we show complete subordinance. There is nothing wrong with being assertive.

The deliberate destruction of the original elements demonstrates such disrespect for film history that many of us find it hard to believe,

Lucas claims that the original elements were destroyed in making his digital alterations. Fans honestly feel this shows disrespect to cinematic history. It's not an endearing thing to say and of your three examples, this does fall on the negative side.  Is this the sort of comment that perturbs Lucas and prevents him from wanting to satisfy those who love the work he created?

Are you claiming that Lucas is so proud and ill-tempered, that when fans present him with an assertive petition asking to buy his original creations, he ignores it and lashes out? I don't appreciate that implication. George Lucas did create Star Wars, after all.

The blue elephant in the room.

Georgie can say and do what he wants because 99% of SW fans will always be there, frothing at the mouth for any table scraps he throws down to them.

Now the UOT crowd is the mean group of people who hurt Georgie's feelings so badly that he decided to quit the movie business. Of course, George isn't quitting anything nor has he been particularly active in Hollywood since ROTS, other than with Indy 4. It's an erroneous, misleading statement but it succeeds in painting the UOT people and other non-apologists as haters who turned on their beloved creator and ruined SW for everybody.

I seriously don't comprehend why anybody who dislikes Lucas' antics continues to support him in some way, be it watching Clone Wars, playing SW video/PC games, buying books, buying the blu-rays, etc. Now Lucas has called out anyone who dares question him and blamed them for his selfish behavior. How many times can he tell his fans, "FU," before they stop giving him money? Georgie is curious to know because everybody always comes back. "Oh, I don't like the new changes, but I guess it's Star Wars on blu-ray."

I probably sound harsh and arrogant but people need to get over the need to have SW continuously in their lives. I love the originals and that will never change, but I don't need to watch them all the time nor do I need to fill some void for new SW material with anything that exists out there today. That's not to say I don't think the fan restorations (Adywan, Harmy, etc.) are amazing efforts. I'm talking more about newly created SW crap.

SW as a phenomenon is extremely played out. Dogs barking Imperial March in commercials? Don't care. 3D rerelease? Don't care.

Move along.

I think a few things are going to help play out whether or not we'll ever see the GOUT released the way fans want it.

1) When the Indiana Jones movies are released on Blu with no changes and it sells like hotcakes

2) When E.T. is released on Blu in the original version like Spielberg hints (hell, I'll take it the way the DVD was released)

3) When more of Lucas' contemporaries release their movies on Blu with either multiple versions or just the original only (see Spielberg and his take on how his movies are put out on Blu from here on out)

4) When the 3D Saga doesn't do as well as they hoped (didn't I read an article somewhere that TPM will be the only 3D release because demand isn't there?)

And as a final note, I did not take away from the article that Lucas is okay with fan edits as long as his name isn't on it.  I think his "my name on it" statement and the comment about fan edits were convoluted into something else that he didn't imply.

I just love how the tone of the article I read this interview in seems to really be agreeing with this pity party.  It was full of, "See, there's no more Star Wars, and it's your fault!  If only you'd kissed his ass at every opportunity, he'd give us more movies."  Really?  This is how upside down Star Wars fandom is?  I was under the impression that the creator had to appeal to the consumer, not the other way around.  All it sounds like to me is the next in a long line of excuses, and this just sounds more "powerful" (read:  whiny) than just, "Oh, the media made up the idea of sequels."  I guess he realizes that too many people have read zombie's book and know that line is full of crap, so now there ARE possible Star Wars sequels, but he's just gonna take his ball and go home because we're all soooooo mean.

It's amazing that there's still some idiots after 15 years of film enthusiasts and old Star Wars fans trying to explain the situation calmly, burp "he released the original films on DVD and you're still complaining". No, he included the 1993 videorelease as a bonus feature, something every Star Wars fan had already bought when it was released 13 years earlier, even if I was only seven years old, I would understand the issue, do these people think that some kind of magic was involved for the '97 re-issue. I wonder if they even know what restore means.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

RIGHT PICTURE!

George might be off his trolley but he is at least cutting his own face off.

Warner Bros are still sitting on the full cut of Ken Russell's masterpiece The Devils (1971) and that may never ever see the light of day.

The nearest we will be able to get for the time being is the soon to be released BFI DVD release of the UK theatrical version.

Now that is a major work by a recently deceased genius being suppressed by a studio.

Even George would see that as criminal.

I just think it's a testament to his delusion that he would see that as criminal but what he's doing as just peachy,

I don't think it's possible to even comprehend the level of delusion that George Lucas has. On the one hand he still promotes preserving films in their original forms for the benefit of future generations, and on the other hand he claims that the OT as released in cinemas in '77, '80 and '83 were just rough cuts that should never have seen the light of day, so therefore they shouldn't exist at all. It truly makes me wonder if he realises the hypocrisy of what he says and does (and if so, then logically we can assume he doesn't care), or if his perception of things is so warped that he sees film preservation and Star Wars as two totally separate issues.
