Info Wanted: Two Questions

Hi, I have two questions

1. Were there any changes in the 1995 VHS releases? (Funny how the commercials say “Own the Star Wars Trilogy. One Last Time.” Who knew that would be true). I do know that they added “A New Hope” to the IV. Besides that, maybe its a better source than the laserdisc versions. Has anyone converted it to DVD?

2. Where can I download the fan edits?

There was a LD that corresponded to the 1995 VHS.  I'm sure the Faces Laser would kill the Faces VHS with death.

The 1993 and 1995 laserdiscs used the same masters that the 1995 VHS tapes did, and as such were better quality than the VHS tapes were, being laserdiscs and all.

That's right, I forgot about the GOUT discs. Well, it was last time the Original trilogy was released normally instead of being "bonus material". "How in the world could vhs ever be better than laserdisc?" I don't know, I never owned a laserdisc. I was just asking.

sorry about that,

i just figured over the last several years, a lot of people had been watching the laserdisc rips.

basically laserdiscs, are like really big cd's (think vinyl albums)......that hold analog video,

although they do deteriorate, and have issues like dot crawl, noise, and other artifacts (especially if they've been mastered from subpar sources

like videotape)...................in general they retain their quality as long as you preserve them well..

i have very old laserdiscs from the late 80's that still look sharp.........

by the way, if you go to fanedits, make sure you get a rapidshare account, or it will take you a long time to download

the files,.................also if you're adventurous and knowledgable about newsgroups, you might want to check those

out also...like alt.bin.starwars..................etc...

He means this, which was on the packaging of the '95 laserdiscs.

Which is why so many people were surprised to see it later on DVD.

I think that was on the shrink wrap on the outside, so it wouldn't be on the physical sleeve itself.

I don't remember that sticker on my VHS set either, but I definitely remember all the advertising - including television commercials - hyping it as "one last time" to get the original Star Wars etc.

The faces set was released right before the '97 SE, and it was originally intented to be the final release of the orignal version of the trilogy.  All the publicity for the set had the "one last time" line tacked on it.   The GOUT was never dreamed of until recently.

doesn't disney pull the exact same stunts but worse..

i remember them saying the films were going to keep going back into the vault,

and here we are decades later, with 10 different formats, versions, and special

editions of the dvd's also?

i just try to stick to the laserdisc versions, and as a necessary evil, maybe

the special edition dvd's....but thats about it...

much worse in my opinion..

In answer to the original posters question:

From a certain point of view (god, I can never use that expression and be treated seriously) the 1995 THX set might be percieved as altered--its color timing. Even though every release looked a bit different because each release is individually color-timed, the 1995 release seemd to point to deliberate artistic changes which would later be confirmed in the SE. For instance, the scene where R2 gets zapped in the canyon was originally fairly brightly exposed, but on the THX it is dim, much darker than any telecine prior, as if it is much later in the day--on the SE, it would be digitally re-timed to be sunset. Another example is Hoth--though it may be argued that this was not the first release to introduce blue emphasis on Hoth, the intensity here far outwieghs everything that came before it; as originally photographed Hoth is fairly neutral looking, but here the scenes all have a heavy blue shift to them. In the SE this would be emphasized more and in the 2004 SE pushed to the extreme.

Yeah, Disney pretty much ran this scam into the ground. Back in the glory days of VHS, they proclaimed Snow White and Fantasia would only ever be released on video once. Prior to that, Snow White was in the "when hell freezes over" video relase schedule. ;)

This is probably why nobody really took the "Last chance to own the original version of Star Wars" ads seriously.

Where were you in '77?

I took it seriously- especially after the SEs came out in '97!

Correct. When I bought this LD on Half.com, it still had the original shrinkwrap, so I kept it like that and bought another one for playback purposes.

I don't think the VHS set had it (either the THX or Faces set), but yes, there were many TV ads spouting that line at the time.

Well, they talk about movies going "back in the vault" for an unknown amount of time. The Platinum DVDs were supposed to be one release each year (right after my daughter's birthday, which is good timing), but I think they've been adding more Platinums (as well as swelling the ranks of the Golds and Silvers), especially since Eisner left.

Of course, now there's Blu-Ray, so expect to see more films coming out. I have it on good authority that Bug's Life is being redone for HD.

For instance, the scene where R2 gets zapped in the canyon was originally fairly brightly exposed, but on the THX it is dim, much darker than any telecine prior, as if it is much later in the day

It is definitely different from the same Japanese release, but I prefer it overall to the Def. Col. series.
