DVD's & Premiere (Please help the noob)

Hey gang. Sorry if this has been covered a million times, but I've searched this forum and videohelp.com, and I'm still kinda stuck.

I want to make fan edits of a TV series I have on DVD. I understand the basics of ripping DVD's to Mpeg & Divx files (using DVD Decrypter, Auto Gordian Knot, etc...). I also am familiar with editing DV video in Premiere, compressing DV to MPG2 and authoring my own DVD's.

I want to take the video from the DVD's, edit them in Premiere, and ensure that I'm able to make my fan edits into DVD's and Divx rips with a minimum of generation loss/re compression. I want to use Premiere because I know how to use it pretty well, and I don't want to waste time learning another editing application.

I don't need a lot of hand holding--like I said, I'm pretty familiar with video on PC's. But can someone tell me some basic steps (video formats and programs I'll need) on what's the best way to go from DVD to Premiere and back to DVD & Divx.

If you want to edit DVD footage, it's really the best idea to not edit with Premiere because you'll have to compress to some other format to edit with, and then re-compress back to MPEG2. You'd be best off picking up Womble's MPEG Editor, which is really not hard to learn if you're good at Premiere (I'm speaking from experience here).

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Um, I'm not sure what the AVIsynth way is.

Okay, well from the best I know, avisynth helps to make a fake avi file that allows Premiere or any other avi reading program to read video off a ripped vob file, which doesn't lose you quality. And just use premiere's dvd burning function so you don't have to export and lose any more quality (unless you want a dvd menu and are going to use a dvd authoring program).

So you download --like--here's a guide, but don't download anything from the guide, because it's all outdated, just make sure the get the latest from all those it tells you to download, and once you get it working and figure it all out you can start using filters and all that.

Cool. Thanks guys.

I think I've stumbled upon a good way of doing it. Here's my current plan:

Rip the DVD video to either a single .mpg file or to separate m2v and audio files. Import the video into premiere using the mainconcept MPEG plugin which allows me to edit in premiere with the raw mp2 files from the DVD. I was going to use the Womble program, as
ReverendBeastly suggested, but it looks like the mainconcept plugin will allow me to do he same thing in Premiere. I'm going to be attempting some advanced things, like adding my own CG, and already knowing premiere will make my life easier.

Here's another question for you. When I'm done I want to make both DVD and Divx/xvid versions. What's the best way of going from Premiere to divx? I can export mp2 straight from the timeline for the DVD. I know I can then just re-rip the fanedited DVD to divx, but is there a way to save a generation, and go straight from premiere to divx? I don't really want to export from premiere as DV AVI and then encode that file. The DV AVI will be huuuge, and I'll probably screw up some field/aspect ratio/frame rate setting.

I believe that if you have Adobe Media Encoder with Premiere you can encode to 3rd party codecs. I make WMVs of my Premiere projects straight out of the program all the time.
