Info Wanted: Special Edition Screenshot Request

 (Edited)

Does anyone out there have the French TB or German GKar versions (or maybe even HD recordings themselves) of the Special Editions? I’m looking for two specific screenshots from the Empire Strikes Back.

These are the two images I’m looking for, which are screen captures from the full-screen versions of the 2004 DVDs:

Unfortunately the colors are over-saturated, and if you open the larger versions you can see the letters are really blurry. I’m hoping the Special Editions are a little clearer.

If you’re curious, I’m working on the font for these screens. And no, it’s not aurebesh.

Thanks!

I can post a PAL screenshot later - PAL has higher resolution (edit: except in this case because you have the fullscreen DVDs which aren't available in PAL, as far as I know) and doesn't seem to suffer with the blocky reds. A grab from a digital broadcast might still have the same problem.

I'm still curious... why are you working on the font?

DE,

If it's not too much trouble for you, I'd like to see the PAL screenshots. They might be better.

I'm working on the font because, well, I'm a Star Wars font junkie. I've made 5 fonts so far; I've currently got 3 in the works, and I'm always looking for more to do. It has nothing really to do with any OOT preservation.

It's not much better in PAL:

This is one of the things on my list for ESB - to stabilise the writing so that it's locked to the surrounding panel. It ranks right up there with replacing Boba Fett's lines to me!

I'm afraid that's pretty much the same as my screenshots. Thanks though. I can see how the stabilization of the writing would bug you (don't forget to recycle the second screen in ROJ, just like George did). If it helps, I'll let you know if/when I finish my font.

Hopefully someone else here has something that can help.

Less saturated on the laserdisc, but obviously not as clear (also a bit of dot crawl):

Moth3r,

Thanks. Those might help a little to define some of the edges of the letters. I take it these are from the widescreen laserdiscs. How should I resize to get true aspect ratio?

I wonder if the fullscreen laserdiscs would be any better. It may be a moot point though, since I get the impression they're not sought after very much.

Yeah, sorry I didn't make that clear. The image I posted should be stretched horizontally by a ratio of 1.422.

As requested, here are screenshots of the TB Release and the GKar versions.

The TB Release

TB Clip 1

TB Clip 2

The GKar version

GKar Clip 1

GKar Clip 2

I do not think that you will gain too much from these.

I checked out the Five Star DVD9 and DVD5 as well as the LOOK SE. They were all even worse!!!!!!!!

I hope that something better comes along.

Thanks, Russ. Unfortunately, these are about as good as the widescreen DVD. Too bad there's not a fullscreen version of these.

I don't suppose anyone knows the people who made the GKar version or TB Release? Screenshots of the original HD frames would be really sweet. That would settle this once and for all.

Once again, thanks to everyone who's humored my obscure requests in this thread.

I thought they were just digital broadcasts in standard def, not HD?

That is correct, to the best of my knowledge -- and I'm pretty sure my knowledge is as complete as anyone's. There have been no HD broadcasts of the OT, anywhere, anytime. The best is PAL DVB (576P), with a Fox 480P airing of Empire and Jedi a close second. So what you're getting on TB or GKar is state of the art, with probably no (or minimal) re-encoding artifacts.

You'd have to go to film to get a better look unfortunately, if you know anyone with ESB on film, get them to drop me a line and I'll scan the fames for you

Oh, well. Another dead end. Thanks for the info. If I ever come across an original reel from ESB, I guess I can let you guys know.
